To begin with, I can not even find an artiste with good lyrical content and their songs In the top 10 or even top 20 to say the least on the Nigeria Apple Music Charts,
Artistes like Brymo, Asa, Johnny Drille, Lady Donli, Bez, Timi Dakolo, and Darey Art Alade don’t appear on the chart with their songs with good lyrical content written all over it, Most of their songs even struggle to be in the top 40 charts and yet Nigerians drag the artistes that knows the Nigeria market and what Nigerians want every day for singing songs with below par lyrics…

I was even surprised when I was checking my Twitter page on a certain day and I found Johnny Drille tweeting about being happy about his song, the one with Don Jazzy getting in the top 40 Nigerian Apple Music chart which I find weird…

In my opinion, this only proves one thing,

1) Cautious and lyrically wise music won’t get you anywhere in Nigeria and if it could then not somewhere far. Judging by how far and or how successful the artistes who were and are cautious about the kind of lyrics they put out to their fans go … Nigerians are jolly and merry people, so they want to have fun and only few people of them have the time for lyrics.

To back up my fact, I checked Nigeria's top twenty (20) Apple Music chart lately and below is the attachment of what I found on the chart. Top 20.

Who are to blame? Fans who listen to music or artists who make them?

Again, in my opinion. No one is to blame, You cannot fault the fans for requesting cautious music with good lyrical content and at the same time, you cannot fault artists who had already studied the targeted markets and given them what they want… The majority wins everywhere…

I think the fans who crave lyrics when listening to songs should know the artistes who make that kind of songs and stick with them… they should stop looking or requesting lyrically wise music from artists who don’t make them because they think it’s not good business for them, In Nigeria Lyrically wise music rarely get the recognition they needed so why would I keep making them if I think music is business and the lyrically songs I’m putting out as an artiste is not bringing in the expected money and it’s not even giving you the supposed recognition … what prompt me into writing this is about the latest single “Money and love” Wizkid recently put out off his Incoming album titled More love less Ego.

People keep saying the song has no lyrical content and the artiste is stuck in his past so therefore he should stop making music, I could remember that things like that were said about his Last album Made in Lagos when he dropped “Smile and No stress” as the leading single off the album, but the album later went on to be the most charted and arguably the greatest ever release out of Nigeria judging by the digital success and awards the Album rakes in… it was the first album in Nigeria and first also in Africa to be certified Gold and Platinum then double platinum in the United States and it also earned him a Soul Train award, BET award, BMI award, American Music Award nominations and two Grammy Nominations. Whereas artists that see conscious and lyrically wise music as a priority are back home waiting for Nepa to bring electricity so they can record.

Nigerians rate songs based on artist's fame, not based on the song itself.

If you do not lavish money and chill with big boys, Nigerians will ignore your good song. It takes foreign agencies to reward those good musicians. Sony Music rewarded Tekno before Nigeria began to respect him. See how white people gather at Cavemen shows. Guiness rewarded Cavemen in Nigeria.

Only 2Face Idibia manages to get a befitting recognition in Nigeria.

This also affects music producers. Producers who don't lavish money and chill with big boys are boycotted by big artists. Selebobo (aka Mix Monster) has always been a monster in beat making, mixing and mastering. Biggest artists then ignored him. Only Tekno, Yemi Alade and few upcoming artists then recognized and consistently patronized him. But the same Sony Music entered Nigeria, recognized and rewarded Sele Bobo. Sadly, Dekumzy has not been able to get his own deserved recognition. But Dekumzy, being a wise guy, resorted to making scores for Nollywood movies and he makes money from that. Artists like Bracket, Flavour, Desperate Chicks and Stormrex had their most populous songs produced by Dekumzy. Should I talk about the popular movie score that says, "You are the treasure that I find, the love that I seek for many years was right inside..."? Everyone loves the song but only few people know the song was composed and perfomed by Dekumzy.

It's the youth that usually carries much weight and decides the kind of music and artist popularity in a given generation but unfortunately this present generation of youths listens and vibes to crappy and meaningless music and artist.

Nigeria's best and evergreen meaningful Hip Hop came to and end around 2010 or so with the likes of Idris,2face, 9ice,Mode9, Face etc. Anything after these guy's era are mere crap or average at best. I find it very difficult to listen to all this new songs full of slangs, Tramadol, SK and the rest.

80% of Nigerians want some Songs which they can dance to.
That's why majority of songs in Nigeria, lacks lyrical content and Message!

The remaining 20% of Nigerians have a taste for good music!

I only listen to American Rap music....that sh!t makes me happy.......got dope lines, messages and some real life sh!t!

Youre expecting wise lyrics from party jam full with slang, are you kidding me, when all men eyes don close who get time for lyric.

Nigerians like street music or music with some street sadly some of these music are lacking in some major areas needed for global recognition bt they are widely accepted by the streets and people with mid taste in music.

Same applies for any country that has a huge street population. The level of the streets dictates the level of the regular music.

However there are talents that don't follow the street sounds and still doing better than the street music, Tgey dictate their own pace and even dictate to and dominate the street. They are the exceptional and above the regular sounds.

Now the likes of Johnny drille are actually average not exceptional and his genre doesn't help matters much either. Sm1 might rate high is fireboy tho he still has alot more work to do in terms of originallty.

what makes music exceptional is a combination of things like lyrics, style, adaptabilty, versatility, genre, originallty, relatable, emotional level, dexterity and including ur delivery.

Abeg rest. Listen to what you like. Hunger and poverty dey land musicians will do what has been selling, record labels too will promote same.
