Ladies and gentlemen, here's my theory.

There has been some confusion over something that Peter Obi said yesterday. He said that Dr Peter Odili was his senior at Christ The King College and he explained that Odili was very good at football and that he motivated their football team.

Critics have pointed out that Peter Odili left Christ The King College in 1967 (Blerf, the famous biography site, says that he left in 1966) and that Peter Obi was born in 1961. This means that Peter Obi would have been 5 or 6 years old when Dr Odili left secondary school. They also point out that Peter Obi left Christ The King College in 1978, which means that he would have been in form 1 in 1974. Therefore, they concluded that Peter Obi lied. However, I have not made such a conclusion. There isn't enough information to conclude that Peter Obi lied. In fact, he could have been telling the truth. How come?


(I have searched for my old posts, but I can't find them, so I might as well tell the story again).

I suspect that the reason that some immediately believed that what Peter Obi said is impossible is because they are used to the way that the Nigerian educational system has been since 1985. They are not aware of what the situation was before 1985.

Before 1985, Nigerian children spent 5 years in secondary school (form 1 to form 5), then they wrote the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE), which was an Ordinary Level (O-Level) examination. Three credits from the WASCE could get you into university.

However, there was also the Advanced Level (A-Level) examination. You could spend an extra 2 years in secondary school (lower 6 and upper 6) and write an exam for the WASCE Advanced Level Certificate. Some people did the A-levels because it gave you direct entry into year 2 of university programmes, some did it because they wanted to gain admission into British institutions and some did it because they could not make the required O-level grades. The A-level classes were called HSC (higher school certificate).

O-level classes were contiguous, that is, you did form 1 and then you did form 2 immediately afterwards. That's how it went all the way to form 5. However, there could be a 3 or more year gap between form 5 and lower 6. This means that many people returned to secondary school many years after finishing form 5.

Football

This was a huge problem in football. There was a famous secondary school football competition known as the Principals Cup. It was broadcast live on radio and it was very prestigious. Some schools did everything that they could to win this competition. Some schools recruited people who had been stars in the competition many years ago and used the excuse that they were in upper or lower 6 to register them for the competition. This meant that you could even see who were over 20 years old playing in the competition.


Odili

This is what reminded me of the HSC. I immediately thought of HSC when they said that Dr Odili played football. CKC played some epic football matches against certain schools in Lagos back in the day (in fact, one of those matches led to the creation of the Nigerian National Team).

So, did Dr Odili go back to CKC for his HSC? I have been searching since yesterday, but I have not yet found any concrete proof of this. I'm going to keep searching.
