You have made so much sense in this piece, as for me and my family, we are going no where. How can i make 19m in Nigeria and use everything to japa. If i can make 19m here then i can make more. My children can go and study but me am going no where. This country is blessed and resourceful. If i travel at all is just on vacation. You hypocritical statement is very evident in the false hope you just gave yourself. |

Later that evening, I had another get-together with a second friend who relocates this week. While discussing his massive expense, he suddenly slouched in his chair, stressfully squeezed the empty ragolis bottle in his hands and concluded:
"Oremi, this relocation has cost me almost everything" "You don’t want to know!" He further sighed "You don’t."
Today, with the help and data from three (3) relocating friends, I compile the rough cost (below) for prospective relocating families (focus on UK) and a poem for my friend and Nigeria:
Cost of Japa from Nigeria for a family of 4= 180k Renewal of Passport Official rate 22k Accelerated rate 45k Some pay as high as 75k
Transcript 75k Usually, one parent is a student 30-45k for school runs 25-30k to send
Estimated Tuition fee deposit 11,000-18,000-pound sterling 4.5m most schools want 50% deposit
Proof of fund (In deposit) Family of 4 need 25m in deposited in an accoun 2-3 months
UK Visa 1.4m Family of 4 pay 475-pound sterling
NHF Family of 4 pay 875-pound sterling
Flight ticket 2.8m Depending on booking 700k person x4 Some have booked as high as 1.2m
Arrival Accommodation 4.4m 1st Month shortlet 200-pound sterling per week refundable deposit of 250 pound First 6 months at 750 pounds
Total Cost 19m for family of four to UK not Canada or US. It can be cheaper or more
Oremi, I hope we meet again, as you japa to find fresh grain, to return if Nigeria again reigns? God, will any leader ever end this drain? But prayers will be in vain, if in 2023, unwisely we vote again.
God bless everyone who has relocated. God bless everyone staying behind. God bless #Nigeria. Your estimate is actually VERY conservative, ma. At current rates/costs in the UK, that family will sleep on the streets. For a family of 5 - dad, mum, 3 kids (all under 10), you should budget AT LEAST N25m-N30m. 2 Likes |

Pojomojo: Team JAPA are among the lazy and irrational citizens. I wonder why many don’t think of the reason why they found themeselves to be citizens of Nigeria.
JAPA mentality IMO you have no plan to influence your nation or your society, it appears you’re not in tune with the purpose of your existence but only focused on your personal interest.
We’ve been lied to that life is what we felt it is when actually it’s extremely the opposite of what we’ve been told.
Don’t be surprised that citizens of civilized countries are tied of their country just as we’re tied too. Strict laws we don’t follow here, you’ll get there and comport yourself meanwhile, their citizens are tied of such laws cause they know some countries are lawless.
Wow, humanity on the run to nowhere when nothing is chasing them but themselves and they lament it’s life. This money for relocation is enough to set up a micro enterprise to meet the fast growing population in Nigeria / Neighboring African country, with a plan for upgrade of the business as the cash flow increases. There is no free launch any where in the world. Africa has a lot of gap and opportunities to be filled and harnessed. All the same relocation is good with respective individual evaluation of the opportunities and risk. For every thing in life, there is time and season for every one, so it is always good to get prepared for the opportunities.
My advise is that individual should relocate on personal reasons and not because your close friend or family member has travelled to the UK or Canada, The case varies and individual potentials, opportunities and luck varies.
A family of 4 that have truly "Japa" to the UK knows your total initial cost is highly exaggerated for the popular one-year masters.
1. School fees can be paid at an official rate (less than 500 nairas) and some schools require a 2k or 5k pounds deposit. This drops the tuition deposit to about 1m to 2.5m. If I assume a 5k deposit, it saves 2m nairas compared to yours.
2. For proof of funds (in interest), you need tuition balance + living expenses. Most school tuition is less than 13,000 pounds, and there are schools with less than 10000 pounds tuition. If you deposit 5000 pounds (2.5m nairas) for a 13,000-pound school, you will need about 8000 pounds (4m nairas) more for the tuition balance. You will also need 29,000 pounds for living expenses for a family of 4 outside London. (29,000+8000) pounds= 37,000 pounds (about 17.5m naira). At 3.5% interest, 17.5m naira will yield 612,500 naira. Saves about 1.9 million nairas compared to yours.
To-be continued.. All the best.! Peace I see your point clearly and I am not pro-Japa by any means but the truth is that sometimes you need to understand what makes these JAPA people to Japa. Among the things that can make someone to Japa include this massive insecurity in the land, unending ASUU strike, clueless government policies, family wahala, unending epileptic power supply, poorly performing economy, bad or inexistence healthcare and so many other reasons why someone might want leave this country for good. Everything is not about money. Sometimes, peace of mind is the driving force behind all these Japa tendency. 2 Likes |

