That is the main issue - when are we going to get governance right in Nigeria? Security, infrastructure, power are generally getting worse in the country. The same campaign promises for decades! Primusinterpares: 2 Likes 1 Share |

Bksense: Only stupendously wealthy people purchase houses outrightly with cash. There is nothing wrong with the mortgage system. The same system has Nigerians owning two to three homes with good financial planning. It is way better than building houses and accumulating dead capital (no be me talk am, na PwC Nigeria say so). The jobs to earn good salaries exist; what is left is you as the person managing your expenses. Investment opportunities abound, and with your strong passport, you even enjoy investment opportunities in other countries. No one shuts down investment schemes brazenly like Rise and InvestBamboo were shut down only to be approved again. These talks of McDonald's and all na 15 years ago talk, recent migrants are doing well, delaying gratification and compounding their investments. BTW, do you know better than Nigeria's elites who did the same during their prime and are citizens of developed countries? Some of these people you lampoon who japa'd could be your investment partners tomorrow should they decide to return home (many will anyway but in a stronger position than they left). Should you not be preparing yourself for these opportunities rather than wailing day and night that ordinary citizens are mimicking their elites in what they do rather than what they say? 16 Likes 1 Share |

Bksense:Have you tried to build a house in Nigeria to know what it is like? You say we can't afford to buy a house without mortgage but do you know how much the 5% down-payment for that mortgage is? Can you confidently say you can afford that as you are in Nigeria? Let me break it down to you. You want to buy a town house of say $800,000 but before you can go for a mortgage you need $40,000 cash as down-payment. Whether you like it or not, convert that $40k to naira and tell me if that won't build a comfortable house in Nigeria. 7 Likes 1 Share |

naijanaso:Oga! Na from here I dey pay school fees for my children and it's not cheap! If you work hard enough here, you'll make your money and live a comfortable life. And what you don't know is that the Nigerians I know here are bringing in their family members into Canada in droves and oftentimes through school. Do you know how much it costs to spend a minimum of 2 semesters in a school in Canada? That's the reason they don't send anything home, they are investing in the future of family. Since japa people say Nigeria is about to collapse or may likely collapse so why will this company see prospects in Nigeria while Nigeria are resigning to Japa to work in Amazon as warehouse worker .while Amazon is setting up in Nigeria . 4 Likes 1 Share |

Bankowner:You understand the situation well. Nigerians in Canada are doing everything to bring their siblings, nephews and cousins into Canada whether through study or provincial nomination. Most of them won't tell you. Don't listen to anyone discouraging you from coming to Canada if you have the opportunity except your financial situation in Nigeria is really good like being able to afford international fees for your kids for their degree, medical trips abroad if situation demands, ransome money if kidnapped (God forbid). 7 Likes |

Gerrard59: This real estate issue in Nigeria is a complete mess, especially Lagos. it doesn't make any sense to me at all. The price of a piece of land in VGC is around 270Million meanwhile that is the same amount as the price of a Fully Furnished Duplex in Manchester UK when converted to pounds. UK has minimum wage of around 1,536P while Nigeria is 30,000 Naira. A decent 2 bedroom flat in Lagos cost around 50M for Island & 30M for mainland with no mortgage options. Imagine if my salary was 500k Naira, which is a big salary in Nigeria. It would take me almost 20 years to save 50 Million. The choice of buying land & building house is another problem, most of the affordable land you will find are inside the bush along Redeem camp road & very dangerous. Then Land Grabbers will come and beat your workers like crazy during development. I love Nigeria oh, but the real estate we have is a total nonsense. No regulations, nothing. Infact it is a major reason to why Nigerians are poor. 25 Likes 1 Share |

Creamcrest: Shootings and gun violence happens in the US, but it does not affect the vast majority of the populace. I’ve lived in 4 states over 17 years and never had a problem with violence. In Nigeria, even your governors and pastors are not immune from violence, armed robbers and kidnappers. Yes some Nigerians have access to 24 hours electricity, but they must be wealthy enough to be able to afford inverters and solar infrastructure. That amounts to <0.0001% of the population. By contrast 99% of the US population takes 24 hr electricity for granted with no need to invest in anything else. The idea that “most Nigerians can easily build their houses” is false. <0.001% can truly afford it. Most of those who can afford it do so by stealing public funds. How many Nigerians can truly build homes on their legitimately earned income? The average American can own a home on an average pay check. 25 Likes |

