Goodmarlian: If you think food prices are high, then wait for next year when the effects of this current flood disaster begins to manifest. Worse still, if by hook or crook any of the old corrupt rogues in the person of Atiku or Tinubu takes over government, then you would experience famine of biblical proportions. We have been warning Nigerians of the threat those old rogues portend for millions of Nigerians but some don't seem to understand. A time is coming when Nigerians would have to spend 90% of total income on food yet they would be starving. You can study the crises going on in Lebanon then multiply it by 10 to understand what our situation could be like if care is not taken. 6 Likes 1 Share |

The heart of every nation is the economy. When anything is wrong with the economy it always has drastic domino effects. Nigeria as a nation is in the hands of weak, clueless, incompetent, complacent, greedy political leaders. All hands on deck are square pegs on round holes. My apology to pegs and holes. Monetary policy? Zero. Agricultural policy? Zero. Science and technology? Zero. Credits and loans? Zero. Small and large-scale businesses? Zero. Tax policy? Zero. Education policy? Zero. There will be unfair prices of food when local manufacturing and production are not encouraged and when bilateral trades are not protected against exploitation. But trust Nigerians and Nigerian political leaders, they always sacrifice the trees for a seed. Greed and corruption have eaten into their psyche, even the future seems like a tattered rag. Before food can be gotten in a staple and raw form, there need to be land, farmer, chemicals, seeds, credits, facilities, and maximum security. If these products are not gotten right, there will be a problem in the availability and price of food. There's no need to go further, there can only be a change when there are competent leaders, and if the masses choose and allow their political leaders to roam about freely in their ineptitudes, they will always be doomed. The masses can do it on a micro/individual scale, that's, to manage their poverty or engage in crimes and vices. Those that can learn or leverage with skill are also on track. What Nigeria need is not a president. What she needs is an Economist who understands the causes of poverty and wealth of nations and how a country can prosper. Until then, Africa/Nigeria is forever doomed. Let's just wait patiently for our death or cruise to our respective graveyards. We are doomed! Cc. Hedgefunds. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Omo it’s shocking that nobody is talking about this, every one just adjusts eventually But d poor class are the ones suffering it, even of gas reach 2k for 1kg people will still buy, there should be a serious protest like the one done in a country I can’t recall but they protested about increasing prices It’s becoming too bad honestly 1 Like |

Government alone cannot solve the food problem, though they have a role to pay. And to be fair, this government, through the CBN has put so much money into agriculture, with some good results e.g rice. But the reality is, many farmers have failed to pay back loans. So, the citizens are also part of the problem. And then, there's the elephant in the room which no one wants to talk about - the population is growing too fast. We simply don't grow enough food to feed ourselves, so we have to import more food at great cost, using money we don't really have. I agree with you that the problem is likely to get worse. Unless you think the government should start settling up farms - which would almost certainly fail, I don't think there are easy solutions in the short term. Also, most countries in the world are experiencing high food prices presently, so Nigeria is not alone in this. It is unfortunate that many are going hungry. We need to start addressing root causes - unsustainable population growth, poor, inefficient farm practices etc 3 Likes |

There is enough food and other commodities in Nigeria, the problem is the government have refused to do their duties, those in government don't have the welfare of common man in their heart, let me tell you,the prices of goods are arbitrarily and greedily increased by traders everyday. They increases the price of food and others because nobody is checking them, there is what we called market control board ,price control board and consumer protection agencies,.these agencies insist that Prices of items and quality are not compromised or arbitrarily increased by greedy traders, they will call market union to order if price of goods are up and caution them not to do that and go back to the real Price, if they refuse to go back or sell on the normal price they will sanction or close down the market until they go back to normal price and within that period the market is closed, they will instruct buyers to go government cooperative markets to buy goods, which will force the market to go back to normal , but because the government or governors never cared about the masses ,they never cared to buy food items etc into government cooperative markets, they never buy off excess off from the farmers to store in their silos and into various state ware houses as the government used to do in the 60s and 80s in other to checkmate the unnecessary increment of items and market forces by greedy market union and monopolist which is the main problem in Nigeria economy, greed and monopolist are controlling the market while the government are not bordered and helpless by greedy market union control, just give me the minister or commissioner for commerce and see me deal with those greedy traders, they are the ones increasing prices and changing market forces and Governments are not helping matters because they not checking them and no sanctions on them, when a market or traders know that government will either close down the market because high price or auction their goods , nobody will tell them not to mess up the economy, it is in only Nigeria that a trader will increase the Prices items and tell you boldly that if you don't want to buy that you should leave His shop and nothing will happen 1 Like |
