while the Europeans destroying Nigeria have thier hold on the country, nothing is ever going to work or improve.
The only thing you can do in this type of case is to setup local farms on your streets on the side walk etc , in your backyard , on your roof etc so you can have more control over the hygiene of the food you eat.

The colonial masters have imposed too much suffering and hardship on Nigeria for you to trust anybody with food hygiene, cause everybody is too desperate to care so much about hygiene.

Dont assume you have a country, take charge and create local solutions at street level.

Acidosis:
I have always indicated the need for the federal government to take over the duties of local government environmental and sanitation officers. Local governments have failed in Nigeria, so no one is checkmating our market men and women. This is why people sell rotten meat as suya. It is the same reason market people sell drinking garri (uncovered) in the open space, usually beside a filthy blackish gutter with over a million houseflies and rodents.

After drinking that infested piece of crap soaked in ice water and groundnut, they end up spending N5,000 on medical treatment. That's how we recycle poverty in Nigeria. The cost of ignorance is very expensive.

If we hire 500k graduates as environmental specialists, our national health subsidy/insurance budget will be reduced by 60%. Additionally, we would see a remarkable improvement in the purchasing power of the people, our life expectancy over time, and, of course, a reduction in the unemployment rate.

But what do I know? A government bereft of ideas would rather employ 500k youths as political npower agents without roles and responsibilities or 200k personal assistants in ballot snatching and vote buying.

Right now, we are selling sickness in the marketplace and pumping more money to treat preventable illnesses and epidemics.

Sorry but we don't need more of Federal government in our lives as Nigerians. We need less of federal government and more of local government because every Nigerian live in a local government

sad sad It's really unfortunate. In Agaie, Niger state where I am serving as a corper, the Nupe people there are so dirty in habits that they can beat a pig hands down in dirtiness. I regularly see some of the girls who sell fried potatoes, fry them beside mound of eaten sugarcane peels and what have you.
I never eat their food,to avoid Had I known from Cholera and Typhoid.

Please....
Which institution, or agency is in charge of sanitising and maintaining the hygiene standards in our markets??
(I guess it is the Ministry of Environmental in the various States.. -- that is,, the Environmental Health Department or Agency).

Do you see all those people that are selling food-items that we are NOT going to wash again before using them, those people should be well educated and enlightened more on extra hygiene.
Most especially those people that are selling Pap (akamu), Garri, Crayfish, Ogbonor, Egusi, Cooked Food, And so on..

They should be taught very well on how to cover those things they are selling with a clean transparent sheet,, and to also have tap-installed buckets filled with water for them to be washing their hands frequently.

The other day,, right in front of me,, one of those women that were selling PAP in the open market had to sneeze.. She sneezed three times while she covered her mouth with her two bare hands... Then she placed those two hands on the pap she was selling,, trying to sell to the next customer that was already waiting..

Eeeuuwww..
So disgusting.!!

So many people are lazy. What will it take us to buy corn and prepare pap for our family consumption.

This reminds me of nysc camp. When it was our platoon's turn to work in the kitchen, we were told to select all the rotten tomatoes into basins. I thought we were to throw them away, only for the chief cook to tell us to take them to the grinding machine. It was that rotten tomatoes we used to cook the jellof rice. From that day I never ate any food in camp, I only ate the things I saw cooked in front of me. I lived on fried yam, fried plantain and noodles until camp was over. I lost so much weight. The same thing goes on in buka's, they use rotten tomatoes to make their stew. I weep for my country.

Just last week i was taking a walk to the bank. I observed an aboki stooping down to urinate. He was massaging his balls or washing his privates with water cos he spent a while squatting. As soon as he was done, he stood up, walked over to his sugar cane wheelbarrow and proceeded to use those hands to serve sugarcane for some waiting customers. Haba! Hand that you just used to touch your blokkos.
And the customers just collected the sugarcane and proceeded to descend on it like someone in an idp camp. Totally ignorant of where aboki just put his hands on.
That day, i swore that anything mallam dey sell, i no go buy again.

So so the germs wey enter her house dey gyrate dey enter customer body.... But truth be told, even though we cabt be too careful, we need to always wash everything we buy in this country

Months back, they showed a video of one aboki that uses gutter water to wash fruits.... You can imagine the kind disease he was washing into the fruits

I remember visiting a friend in Aguda- surulere. I saw a lady, selling food, cleaning some rotten tomatoes. I felt like throwing up.

Most Nigeria markets are extremely dirty.....for example our slaughterhouses.........
They kill those cattles, goats in an extremely unhygienic environments , the stench coming outta those place, could give a pregnant woman miscarriage......

What you have termed very bad apparently is what has kept you really healthy & fit. It has been scientifically established that the environment has overall impact on your immune system before your diet, simply put, exposure to bacterial and fungi makes your immunity stronger against future infections, this is why people with autoimmune disease are mostly found in the hygienic westernized nations where there immunity attacks its own self due to over exposure to antibiotics and the likes. Read up on "Healthy gut, healthy you." To get informed.

