And it is always best to just bench such players and only use them specifically in their best roles in the right tactical setup that will suit them depending on the opposition too.

We cannot keep accommodating deficiencies and ignoring the right tools we can begin integrating to uplift our plays.

But no... some will rise up and remind us that both are based in the EPL.

Amedino99:
iheanacho and aribo are the two players we can't identify their main position in the team and trying to accommodate them in the team has not worked well for us.

After five years, we did not grow an inch under Rohr. We did not build a solid team. We were never a convincing side. If that is how you want us to play for the next 20 - 30 years, you are free to enjoy that.

Even under Keshi where I was still critical, we could meet France and give them a game. France resorted to injuring Ambrose and Onazi to have an edge. We played the Catalonia team and matched them. We lost to Spain but we gave them a match. We played Italy and left them by two goals in the first half. They had to bring in Pirlo to reclaim the midfield.

We ripped Mali by 4 goals at the AFCON. It was not all good but were were a good side. All of a sudden, you guys want us to park bus and grind football.

I wonder why I even bother. People want us to play Rohr way.

Frank "The Tank" Onyeka vs Portugal yesterday:

45mins played.
32 touches.
25/28 accurate passes.
2 pass entries into Final third.
1 interception.
2 recoveries.
2 fouls committed.
0/3 ground duels won (only minus which is even unusual because he excels naturally in duels. He is "the Tank" for good reasons).

Onyeka registered more pass entries into the final third than Ndidi and Aribo combined in the game.
*Ndidi played 45 mins. Aribo played 69mins.

I have my criticism of Onyeka's game observed overtime and it still stands but truth be told he did better than Ndidi and Aribo yesterday and it won't be the first time too that he trumps both in terms of SE Performances.

Onyeka's limited ball playing is still an issue in the long run but I will rather have him in my Midfield for his box-to-box plays and vertical driving traits than a Joe Aribo whose role just has to be redefined in our Super Eagles.

Aribo is no bonafide midfielder. We have to move forward with the truth

And mind you, this ball playing deficiency is not just a midfield problem. It is also a defence problem. Ekong on the ball too is quite under average. Akpoguma is not convincing. We need good ball playing CBs who also excel in the dirty aspects (or some) of the role. CBs who are also quite mobile. We looked too rigid at the center in defensive transtions.

THE DEFEAT TO PORTUGAL WHAT WENT WRONG?

It has never been about what went wrong, but what keeps going wrong.

"You can't keep repeating a particular routine expecting different outcomes"

Every tactical setup, requires the right personnel for application.
A 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 or any other tactical setup and the attendant variations of them, require playing personnel with the right technical and tactical qualities to thrive.
Wingers required to prosecute 4-4-2 have qualities that are quite different from wingers for 4-3-3.

In the former (4-4-2 ) the wingers are directly exposed and in sync with their fullbacks.

They are to do the following:
* Provide cover for their fullbacks. this involves additional defensive abilities.
* Provide support for the forwards.
* The ability to score goals is not primary to what is expected of them.
* They must possess decent ball passing abilities such as the ability to give long balls, crosses, chipped passes.
* They make decisions typical to their roles. for instance, shooting at goal is not usually the first option for a winger in this setup, rather the winger utilises feasible options to make the ball available to the forwards.

In 4-3-3, the winger in this setup is referred to as a forwards or striker. The involvement with their fullback is more diminished because of the presence of a midfield trio, ipso facto They are expected to have more offensive duties than defensive.

The following is expected of them:
* Score goals. This is primary to their roles.
* Assist the Center Forward in many ways ( to be discussed later).
* There is more flexibility to the manner at which the winger contributes to defense. This is essentially a coach's preference or tactical approach. Nevertheless on the average they spend more time in the opposition's half.

In Super Eagles. judging from the descriptions given of wingers in 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 , it is very obvious that we are deploying the wrong personnel in the chosen tactical arrangement. For instance Moses Simon and Ademola Lookman are forwards (strikers) and do not have the required defensive capabilities and passing finesse to thrive as wingers in 4-4-2. They are modern forwards groomed to thrive in a front three. They lack the ability for build up play and ball progression. That is the job of midfielders. That is the job done for them at their clubs. They are usually at the receiving end.

If we must stick to 4-4-2, We will have to go for players who will not only provide good defensive cover, but also decent ball passing ability, players groomed for build up play, and patient on the ball.

That was between 2016 and 2019. No be Algeria wey humble Rohr twice eventually in 2019 and in 2020?

Same coach lost to little CAR in Lagos, messed up a 4-0 home lead in Benin City and struggled to escape with a 1-1 home draw in Lagos in the final matchday of WCQs 2nd round group stage to make the Final Playoff round.

Abeg.... Rohr in his final 1.5-2 yrs in the Super Eagles was worse than an eye sore.

