Enugu: Security heads vow to end kidnapping along Ugwogo-Opi road

…As Gov. Ugwuanyi, Army GOC, Police CP, DSS Director, others visit hideouts, take decisive measures

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, on Thursday, led the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Umar Musa, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, the Director of Department of State Services (DSS) H.M Daluwa, the Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. M.K Ibrahim, among others, to Ugwogo-Opi road on a strategic assessment of the area, including the hideouts of kidnappers, with a view to decisively ending the recent kidnapping incidents along the road.

Addressing newsmen during the on-the-spot assessment visit, the GOC, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Musa, who spoke on behalf of the other heads of security agencies in the state, confirmed that “the perpetrators are purely kidnappers.”

He assured the public that the combined-team of the security agencies are taking further steps into the bush to apprehend the perpetrators, rescue the victims and end the menace along the road.

“I assure you that we are going to go deep into the bush to pursue them and ensure they do not perpetrate more harm along the road,” he said.

Acknowledging the presence of Gov. Ugwuanyi on the visit and his utmost commitment towards ending the security challenges being posed by the hoodlums along the Ugwogo-Opi road, the GOC assured the public that “these criminals will be fished out and they will be dealt with.”

Maj. Gen. Musa advised members of the public to report to the security agencies whenever there is any incident rather than rushing to the social media, stressing that “news items on social media platforms are usually unconfirmed incidents and could send wrong notion to the public.”

The GOC maintained that Enugu remains a peaceful state notwithstanding the unfortunate incidents along Ugwogo-Opi road, saying: “We are here; we have seen the deployment; this state is peaceful but once in a while you have criminals and I assure you that these criminals will be fished out and they will be dealt with.”

Earlier, Gov. Ugwuanyi visited the GOC 82 Division of the Nigeria Army in his office in Enugu where they met behind closed doors before they embarked on the assessment visit to Ugwogo-Opi road with other heads of security agencies.

This road is so short and has no major big forests. Keeps me wondering how these kidnappers can operate in such a small distance and go scot free. In addition, security agents especially the police are collecting bribes at every 1 km.

As a matter of fact, there were no many cases of kidnapping on this road until one police residence is built along the road and additional police post introduced. The security agents need tell us their roles in all these kidnaping. A lot has gone wrong in this country my people.

If you are still bent at voting these criminal APC/PDP then I pity your generations.

After the rumours of the mysterious helicopter that dropped people in the bush in Enugu, kidnapping just skyrocketed. Aside this road, there have been numerous cases of kidnapping along 4 corners side.


Students were kidnapped and govt and it's agents are going about there normal duties. Worst still I heard the sch were still having lectures and exam is around the corner. I asked, where is the SUG.


Govt inaction breeds injustice, injustice breeds resentment, resentment breeds spirit of revenge and spirit of revenge breeds reaction by the people which eventually leads to insecurity, throwing the country into chaos.

On issues like this is what UGM capitalize on to recruit members. Tomorrow you will be wondering why some people don't what to see check points along their roads. That road has nothing less that 7 check points across it.

If govt knows what is good for them, they should better rescue those children before the end of this month.

The army couldn't foil the kidnap that happened a few meters from their checkpoint, na after these few days they want comb the forests to find wetin no dey fear them. Nigerian security personnel are either not serious or are complicit.

Who else noticed that all the security outfits in Enugu state are headed by northern Muslims? And the Kidnappers disturbing the state recently are Fulani herdsmen infiltrating from Benue state. I don't think anything would happen to the Fulani herdsmen, at worse, they would lay low for a while.

Just imagine. The entire leadership of the security forces, including army and police, in Enugu are northerners... Musa this, Ahmed that, Ibrahim so so. Why? And you expect them to take action against their fellow useless northerners who perpetrate these kidnappings in Igbo land.

I always feel very angry when I hear that Fulani bastards continue to kidnap people in Igbo land or anywhere in the South. It is an insult. Let them retreat to their Zamfara, Katsina or Kaduna to kill themselves for all they care, but not in the South East. Imagine what would happen if a gang of Igbo kidnappers dare to carry out operations anywhere in the North, targeting northerners! It's not even possible, so why are these Fulani animals allowed to operate unchecked in the South East?

Something is fundamentally wrong with this country.

Yeye govenor.

It took the kidnapping of the formal SSG before Ugwuanyi could make a move. For the past few weeks people have been kidnapped in that road and he did nothing,he was busy eating in government house and following Wike up and down.

Enugu State can't wait for this clueless governor to move out next year.

Enugu State is now in the hands of kidnappers.

No, this road connects Abakpa Nike - Opi - Benue state

9th Mile is practically impassable because of the terrible condition of the road mostly used by heavy duty truck.

Insecurity will continue to be a problem in this country, until everyone decides to play an active role in tackling it. In as much the government has the lion's share of solving the security issues, what part are we prepared for play as citizens? Most of the forests in the east where these kidnappers base belong to one community or the other, those kidnappers don't camp in 'no man's land', it's the responsibility of these communities to be more security aware of their hinterlands and report any unusual activity they notice, foreign people can't just come and reside in your forests and you turn a blind eye to it, government security forces can't be everywhere at the same time (and it's obvious they're not even ready to be), most of these kidnappers settle community leaders in the affected areas so they can operate in their forests, I strongly suspect some of the locals are also complicit in the security issues going on around their environment. In as much as the responsibility of tackling this issue majorly lies with the government security agencies, we shouldn't rely on them anymore because it's obvious they've been compromised. Let every community rise up and tackle this security issue from the roots, because these people can't operate without a base, comb your forests and farmland regularly to ensure they're not hideouts for criminals, Involve physical and spiritual methods to root them out if possible. At this point, it's very unfortunate we can't rely on the government Completely to protect us, let's devise ways to help ourselves in any legal ways that we can, at the same time holding the government accountable to their responsibility. Finally let's use our power as voters s wisely in the the forthcoming election.
