some mediocre players are playing in Europe today because they were born in Europe or they grew in Europe. Some good players in Africa age, place of birth and nationality factors made them not to play in Europe or big leagues in Europe. Some of our best are in the trenches.

Europe is different from Europe.

Mediocre players can be found mostly in eastern Europe and in second divisions. That's why despite many being born and grew up in Europe, they are still playing in obscure leagues.

However, can you please mention the mediocre player born in Europe in our team? I want to check something. cheesy

oga leave emotions and sentiment abeg.

We know a lot of players who grew up in trenches that made it to top europe clubs and leagues

Stop sugar coating in order to suit your sentimental and emotional narrative. Talent no they hide, even the likes of yaya and our own great jay jay just to mention a few started off from obscure leagues but rose to top leagues and clubs and today are regarded among the best from Africa to play the game. Scouts aren’t partial nor sentimental when scouting players to clubs overseas. If you are good and have a good agent/rep nothing will hinder the player from being recommended to good clubs and leagues

not disputing that but many from the same trenches in our local clubs can’t propel their teams in common caf club competitions

Those you mentioned are rare breed that comes once in a long while. Generations come and go so discovering such huge talents from the trenches doesn’t imply that the same trenches is the only place where talents are surplus

National teams like Argentina went for over 2 decades to unearth another maradona in Lionel Messi

It took Brazil over 3 decades to unearth another goal scoring gem in Ronaldo de Lima after the great Pele

It took France almost 2 decades to hv another platini In zizou

Portugal spent over 3 decades before producing another big talent after eusebio in Figo before the emergence of CR7

And Cameroon over close to half a decade to discover etoo after legendary roger milla

Gents, Ladies, good evening.

As we all know, it's been rather a bad year for our football..At least mostly... we saw shege here and there...But there were also a few positives too.

In light of this, I'd like the thread's opinion as to whether the annual Nairaland Nigeria football fans award should go ahead this year? And if the thread permits,I'd like to organize the award again this year.

Those in support of the award to go ahead, click like...those against should click share.

Thank you

So, you have to raise the bar so tey you mentioned some of our best ever players. grin

Although, Osimhen is not yet in that class but you had to squeeze him in forgetting him and Lookman are among the top goalscorers in Seria A. grin

I don't know if Bassey that made Europa team of the season and still secured a move to Ajax is mediocre according to you. Yes! Bassey is not yet there but he is progressing just like those aforementioned players progressed during their young career.

Is Dresser who won Eredivisie top goalscorers, Europe conference top goalscorer and made Europe conference team also mediocre to you? grin

If not for his age, I don't think he will be in that team.

Is Aribo also mediocre who was arguably part of Rangers success to finals of Eùropa? grin

Which one is mediocre? I want to know precisely.

Thanks oohh Zuchyblink. Gracias on this point.

Simple Assignment for the house:

Abeg browse and see for yourself the leagues the likes of Tarek Hamed, Mahmoud Hamada, Ahmed Tawfik, Ali Gabr, and Moh'd Hamdi ply their trades.

Yep, you guessed it. Backwater leagues.

Even Trezeguet is in Turkey.

Old war horse, Ahmed Hegazy formerly of Semi's team, West Brom is now at Al Itthad in Saudi Arabia.

But it is only in Nigeria, that we don't rate players in leagues even more decent than these lots.

Once again, Zuchy, thanks so much. wink

Why not, we should goan invite Iggy back, since he is scoring in backwater leagues

I think we can still do with some quality FB players in our squad. But what you've just put up there doesn't invalidate zuchy's point. Ok let's compare some of the fb players you mentioned in your post to some of our current homegrown players.

Is Dessers better than osimhen, onuachu, moffi or even olayinka??
Has Aribo been able to outperform someone like Etebo or even a Ramon Azeez in the NT??
we all know chukwueze and simon aren't consistent performers, but has lookman been any better (albeit, during his shot stint with the NT.)

Now to the midfield, can we say the exact same thing we say about our attack? Answer is no so that is why we must look beyond the top 5 leagues.

Mister Man, we are talking midfielders and not wingers.

You asked about Etebo, a midfielder and now you don jump go Simon, a winger.

Is it hard for you to just stay within the context of a discussion?

Some of the attributes/parameters I listed are surely needed for other depts of the team but it was majorly focused on Midfield selection. Simple.

do4luv14:

The First casualties of this point raised is M. Simon, can't dribbles out of thigh space, wayward crosses,

Had not watch his Club games, But in GWG, He had been one dimensional, It makes me miss Vicmo

Mediocre is totally different from being average.

The question is, are these aforementioned players mediocre, average or above average?

Thanks mods for putting me in jail because of my 4-0 “prediction”.

7 things:

1. What happened to that team that flogged São Tomé ?
2. Bright Osayi performed so badly compared to Aina’s SE debut.
3. Onyeka brought his Man City A game.
4. Dennis should be our designated PK taker
5. Moses Simon should get the captains arm band
6. Etebo was so damn confident on the ball that he was spraying passes near the goal post.
7. We improved as the game wore on. We would have gotten back into the game had the PARTIAL ref not ended the game prematurely

Bonus: Peseiro is the best thing to have happened to SE since Rohr

Is this sarcasm?

Update: Tomori Should Abandon England, Consider Switching To Nigeria_ Babayaro Cries

Tomori was recently excluded from England's World Cup squad by Gareth Southgate despite his impressive for for club AC Milan.

Reacting to the snub, Super Eagles legend, Celestine Babayaro, has advised the player to switch his allegiance to Nigeria while he still has the chance. Fikayo has featured 2 times for the Three Lions despite 8 invitations.

"He is 24 year old and by the next World Cup he will be around 29," told owngoal Nigeria.

"That could work against him but if he wants to have a clear chance if going to the next World Cup, then he has to consider switching to Nigeria. He's still eligible going with the new rules," he concluded.

I was so glad that match ended

M7even:

Why are they all hyping Bright osay. Even in his personal mind he would have realized how badly he flopped. He was allowing that young black Portuguese left back have a field day driving foward at him. Aaah. So confused was he they took his wing for a ride in the first half hence the pressure that led to the cross hitting his other hand. He was stretched and well stretched till the second half. He knows in his mind he definitely was poor.

Moses doesn't have the required defensive capabilities....what? shocked shocked

Most of the players were misplacing passes. Iwobi was the culprit in the first half.

Moses does put up some defensive shifts, but not enough for a 4-4-2 winger. You can study his stats.

Italy never even fit get left back and AM like Maldini and totti since the legends retired cheesy

I doubt if Ukraine can produce another world class center forward like the great schevchenko in the next 5 decades

Till date Romania is yet to produce another Hagi

With the look of things with Belgium it will take decades for them to assemble another talented squad that can be compared to their aging golden generation

Same goes to Chile,Uruguay and Spain

I said midfielders because those attributes only apply to midfielders. And trust me, if we run that attribute test, several of our MFs will fall short. Only few will pass the test on the overall weight of having most of the attributes if not all.

Now, If I discuss wingers, defenders (CBs and FBs), GKs and strikers, other attributes not listed will be mentioned as well.

But yes, some attributes listed there for MFs can apply to other depts of the team.

Tu comprends?