I pity those that find it difficult to cook in their houses, dem go eat rubbish tire. Most Nigerians are wicked in nature, they don't care about their neighbour. All they're after is money.

There's one particular shop in my street where the woman fries fish and expose everything in a big tray. To my surprise people still patronize her. I would rather eat my food without fish than buy that poison.

I was shocked when my friend came back from class one evening with fried yam and chicken wings and invited me to join him. I asked him where he bought them and he said the aboki close to school gate. I almost puked and told him I don't wanna eat, he was angry and started calling me names. Ajebuta, inspector etc. grin

I didn't eat because of obvious reasons.

Illiteracy. Hygiene is taught in school. Not everybody had elementary-level education so such case is prevalent. The biggest problem is, even in 2022, babies are born who wouldn’t see the four walls of an educational institution. Those individuals will continue the cycle.

IMO, The most part of hygiene is thought at home. Schools only teach it theoretically. It was my mom who taught me how to sponge myself properly, brush my tongue and inner corners of mouth and teeth, wash my clothes properly, the list goes on.

Hygiene is a form of consciousness, once one is trained with it... It will reflect in everything facet of you actions

Yea, many of them use rotten tomatoes. It is way cheaper for people that make food in commercial quantity or seeking to cut cost.

You're right. All I do whenever I buy most foodstuffs is.
1. I use frying pan (nonstick) to fry my crayfish before I grind myself at home.
2. I make my pap, akara myself
3. Whenever I buy watermelons( I prefer buying the cut ones because I don't really like watermelons much)always wash before eating.
4. I don't grind my egusi in the market because I buy in large quantities. Whenever I need I wash and blend.

Which part of the country are you from? No offence intended. Just want to clarify a point?

Don't bother about mentioning that again. The point is you can't be a jack of all trade. Being lazy is not the main reason people don't cook at home. People living in Lagos will explain it better. My ex came from the north and was wondering why lagosians buy food outside until she started work. My sister wakes up around 3.30am everyday to prepare food before getting ready for work.

Most times, you will leave home around 5.30am to beat the traffic and when coming home, you will close around 5pm and get home around 11pm and still need to wake up around 3.30am if you plan to cook before leaving home. Believe me, it is not the kind of life you would pray to live.

I was in Ibadan recently and was surprised that once it is past 5PM, food vendors don't cook again when the one cooked finish. I walked the lenght of the area and all of them said food has finished.
Whereas in Lagos, some vendors will be getting ready to cook another meal around 9PM because there will still be workers on the road.

So many reasons to state and this is just one.

Humans have only 24 hours a day to do so many things. It is always easy to call people lazy until you find yourself in their shoe.

You are right though but who said we can't wash crayfish? You are supposed to wash ur crayfish with salt and water before blending so if you ask me crayfish shouldn't be on that list, it's just like people who buys and slice their vegetables in the market instead of coming home to wash their vegetables with enough water and salt before slicing it. Moreso water boiled at 360 degrees centigrade will kill any germs in the garri we bought from the market, some people are naturally dirty and no amount of govt regulations can take it away from them. If the regulatory body can deal with wares already displayed in the market what about where it was originally prepared before bringing to the market? So to me the best we can do is to help ourselves buy from a relatively neat environment and also help ourselves in maintaining a certain level of hygiene when preparing those things at home. It's as simple as that.

You will be marveled at what people do behind the scene.

That Crayfish/Shrimps part annoys me a lot. The way Big and Numerous Flies are always hovering on It at the market Is so annoying and unhygienic. They won't bother to cover It. This Is what sometimes discourages me from buying crayfish at the market.

I have seen a Northerner washing plenty bell peppers with the dirty water on the road around ile-epo market. That day I was marveled and viewing from my car but I wasn't with my smartphone. I wanted to video the Idiot..

Well said. There were things I always used to brag that I would never do. By the time pressure hit me, I developed serious waist pain that had me crying to sleep. Nobody told me to delegate some routine chores. I can’t kill myself over wife-materialship.

Imagine 3:30am? And na 11pm she sleep o!

I kept seeing SALT everywhere. Please take it easy. Don’t in the process of killing germs, destroy your LIVER. Hypertension is real. These micro organisms are not earthworms, your salt does nothing. You can ask a microbiologist for more perspective.

Monitoring the food you'll eat is the last thing your governor cares about right now. Can you mention one thing Nigerian governors want to do apart from paying salaries and awarding road contracts?

Without a federal supervisory agency, that idea will never work. Local government are too inactive and incapacitated to manage and dispense environmental and public health policies without the backing of the federal agencies like the Ministry of Health.

We have to institutionalise that policy right from Abuja and ensure that all states comply. If you leave it to the state, those lazy governors would not do anything, including those that have the highest rate of cholera outbreak in their corridor.