Tell me what you have done with your money maybe I will have interest, don’t judge if I travel to uk canada or even Qatar with mine. When it comes to people finances and where they choose to live the rest of their lives, my brother it’s non of your concern. Their people in those countries export knowledge back home so that the ones home can be quickly prepared. BA, Project Mgt, Data Analyst, Data scientist these Indians learn this skills thoroughly before even travelling out. So when they eventually travel, they are more prepared than you in that labor mkt. You will in a python class learning how to code but the Indians have finished coding . Their people own many biz in US, UK, Canada and are willing to help their brothers free for work sponsorship. But the nigerians, MBA! You that just came they will charge you to teach you coding, bill your life if dey want to help you get work visa or sponsorship. And social media has really made lots of nigerians very stupid. The Indians here can barely speak English but they all passed IELTS with band score 8. It makes no sense the entire family travelling at the same time as many thought they would gat accomodation easily upon arrival, only to find themselves staying in an Airbnb for some weeks. sure, let one go and secure a place for the rest… That’s how the wise one does. But that doesn’t stop you all from getting your visas at the same time. |

All these waste of money just to come to the UK? Whereas i am looking to relocate to Africa. Namibia, Swaziland or Cape Verde . Maybe even Ghana. I grew up in London, i have even moved from London to a remote part of England 5 years ago.
London or England is not what it used to be when i was growing up in East London, everything has gone up in prices, food, cloths, transports, electric and gas bills, parking permit, i am paying high taxes, council taxes luckily for me i managed to buy my own home years back, gas bills has gone from £40 a week to £200 a week, i have just started using wood to heat my house, i am even using wood to cook outside outside in my garden.
By all means anyone who wants to come and live here, you are most wellcomed but be aware that the UK is not heaven. Some of us Brits are even looking to become Irish or even German citizen. 10 Likes 1 Share |

True it dey sup big time for here oooo, on another note, for anyone who wants to do business in nigeria in the future, try and avoid like Ebola any business in nigeria that involves power ( electricity ) Instead focus on ones that dont need power although these businesses may look boring and not so glamorous, So businesses such as Cement depot, Iron rod mini depot, Beer distubution business or mini depot, primary or secondary school etc buying and selling generally
Sometimes once you set up a business and the first thing you have to do is buy a diesel mikano gen in order to run the business, na so where problem dey start ooo
sometimes the other types of businesses i have highlighted above generally survive every economic climate nigeria throws at them even when dollars becomes 2000 naira to 1 dollar. Most hotels and cold rooms dont and wont survive such
This explains why back in the days some car dealers were just smiling to the bank anyhow, cos where they parked thier cars for sale didnt need power or anything to run it. But that changed now cos the internet has made everyone a car dealer.
Also Creche, and a post nursery and primary school ( is an underrated business in nigeria ). For the middle class who for some reason never leave nigeria, they always have good money to pay for thier kids or nursery or primary school education .
We would leave the discussion here for no w Nice insights!!! |
