I actually wanted to make a thread on this today and advice newbies finding it hard to get jobs to not give up.

We are an agency and not a product based company so I can't really say how this will affect us yet. As for work I work more hours and work weekends to make myself more valuable to the company i work for. I have been doing this for the past three months now and got a raise. Monday through to Sunday at least 10 hours daily.

It's not easy and it's not even December yet.
.

Please take it easy on yourself.

I would say if you have a job put in extra hours. Justify your position and your pay. For those looking, don't be discouraged. Booms and bust are part of life. It's why you need to build reserve and avoid lifestyle inflation when the money hits.

It's not easy and it's not even December yet.

My only problem with this layoffs and hiring freezes is that they will make remote roles very difficult for Africans to get. There's very few remote roles available now compared to when I started in 2020.
you mean the African that refused to develop their self ___ only common sense can solve this black people issues of no job __ leave school to remain jobless is the African priority

Don't be surprised though. We pay debt with 100% of our revenue. Using loans yearly to pay salaries. So much doom

Twitter and stripe lay off approximately 50% and 14% of staff today respectively. More firms plan to do so in the coming months(foreseeable recession).

How do you feel at your workplace?

What's the situation there?

Oga...pls don't come with negativity...twitter lay off doesn't mean other companies will follow suit or there will be recession whatsoever.....there are jobs out there, one can only prepare nicely to make sure he/she is the right candidate a company desires to hire.

some of those laid off will be replaced by new inexperienced hands on lower pay and less steeper pay increase curve.

This is from the tech space perspective. Yes! Opportunities are out there, but firms are cutting costs by downsizing staff. Even here in Nigeria

Many folks that beef on Nigerian "tech bros" as being proud cos they earn in dollars are actually happy to see the layoffs. I would say future proof yourself. Learn a combination of niche skills (not necessarily in programming) so you can easily switch and adapt if the need arises

I actually foresee more remote openings for developing countries. Companies are reducing costs. IBM are engaging Indian devs at the expense of US devs. Years ago they already moved some of their operations outside of the US. Amzl is setting up a dev center in Africa to employ hundreds of devs. These guys will do what the US folks are supposed to do. Other companies are also outsourcing.

Bro, networking is not an easy task especially to programmers.A lot of us are introverts/ambiverts
I understand grin

But networking does not have to be anything to complicated. It can be as simple as just cold emailing various people in your field.

This is spot on. On the other side, some European firms are outsourcing their open roles to skilled developing countries to reduce costs.

It's a difficult market, and I sense a change in hearty paychecks for developers. The market might never be the same again.

I just picked that extra hours point you made...thats a Gel

This might be a myopic take. I don't know how old you are but if you are old enough you will know that economy in western countries have a cyclic pattern. It constantly oscillates between growth and recession, the growth usually lasts 5 to 10 years with about 2 years of recession.

We are in the downturn and it will change in one or two years.

I own my business and sales plummet drastically. In the average, $2500 weekly and most times, more but last two weeks, you hardly find work cos demand slows down and trucking don't go out often and if they don't go out often, it will not breakdown and hence, no need for repair guys. Period like this is the reason to always have savings that you can fall back on.

This is one of the major reason i advise people to also try freelancing because you must always get projects if you are good.

The solution is very simple, Over Employement (OE). Always make sure you maintain at least two remote jobs at any given time. If J1 lays you off, you continue with J2 while looking for a replacement for J1 and vice versa! A lot of companies are still hiring in US especially MSPs. And if you are in US and happen to have a secret clearance, then you are already above the water.

The freelance market is always a buffer till you get a full-time job.
silly to rely on freelance job as a permanent and main work. the market is very volatile and things can change so much in very short time.
