TEST PREPARATION TIPS.
If you don’t know what you’d like to pursue today, but are fairly confident you’ll take that next step in the next five years, consider taking your standardized test while you’re still in school or shortly after. Your GMAT and GRE scores are both good for five years and the best time to take either test is while your basic math is still fresh and you are already in the habit of studying every day.

GMAT VS GRE: THINGS TO CONSIDER
Consider the following while deciding which test to take:

If you’re unsure which path you’ll pursue, take the GRE. It will keep all your doors open, as many business schools accept both the GRE and GMAT.
While many business schools will accept both the GRE and GMAT, the admissions committee may prefer that applicants take the GMAT. Do your research and ask around.
If you don’t have a strong track record of working with numbers and quantitative analysis, consider taking the GMAT. Although both the GRE and GMAT rely on the same basic high school-level math, the GMAT’s Quantitative section is more focused on word problems, rather than straightforward math, and the GMAT’s Integrated Reasoning section will test your data interpretation skills. Also, GMAT questions typically have easier numbers to work with than those on the GRE. The GMAT is also more forgiving in the way it is scored—to get a high score on the GRE, you need to get practically every question right, whereas you can get many high difficulty GMAT questions wrong, and still get a comparably high score.
Take the test you’re most comfortable with and on which you’ll perform the best. To gain admission to competitive MBA and graduate programs, you’ll want to apply with the highest percentile score you can. The easiest way to see which test you like best is to take a practice or a diagnostic exam. You’ll get a good feel for each exam’s structure, content, and timing.

I paid 120k when I registered in September, I don't know the current price with the increment in exchange rate. however, I have written my exam since October and I still have access to my report on ETS website.

Thank you for this information. I’m studying to write the exam, should I still follow the guide you gave in 2014?
It's been 6 years since i wrote this post and i still can't believe how this post has transformed into an amazing community of people working collaboratively to pass this exam. That said, i believe the materials and guidelines listed in the original post are currently inadequate. While it's been years since i wrote the GRE, there are two key information that are timeless.

1. The only resource you need is the Official GRE prep book. It's an excellent resource written by the creators of the exam. Who best to learn from than those who created the exam? Ignore every other book and just get the Official GRE guide.

2. The official GRE practice tests are extremely valuable. Powerprep online and Powerprep plus online are all you need. They are the closest substitute to the real exam. Before taking the test, i beg you, please do at least one Powerprep Practice test. I would strongly suggest you do the Powerprep plus online test. Yes, its a paid service but trust me, it's worth every penny. Please note, I failed to do this and it was evident in my scores.

Once you get these resources (the book and the practice test), the rest is up to you. Create a study plan and then study as much as you can. As you study, please try as much as you can to do the exercises in the books. Your learning is complete when you can answer questions related to that concept flawlessly. If you can’t solve problems, brotherly…sisterly…your learning is incomplete. Kindly go back and relearn the material.

Finally, after studying, do the Powerprep online or Powerprep plus tests. It might take you weeks or months to study and write the exams. It doesn't matter. Do what works for you with an eye on the college admission cycle. At this point, you are most likely prepared for the main exam. Go forth and slay your test with grace.

I know the process may not be as linear as stated above. You would have days where you have no desire to study. Sometimes, you might even feel lonely. This is entirely normal. To keep going, surround yourself with like minded achievers - they are many amazing people on this forum who you can connect with. Additionally, pay attention to your health, sleep and diet. The brain works superbly when you are well fed, sleep well and have a stable emotional life.

Before i leave, i just want you all to know that life is a beautiful journey. Stay focused and keep working on your dreams. One day you would wake up and discover you are living your dreams. It has been that way for me. I started with the believe that i would study and live in the US. Today, i am living that dream.

I used basically Manhattan 8 series for my preparation. I would advise you supplement it with other materials like Kaplan, Barron and official ETS guides, as you can see my score was not too high.

It took me about 3 months, though my preparation was on and off as I am a family man doing a 9 to 5 job. I think preparation time depends on how much time daily you can dedicate to studying.

I paid 80k for the exam.
