This thread is to clarify the misinformation on this top https://www.nairaland.com/7392840/real-owners-lagos-locked-alaba Alaba International Market was not closed by lagost state government but market leaders The leadership of Alaba International Market on Thursday justified why it shut down the market following Wednesday’s clash between traders and tax collectors. The PUNCH reports thahttps://www.nairaland.com/7392840/real-owners-lagos-locked-alabat one person was feared killed and several others injured on Wednesday when traders clashed with some tax collectors, aka agberos, at the Alaba International Market, in the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State. The warring factions, who were in their hundreds, deployed different weapons, including stones, cutlasses, wood and axes, during the affray. A video clip seen by our correspondent on social media and confirmed to be from the clash, showed the two groups hurling cudgels at one another. But in a statement on Thursday, the Alaba International Amalgamated Traders association said the need to protect lives and properties informed their decision to shut down the market. “The extreme extortion going on, especially between Volkswagen bus stop and Alaba market is becoming so unbearable as traders are made to pay a fully cleared container or a truck a whooping sum of N70,000 to N100,000 before they can be allowed to convey their goods to the market; it is the same for those supplying goods from their warehouses. “For traders who cannot afford or who hesitate to pay are either beaten up or wounded. Sadly enough, only yesterday we woke up to the information that a new loading point was to be instituted on the already constricted Alaba road which has already been taken over by petty traders who were given portions to display wares to the detriment of existing shop owners, also completely defacing this market of international repute. “To ensure this issue was handled amicably, the Alaba amalgamated leaders quickly contacted the executive chairman of Ojo Local Government who promised to call them to order, we also contacted the interim caretaker committee chairman who also promised to call them to order but surprisingly on Tuesday the 19TH of October we were greeted with chaos in our market as hoodlums that we cannot quantify trooped into the market with guns, machete, and other dangerous weapons; shooting and maiming both buyers and traders who are doing their legitimate business to the extent that some were killed and several other wounded. “To this end, we want to say enough is enough! The Alaba international market traders association has decided to shut down the entire market till further notice to avoid further loss of lives and property and will remain shut till: “These criminals are arrested and brought to justice. The Removal of all kiosks/petty traders causing blockade along Alaba international market road. That all toll collection points will be at the Volkswagen bus stop and the chemists’ bus stop. The Reduction in outrageous fees collected from containers, trucks, and other vehicles,”. https://punchng.com/why-alaba-market-was-shut-down-traders/?amp 1 Like |

Extortion is too much over there, sometime in 2009 i went there to buy some electronic gadgets only for me to pay some money before i could jump over a gutter, and those guys were mean looking and ready for trouble, i saw people paying and jumped the gutter ooo, i asked how much they said 50 i gave the guy 200 naira and ask him to remember my face anytime i come back, but since then till date i have not been there again mainly because i dont base in Nigeria. So i dont doubt the magnitude of extortion that resulted to this clash. 3 Likes |

Moh247:The thread is not about who controls the market but why the market was closed and who closed it. Lagos State need Alaba just like Alaba need lagos state. Even the Yorubas in the market are not in support of the Agberos because its affecting them just as it's affecting everyone 18 Likes |

Moh247:In the whole world, no where market crises occur frequently like in Lagos. The problem has always been people who drag land without a job. There are markets in Port Harcourt, Kano, Gombe, London, America, Egypt etc. We don't read news of traders' clashes. Lagos should behave like a centre of character and excellence. Nobody came to Alaba for free o. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Moh247: Stop reading the Constitution upside down. Their is nothing like Ruling family being in control of the market accept community market where the traditional ruler supretends. The Markets are under the Local Government Area administration only. Alaba Market is an international market not a village or community market. 5 Likes |

Moh247: This is the problem with this country, clearly reasons have been given for the chaos but for some reason you ignored everything about the actually topic and started your usual tribalistic rants, the agbero's are constituting nuisance and extorting people which is affecting every single person in that market which I am sure comes from almost every tribe in Nigeria. However tribalism will not let you use your head... Is it right for agbero's to be extorting people? And making life difficult?, all this trickles down to the final consumers, let's try and move this country forward and stop all these silly tribal jabs at every given opportunity. 6 Likes |

Someone just had to clarify the misinformation that has been dishing out here, reading all the tribal comments here it’s really disgusting. The government didn’t shut down the market , the market was shut down by the traders themselves(the whole amalgamated body) came together and decided that it’s best the crisis its been resolved. Alaba has a lot of both Hausa and Yoruba traders that are importers and everyone is tired of the extortion. From the pics below you can see the market PRO is a hausa man , nairaland should at least filter the kind of disgusting tribal news that circulates here . Peace . Lagos is a state in southwest .. but as e Dey go.. in next 8 years .. Yoruba will lose Lagos state to igbos It may sound funny .. but that’s the reality.. the tribal slurs will turn to full blown inter tribal war .. very crude and heartless war that will consume Yoruba land.. simply because Yoruba land will be center of this war .. Yoruba must seize the part of peace ... before chanting war ... negotiations and diplomacy means seceding off rights and privileges which might never be recovered Dem no Dey use musCle stand E always start play play.... but Na reality .. Yoruba tribe must apply wisdom |

After working and spending billions there, na for baboons to siddon chop remain. If they didn't build the market on that abandoned waterlogged bush, would we have agbero criminals asking for levies? Can you agbero criminals go to Agege hausa market at mosalashi to ask for taxes from the Northerners? 2 Likes |

Moh247: Obas/traditional rulers do not control matkets, local governments do. Why should thugs be used as tax collectors in lagos the so-called centre of excellence? Written and non-written policies of the state government on revenue generation breed thuggery. |
Re: Why Alaba Market Was Shut Down – Traders by Moh247: 8:15am On Oct 22, 2022 |
joyandfaith: As long as Local Government Authority is in charge of markets and traditional rulers are part of Local Government Authority with revenue shared by LGA and Traditional rulers We will keep going in circles.. The so called agberos collecting revenue at Alaba pako bridge linking okokomaiko are mostly Ibos and they collect money from anybody regardless of who you are ... The ones in Alaba Rago are hausas . |
Re: Why Alaba Market Was Shut Down – Traders by joyandfaith: 8:25am On Oct 22, 2022 |
Moh247: It is wrong for thugs to collect revenues for government at any level. This is not tribal issue. Lagos state government encorages thuggery. There are igbo, hausa and yoruba thugs. Thuggery driven revenue generation is not barbaric. Obas have no power over markets. Obas have no constitutional roles. 1 Like |
