Russia is not all about flattening Ukraine, definitely not, if that was the goal then Ukraine would have been flattened by now. Talking about weaponry from the west, there's a reason they don't want to arm Ukraine with long range missiles and that's simply because they know Russia will hit back and hard...NATO are just trying to prolong the war as long as possible even if it sees UKraine fighting with just one limb just to reduce Russia's stockpiles but Putin in his wisdom is mostly deploring soviet era stockpiles, only using their modern weapons once in a while...Russia are patiently waiting for when NATO enters the war officially for them to declare full blown war...

Also, America's huge defense budget is not for research and development of weapons alone, they have bases across the world they have to maintain, they have their carriers stationed world over so, they need to spend to keep all that moving...

I don't even want to talk about the hype and what have you...See Iran that the West will make you want to believe are worse than Nigeria producing weapons that have the West concerned...Iranian drones are destroying Western weapons and defense systems in Ukraine...

You are making the point inadvertently. America failed to rule Afghanistan but they didn't fail to conquer. They conquered Afghan and Iraq sharpy without blowing the place to smithereens or losing much men. USA lost only 7000 soldiers in 20 years there They failed to rule, which requires the buy-in of the populace which an occupying army rarely gets. Even Britain ultimately failed to rule Nigeria if we take that to its logical conclusion

Conquest requires good logistics, good intelligence, air superiority and good arming of infantry for short range fighting. Russia lacks all these and success they've had is in launching long range weapons of annihilation from the black sea. It's not difficult to know why. When you are competing with a world power (USA) and you only.have 1/10th of their budget, you will prioritise the big ticket items (cruise missiles, nukes) with your limited budget, but in terms of conventional fighting equipment on.the ground, Russia is seriously underfunded in relation to USA.

Mariupol below is hardly what I'd call conquest. Cruise missiles turned this place to Warsaw in WW2. Claiming rubble is annihilation not conquest

They only had to make noise to show their disapproval of chemical attacks but they focused on the bigger problem of ISIS. USA is not that interested in Assad or getting drawn into another Iraq situation and they know the alternative to Assad is a power vacuum and ISIS type characters. They are just paying small lip service to their Saudi and Turkish allies who want Assad out but actions on the field show mostly bombing campaigns against ISIS not Assad. Assad was even a useful guy to keep around to help get rid of ISIS

Even the few hundred FSA fighters they trained, they made them promise to only attack ISIS and most of the fighters declined, so they closed the program.
