How Revelation Got Into The Bible Canon. by Maynmann: 10:52am On Oct 14, 2022
There’s no other book in the Bible quite like Revelation, but there are plenty of books like Revelation that didn’t make it into the Bible Canon.

The inclusion of Revelation into Canon came at the insistence of Bishop Athanasius in the fourth century, 360 years after the death of jesus.
Revelation almost didn’t make the cut. Many of the presbyters in attendance at the Council of Nicaea didn’t want it in the Bible. For reasons we can only speculate on the decision to include it was made at the last minute—truly a cliffhanger.
“In the early second century, a majority of bishops in Asia Minor voted to condemn the text as blasphemous. It was only in the three-sixties that the church council, under the control of the fiery Bishop Athanasius, inserted Revelation as the climax of the entire New Testament” says Pagels.
Athanasius was so fiery that during his 46 years as bishop he was deposed and exiled five times.
He was primarily responsible for shaping the New Testament while excluding books he labeled as hearsay.

In his Ecclesiastical History (VII, xxv), Eusebius quotes Bishop Dionysius the Great of Alexandria (d. 264-265):
Some indeed of those before our time rejected and altogether impugned the book, examining it chapter by chapter and declaring it to be unintelligible and illogical, and its title fake. For they say that it is not John's, no, nor yet an apocalypse, since it is veiled by its heavy, thick curtain of unintelligibility; and that the author of this book was not only not one of the apostles, nor even one of the saints or those belonging to the Church, but Cerinthus, the same who created the sect called ‘Cerinthian’ after him, since he desired to affix to his own forgery a name worthy of credit. . . . But for my part I should not dare to reject the book, since many brethren hold that the interpretation of each several passages in some way hidden and more wonderful

Also, it is important to clarify that Revelation was an anti-Roman tract, a piece of war propaganda. It was not about the end of the world but the fall of the Roman Empire.
Similar to Winston Churchill's radio broadcasts during the darkest days of World War II.

Most people think 666 stands for an anti-Christ-like figure that will deceive humanity and trigger a final battle between good and evil. Some people even think he’s already here.

However, writer(s) of Revelation didn’t really intend 666 as the devil’s digits. He was describing another incarnation of evil: The Roman emperor, Nero.

Emperor Nero was particularly despised by the earliest followers of Jesus, including the writer(s) of Revelation. Nero was said to have burned followers of Jesus alive to illuminate his garden.

But the author/authors of Revelation couldn’t safely name Nero, so he used the Jewish numerology system to spell out Nero’s imperial name.
The writer(s) of Revelation was actually describing the way his own world ended.

This is why it is written in code. The Whor.e of Babylon is Rome. The beast with seven heads are the seven hills where Rome and her provinces were situated. The reason this was all written in code was because to write critically of Rome and her emperors was to court death, and ministers wandering her provinces were keen to keep their direct criticisms to themselves.
