It is like this because there is higher voter responsiveness in the North than the South. On most election days down South, you would find many people relaxing in their houses as though it were a public holiday. But the Northerners see voting as a divine duty.

So the presidential candidates are just being honest with themselves, and are exercising pragmatic judgment.