You are as good as your last games abi. It also applies to Rohr. His last period with us was factual indication of what he had become as coach with nothing more to offer.

So please spare us the tales of 2017/2018 period. Truth is we had few signs of the rot even in Rohr's good days pre-2020 before it became full blown in the 2020-2021 period.

That is where many people miss it. It is about the philosophy. Selecting a team that fits your philosophy. When Nigeria met Brazil in Atlanta, there was a gulf in class when we compare talents. From attack to defense.

Brazil boasted of the best player in the world Ronaldo De Lima. The next year from there, Roberto Carlos was the second best player in the world. Rivaldo later became the best player in the world. There was a big EPL star in Juninho. Also, I think Dunga and Tafarel.

We knew they were far better than us but we set up in a brave explosive fashion.

Rohr had no formula to build on the team. It was a poor scouting mission and his negative philosophy meant he will keep selecting negative players.

So he might grind result but after five years, the team he left was a dead team. No growth.

When once you see the midfield list, you know that we are not moving towards dominance.

I keep pointing to the fact Westerhof called up a 16 years old Amokachi to the Super Eagles camp. As in, a secondary school boy. Why? He was searching for players that suited what he wanted. Most coaches we have don't scout.

Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 3:09pm On Nov 18, 2022
You are lacking midfielders, you keep pulling out a thin list of players. You cannot go from league to league. Top to backwater to academies, to African league and look for what you want.

Then invite them to train with the team and screen the best.

Now Nigeria, a whole Nigeria cannot provide midfielders that can hold ball.

A country that produced the likes of Okocha, Oliseh, Mikel, Christian Obodo, Wilson Oruma, Emmanuel Ebiede, Raheem Lawal, Joel Obi, Sunday Ibeji etc. As in a whole Super Eagles, lacking creativity for years. Na wa. I tire.

Let it be that Peseiro is the one entirely in charge of player invitation.

I am yet to label Peseiro a bad coach, at least not yet. I want to exercise patience because our players appear more drilled and better organised, than what i have seen of them in recent times. If you watch closely the transition from defense to attack seems better than before.

It is just that he is yet to get personnel deployment right in his chosen setup.

A high profile 'friendly' away game against a Portugal side vastly superior by any chosen metric, be it quality of playing personnel, team cohesion, tactical input from the bench etc was always very likely going to end in defeat. And of course it did in a comprehensive manner.

If the partisan fans of the Nigerian team were to be less emotional and more rational in their assessment of this game they will quickly realise that as embarrassing as the final score may appear, there is little to gain in being overly harsh in their criticism of thier own.

The game served its purpose for all parties involved. Portugal are ready for the big time and are dark horses going into the world cup.

For Nigeria it was a good opportunity to measure where they are in their rebuild project following an ultimately poor AFCON showing earlier in the year and World Cup Qualification failure.

The new manager has not had the easiest of fixtures to usher in his regime. Save for the quick fire AFCON 2023 Qualification games against lowly Sierra Leone and Sao Tome, away games to Ecuador, Mexico, Algeria and Portugal for any team in the mental and transitional state of this present Nigerian team would not be the way Jose Peseiro would have proposed starting his career with the Super Eagles.

Arguably the simplest observation one can make in watching Nigeria's games over the last 2 years (with the exception of the AFCON 2022 group games and the game against Sao Tome) is that the team is unable to control the tempo and flow of a game and so rather than impose any given game plan on the opposition they seem to go into games with the hope of being able to weather whatever is thrown at them and build from there.

Any opposition scout will have picked up on this strange approach as they have done the same against all levels of opposition faced, from Portugal last night to The Central African Republic in their shock home loss about 2 years ago.

The danger with this plan is that the team ends up fire-fighting right from kick-off l, trying to find a solution that reliably works with the team already picked and in battle.

More technically, again, opposition scouts will have long noticed that the midfield selections are always thin and in the players selected, their poor passing range and inability to 'play triangles' between themselves make linking up with the attack and recycling possession almost like a lottery. In this scenario even less accomplished players can with a bit of application overrun the Nigerian midfield causing games that look straight forward on paper to quickly become awkward.

The start point for finding a solution to this problem is rather obvious, you would hope for the the sake of the fans.

Haha!! Morocco ke? Expect to be disappointed again, broda. I gave up on those Arab countries when they started losing to the likes of Saudi Arabia and some minnow Asian countries. Take for instance, Morocco was unbeatable before the last World Cup, only to lay an egg once they stepped out in Russia.

Anyway, I have learned my lessons. Right now, I am with Senegal and Ghana. I expect even Cameroun to do better than Morocco and Tunisia.

Outside of Africa, I am all for Messi winning his first World Cup. Unfortunately, the absence of Giovani Lo Celso might disrupt their chances. But if the Argies can’t then I will pitch my tent with Brazil and the Netherlands. I think those two countries play the best football in the world right now.
