I tell you!

What kind of news is this? After 43 years?

What was the point of wasting the taxpayers' money to conduct an apparently sham election?

It is possible that the elections were also a means of siphoning money...

Otherwise Equitorial Guinea has all takes to be the new Kuwait of Africa.. It's is the same with Chad where the meagerly Oil earnings have been hyjacked by the Western countries for years while the people suffer.

The US foreign policy goal of making sure that African countries do not enjoy their resources while helping favourable despots to stay in power perennially in other to protect this ideology, is the main reaso why people like Nguema an his family are still in power raping and pillaging these countries all these years. This is no !ore neocolonialism or even imperialism. This is barefaced racism couched in all sorts of foreign policy tools.

Such leaders don't ever get fed up. They would rather die on that seat.

Possibly.

Meanwhile, Obiang has a taste for unlikely election victories.

He won the:
2002 election with 97.1% of the votes;
2009 vote with 95.8%;
2016 with 93.7%;
2022 with almost 95%.

( SOURCE: https://allafrica.com/stories/202211260005.html )

Do these figures seem realistic?

With the country’s population being fewer than 2 million, about 400,000 registered voters turned out to vote in this month's presidential election!

The citizens of that country should be ashamed of themselves for allowing President Obiang and his family to rule over them for the past 43yrs...
Nigeria is also tilting towards that direction.

Very interesting perspective you have there.

You mean that they are satisfied to allow only one political party rule over them in perpetuity?

That's quite a list you have there!

Leaders like them are part of the reasons so many Africans are running away from the continent.

If anything, the Japa wave is actually getting worse.

It is a Western problem!
When more powerful countries use their huge assets to suppress the growth of other nations, they should be called out for that.
No one is making any excuses for bad leaders who should be condemned for their failures, yet, that does not take away the fact that the Western world is mainly responsible for the carnage in Africa!
You assassinate good African leaders at will.
You send your military forces to undermine progressive African states
You impose stooges across executive mansions in the continent and use skewed global laws to help entrench them in power.
And after all these, you claim innocence?

You are absolutely correct. Nepotism is not good for democracy.

However, we can only teach someone who is willing to learn.

The challenge in many parts of the country is that many of the less educated citizens actually take instructions (on whom to vote for) from their political, tribal or religious leaders.

Again, many of these people are the ones who have PVCs. At the same time, they are neither on social media or even on the internet.

So, how do we reach and enlighten them?

Longest ruling president..not a good record to hold.

Yet he still won about 95% of the votes in this month's election.

Don't they have any opposition parties in Equatorial Guinea?

Yes, they do have opposition parties (as guaranteed by their 1991 constitution), but they might as well not exist.

Why? Let's take a look at the field of political parties in Equatorial Guinea:

1. DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF EQUATORIAL GUINEA
This is the ruling party i.e. the party of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
The party holds ALL the 70 seats in the Senate, and 99 out of the 100 seats in the house of Deputies.

2. CONVERGENCE FOR SOCIAL DEMOCRACY
This is the main "opposition" party.
They have ZERO seats in the Senate and 1 seat in the house of Deputies.

3. OTHER PARTIES
There are more than 40 of them, so we won't bother to list them. None of them has any seat in the Senate or in the House of Deputies.

These parties, extremely small and ineffective, fall into 2 categories:
A. Those aligned with the government to provide a façade of democracy, and
B. Those which are not registered with the government and are therefore illegal.

So, do you think there is any real opposition party in Equatorial Guinea?
