Yes, so I see no reason why Nigerians continue complaining of food prices when the vast majority can easily grow, right there in the backyards, some of the things they need, in sacks.

Pretty much any food item can be grown in sacks....and with almost all year round great weather for most of the crops.

How many people have the backyard space you're talking about?

I, for one would like to go into small farming but where's the space? Is it in someone's compound ( rented apartment) I plan to achieve such?

If it's possible inside the house then fine otherwise, space is going to be a major challenge for achieving such.

1. How much backyard space do you need to put a 3 sacks by your back door?

2. If small farming is what you want, then you will need a good size piece of land, rented or owned. If a garden is what you what, you can definitely find space even if against the back wall of the building you live in or your balcony.

3. Stop with the silly excuses abeg! Even people wey live for face2face buildings still fit find small space for back of their windows to put a sack or 3. Folks need to start doing and stop making excuses.

Get or purchase a bucket with a tight lid with a hole underneath it —compost bucket —, and put all your waste food(no plastics, cans, etc.) from your kitchen, along with a paper that you intend to throw out, in there every day. The lid is there to make sure no animals get into the contents of the bucket. Then, get a couple of empty rice/garri bags, fill them with soil, and put some seeds in each bag of soil. Place All these in a corner outside of your kitchen door remembering to water the soil regularly - once or twice every week. After about 1 month, take a picture of the contents of your compost bucket and your soil bags and post them here for us to see.

What about a proper soil from the earth? Won't it work just as well?

1. The tight lid will keep odor trapped inside the container as the compost is formed, while also keeping animals out of the bin.

2. No need for "proper" soil. Just start with whatever you can get your hands on. The compost that will come from your compost bin will more than serve to provide all the nutrients your plants will need to grow. The key is to start.

So long as it is big enough. Bags are cheaper and fit better into available space, which is why it is used instead for such things. I would recommend a bag instead for the planting of anything.

Commonsense. The compost can be mixed with soil to enrich it or even soil sprinkled over the forming compost gradually, move that will reduce odour greatly.

What is holding you back from getting sacks of your own, even if just 2 or 10, and planting yam in your own backyard even right now? If you had planted yam or even potatoes inside sacks back in June when you responded to this thread, you would right now be looking forward to harvesting as we speak.
