Mkenya2019:
There is no much tribal difference - majority of DRC and Congo - was kongo kingdom - with one tribe Kongo/congos - speaking one language.
That is why both countries are named Congo.
The problem is lack of gov capacity to enforce security - more like Nigeria and most of Africa.
The country is too big to be governed by too broke gov - add huge intractable forest.
The country need serious federalism/devolution.
If not being split apart.
What helps Nigeria is federalism.
DRC need more of that...strong regional gov...with enough money to enforce law and order.
It's literally a huge jungle.
Of course when government capacity breaks down tribal differences rise to the fore. Take for example the maniama river incidence where tribes that had always lived in peace suddenly turned upon each other because of ownership tussle over the river for diamonds and other minerals. Even within the Kongo tribe there are subdivisions.

Only when gov has monopoly of violence will a country stabilize. DRC need federalism. They need to spend on basic infrastructure but most importantly on the army and police.

The same is true for almost all Africa countries - security has to come first. Museveni & Kagame in East Africa have tamed their country - by working on security sector.

Sometimes dictatorship is okay for some of these countries. DRC - is so unsafe - everyone run to urban centers - kinshasa has 20 million people living in shanties - because out in the jungle it wild wild west.

GeneralDae:

Well Congolese have their own exposed and educated class too like the Southerners.
I don't think lack of exposure is the Congolese problem. I just believe in the midst of the chaos they need some strong men who can hold the country together (to an extent) and use tact/skill in dealing with the Western powers. This is what Nigerian generals from the early 1970's up until Abacha did to prevent civil wars and other vices (from both the north and south).
In Nigeria's case there have also been several external efforts to mine her resources endlessly like in Congo and cause unrest. Outsiders most likely poisoned Abacha in 1998. Also in 2002, our largest armoury of weapons stored in Lagos was mysteriously destroyed and those weapons were never replaced over time until Buhari (big mistake).
After that incident, Bokoharam and Niger Delta problem began to slowly rear their heads with supply of superior weapons from outside. Bokoharam and the others didn't just start today or in 2009.
Yes, I agree with you to an extent. Nigeria has also had its fair share of interference from Western disruptive elements.
But Congo also had strong men but it lacked the kind of structure Nigeria had. Before independence we had universities here, we had doctors, teachers, historians and soldiers trained abroad. We had a kind of consciousness different from what the Congolese had. They had little education, even their best. It made it very easy for their country to be destabilized from without.

The same problem is still there today. Even lowly Uganda and Rwanda have a lot of influence in Congo and the Kenyans are also muscling their way in already.

The case is akin to but at the same time very different from Nigeria's case. Instability and boko Haram stuff can easily spread in the north due to lack of exposure and poverty. If the rest of the country was like that, we would be like Congo today or worse. That's what I think Sha.

It's a lost case. Mobutu had the best chance.

DRC is free for all. It's huge intractable forest. Twice size of Nigeria and space to add Kenya. The Belgium tried because the only remaining infrastructure is the railway. The roads are the worst you can imagine - almost zero tarmac road outside cities. Huge free for all mess.

UN has 20,000 troops; Uganda has theirs; Rwanda theirs; and country is still too big!!!!!!! Infact entire AU should contribute each 5,000 troops to tame congo.

DRC is just a jungle in literal sense of the word. The only semblance of order is in urban areas.

Jungle people eating monkeys. No roads. Just rickey rail-line and the huge congo river - it takes a week to navigate through it from east to capital.

How will the naira improve when demand for dollars and borrowing keep growing?
Why won't it improve, fuel and petroleum derivative account for almost 40percent of all our import.
The forex we spend on them will be saved nd not to talk of forex we will realize from export to African countries.
Bro, this is the time to bet on the naira

Cedi is slowly gaining against the dollar, its now ₵13.63 according to the Bank of Ghana and other currency converters like Google. Hopefully, this improvement is not shortlived.

13.01 by BOG and 13.50 by bureaus but this is not the momentum that will bring it back.

Real results will manifest after a year

Yeah I guess the president's speech to investors that their money would not be lost made some investors regain confidence in the economy perhaps.
Speculations drive currency deep dive a lot.

Yes his commitment to IMF = means commitment to reforms - and perhaps some panic buying of dollars is starting to slow - but we give it few weeks

Very insightful comment. I never thought about it like that. It makes sense. Nyerere of course was a great nationalist, but TZ made it easier for him.
What's happening in Tanzania is the same as what is happening in China in regards of Mao. Tanzania is by far the easiest country with a large population to govern compared to other countries since there is no enough numbers in the ethnic and religious sense to cause problems that a lot of nations are facing. Even when it comes to religion, most of the Muslim population is located at the coast but with Dar es salaam having over 6M people and almost evenly split in between, its difficult to divide people on the basis of religion too cause no one group is predominantly located in one area. If we dig deep and put aside the propaganda of the CCM (Which I'm a fan for. Don't judge me) Nyerere wasn't quite an exceptional leader in any sense. He handled the economy and the nation as a whole poorly. He gets praised because of the political apparatus that he set up in place that's why its very rare even in Tanzania to hear people criticizing him which is strange for a country what has all the potential she has and which he ruled for over 20 yrs being in the current position its in right now.

But looking at kenya tribal setup; it not that different from Tanzania; we have relatively small tribes; kikuyus at their apex were 23% - now down to 17% - that is largest. The thing as politics become competitive folks will create alliances; we have GEMA; Kalenjin; Luhya; name; all attempt to create bigger tribal groups; like Nigeria North or Igbo or Yoruba - which really amalgmation of small tribes to mega tribes for political negotiation and horse trading.

So there is no doubt that Nyerere tried to unite and create a national identity from a splintered country of small tribes - as there is also no doubt he bankrupted Tanzania.

Nyerere did all this with GOOD INTENTIONS and utmost good faith. He retired owning a bicyle and one house. That after admitting his economic policies had failed and resigned. He is closest to great african politician - even if he got wrong the whole socialism/communism.

You got it right.

It wasn't the lack of having a big dominant tribe which made Tanzania tick.Rather,it was the sacrifices which nyerere and his party TANU (CCM) which made Tanzania to be a non tribalist nation. If we check TZ, the biggest tribe is sukuma with about 10m or 16% of population, kenya has kikuyu with nearly 18% and S.A. has Zulus with almost 16-20%.
But kenya and SA has more tribalism while Tz with similar bigger tribe has less ttibalism.

CCM and nyerere messed up the economy but on social cohesion and forming a national unity they got it right.

I think people who downplay what nyerere did are using the theory of Tz having no dominant tribe to evade the sacrifices needed to form a one United, less tribalist nation. There is nothing in this world which can just appear by itself.Societies are made.Wars are created.Tribes were made, tribalism was made, and the same tribalism can be removed if right measures are applied .

Your urban centers are ugly. Just accept and move on. What you have been making noise here with are just slums. Example is this one.