Bksense: Life abroad is lonely, only if you want it to be. Otherwise it’s absolutely fun. I would rather pay through my nose for 24 hr electricity than pay through my nose in Nigeria for non-existent service, and still have to pay through my nose to maintain a generator. A McDonald’s job of $1500/month also comes with benefits you don’t get in Nigeria - health insurance, retirement benefits and educational support should you choose. Not bad to be honest. 21 Likes 1 Share |

Munamoqel: Much of this is meaningless… the Nigerian economy (or whatever is left of it) has ZERO positive impact on more than 90% of its populace. Take away oil (which is heavily dependent on foreign oil companies), the Nigerian “economy” is no better than that of Burkina faso. Of course MTN wants to expand infrastructure in Nigeria. It has a large market to exploit… most of that money goes OUTSIDE the Nigerian economy. 15 Likes |

Nigeria is a country of both extremes. If you are an old money, new money, or cruise at the toppest of the elite class, naija can be heaven. You will enjoy high social status, and can afford your security aides, bribe your way out of anything, in a culture you are bred in. But if you are poor in Nigeria, or even middle class, then it is only a matter of time before the sea of societal problems drowns you, and for this people, it is understandable if they decide to leave. But in any case, just do you. If you have to leave, feel free to do that. The world is your home. 47 Likes 2 Shares |

TWoods:the bolded are wildly inaccurate and exaggerated. Most working class folks use inverters now just as most homes now use boreholes for water. I have been using an inverter right from 2014 even as a bachelor with 120k salary. Till now I have 24hr electricity as do most of my contacts/friends etc. Having an inverter setup is pretty commonplace these days. It is actually very easy to build in Nigeria thanks to lack of regulations. Not everyone will live in Lagos, as Nigeria does not start and end there. I got mine sorted before I got married at age 30. Buy land today and with enough funds on standby even with the horrendous exchange rate you will build a 3-bed tastefully with 15m total (land cost inclusive). Buying is even easy now, 6-7m and you'll still get a 3-bed in an okay area. It always easier and cheaper to buy houses as people only sell houses out of desperation. Ppl selling lands are not usually desperate to sell. Smart people are buying property for really cheap rates at the moment. Screw Bitcoin, buy houses! PS: I never even got to 500k monthly salary till 2020 when I resigned to face business squarely. Sales reps in good companies/multinationals like Merck, BAT wey I know dey build block of 4-6flats, most of them still under 40. Artisans, meat sellers sef get their own house. Fancy or not, it is theirs. So scratch the only the wealthy can own house thought. 15 Likes 3 Shares |

truthsayer009: The one wey dey burst my head is when people use their earnings in dollars/pounds to build houses in Nigeria, collect rents in naira and reside in developed countries. If the person plans to return to Nigeria after hustling, I can understand but spending that much on a property in VI when the returns are so poor, and demand is not high is nonsenscial to me. It even gets worse outside Lagos. Land prices in Owerri/Enugu are ridiculously so high for a city that is very unsafe and high-paying jobs aren't ubiquitous. Rather than do such as an investment, I take the money to Mexico, Portugal, Chile, Spain or even Namibia and build a hotel. At least, tourists and digital nomads visit/stay there regularly. Bksense: When they run out of points, they resort to ad hominem slurs. FYI, I am not one of those who say the blah blah in the abroad is better than a banker in Nigeria. My economics teacher in secondary school did not teach me that nonsense. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Treadway: That is true. But you have to consider that for someone like TW who has lived abroad for a very long time, he and others like him are accustomed to a certain lifestyle and desire to be within certain facilities and amenities many places outside Lagos cannot afford. My major issue is insecurity. It is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs at work. As for building houses/flats to rent, provided they earn in naira, that makes sense. Not using dollar earnings to invest and get naira returns, except it is long-term business investments like factories and service deliveries. 7 Likes |
