The reason why it's so much more expensive in the U.S is because most of the cost goes to insurance. Surgeons bear a huge burden in liability that leaves no room for mistakes whatsoever and so no cutting of corners.

It's expensive in US because everything is expensive in US. The local currency of US is expensive sef. Has nothing do with insurance. How hard is it to figure out?

The best way to silence people is by providing authentic proof. Although it is difficult to get the salary estimates of workers in Nigeria. However, I do think doctors earn decently in Nigeria whether private or public.

I will be tying my being alive to the strength of the purse, were I to disclose the details.

These guys should just shut their ignorance in their recta.

2m is cheap.
Very cheap.

I didn't want to alarm anyone when I mentioned 2m.

Evidently you have no understanding of economics. Health-care is an unavoidable necessity in life and any force that artificially inflates the cost will be felt in all sectors of an economy, invariably.

But, know that I know what I'm talking about.
I have seen it. No be dem say dem say.

He gave you a good breakdown before he digressed.

What kind of surgical procedure are you talking about?

I’m not doubting that some doctors/surgeons would charge so high….do you think a surgeon in Nigeria should be paid N2m for a procedure?

A theatre case involves not just the surgeon but also anaesthetist, scrub team and possibly radiographer.
I know some over zealous doctors do the work of the anaesthetist assisted by quack nurses without the radiographer. In a strict and well regulated environment, most of these people would have their licences withdrawn.

Again I ask, if your surgeon is collecting N2m, how much was the anaesthetist paid? How much were the scrub nurses paid? How much was the radiographer paid?…or these people were not involved in the case?

When you need to do an ordinary fibroid evacuation procedure, take your 200k and proceed to Evercare. You hear.

When it is brain surgery, gather 3m and go to ordinary Empire Hospital in Bode Thomas, Surulere and get a surgical procedure.

If you need to use an ICU, please, hold 200k and check into one.

You will be okay.

And, if a Cardo Thoracic surgeon needs to open you up, hold your 1m.

Long shall you live.

Please educate me. I’m interested in learning.

I’m not doubting that some private practice charge a lot or that the doctors earn a lot…I know a hospital that carry out procedures such as appendix removal, hernia etc…the practice is a 4 storey building. I went there to speak to the owner but he was unavailable, the place was unhygienic, staff were grumpy, there was no wheel chair access, no lift and the theatre was not on the ground floor.

Back to my question…what kind of surgical procedure would earn your surgeon friend N2m per exam?

Aneurysm Brain
Pneumectomy lung
Open heart self-explanatory
Disc replacement

I witnessed 3 of these. None cost less than 4m.

Go check and verify how much any hospital with ICU costs.
Folks die from lack of equipment more often than lack of expertise.

Our doctors are gifted. They are knowledgeable. But, the but is the but. Nigeria happens to them and their patients. So, people die needlessly.

If a doctor warns you to get a hospital equipped with ICU before surgery, please, help yourself and find the purse to fund it.
2m will never cover the cost of such procedure. Forget all the abuses.
If you are in a government hospital, God help you that Nigeriax9 does not happen. If they need to evacuate you to a private hospital with ICU, bobo, start speaking in tongues.

Anyone have an idea of the salaries of doctors in Nigeria?

Or if you are a doctor in the house you can give us an answer

Depends on experience and the facility at which they work.

Housemanship - 180K (150-220K, depending on facility). Heard Hazard Allowance has been increased, so if implemented, that should increase these figures.

NYSC - 33K plus salary from the facility to which they are posted. Federal facilities pay about 60-70K, while state facilities range from 10K to 90K (average should be about 40K). Those posted to less busy facilities in capital cities may also be able to get extra income by taking locum private practice jobs.

Fresh doctor in a private hospital (GP) - 200K (Few facilities pay less, minimum 180K, while some pay more, 220-300K).
This pay increases with experience (with 2 years experience getting about 250K) but peaks at about 350/400K. At this stage, most doctors will have started their own private practices or moved on to residency.

Some GPs start their own private hospitals.
Small "blue curtain" clinics in small towns outside major cities like Lagos, Abuja with auxiliary "nurses" where the owner GP is the only doctor there, would earn the doctor about 400K monthly.
Bigger practices would earn more.

For residency, junior registrars earn 270-300K, while senior registrars take home 380-420K.

Consultants at federal hospitals start at 700K. Those at state hospitals and those employed as honorary consultants by universities may earn slightly less.

Consultants employed at private hospitals usually earn more. Here, the pay also depends on the speciality. A neurosurgeon will earn more than a family physician. Low end specialities can earn about 700-800K, while high end specialities like neurosurgery can earn up to 2M.

Consultants at government hospitals usually supplement their income with locum private practice where they take on part time jobs at private facilities (on paper, the government job is full time, but in reality, it's more of a part time job (Nigerian civil servant attitude) so they tend to have ample time for private practice even while practising at government hospitals). Extra earnings here also depend on specialty. Surgeons tend to earn more than physicians, since they can charge per procedure. These extra earnings can range from 300K-2M monthly.

Consultant owned private practices earn depending on the specialty. Orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons would very very easily net well over 2M monthly, out-earning a rheumatology focused practice for example. These figures are for single specialty private practices which are quite rare. In reality, most practices offer several other specialities in addition to that of the owner, by hiring other specialists on locum basis when the need arises.

Despite the name calling, bad languages used initially which you are also guilty of, I want to say that the above is filled with information and thanks for taking time to post those.

I’m aware of the procedures above but not the costs or how much the surgeons earn. Your first comment was on how surgeons would earn N2 per case and 5x a week and doctors ‘killing it’ part. If I was a doctor/surgeon, I’ll feel awkward or embarrassed by that. By the time you’ve gained enough experience to earn that amount, your focus should be about saving lives rather than the how much a case would cost. Those who asked you to clarify were not abusive. We learn….Millions of people are minimum wage with barely enough to survive the day and being down with a health problem is almost like one has committed a crime.

I’m not undermining the expertise of the doctors. The country is blessed to have them. Government’s ineptitude has been exploited with various private practices carrying out procedure which they shouldn’t and also involved in bad practices because the regulation of the profession is weak or non existent. Why would a patient has to fund and equip an intensive care unit (ICU)? as you pointed out? If a practice isn’t ICU equipped in the first place, how can they treat and manage a patient that should be in one? If you don’t have the equipment, how would you know how to use them even they were installed overnight, most medical equipment need training and competency ticked off before the staff can use them effectively.

The Federal teaching hospitals should be able to provide basic health needs but in my opinion, these institutions are glorified health care centres. The federal and state governments are not doing much…those responsible for the state of the hospitals don’t patronise them anyway…they’d rather spend the fund meant to acquire defibrillators and v60 machines to fly abroad to treat chest pains or bowel obstructions.

Lol stop saying what you don't know. Firstly, whatever income from the procedure will be distributed across your team. Even the anaesthesia doctor will have an equal cut.. . Also, what kind of complicated surgery of 2m do you want to be doing 5 times weekly with private practice? You can't earn that much in a government hospital and apart from the big name private hospitals, the remaining privates na mainly appendix removal and illegal abortion of like 30-50k dem dey do lol.

An average salary for doctors in government hospitals is between 120 and 200k. Senior regs in FMCs and teaching hospitals is between 220 and 270k. Consultants is 400k upwards ( although there are young consultants but most times you for don old before you reach that stage) Doctors don't earn much in nigeria . Many of them are struggling with their toyota big daddy and honda baby boy dem dey use do yanga up and down. Both professions don too cast moat especially that law.. Those one na charge and bail and property agents full streets.

Spot on, bro..you just nailed it.

I look at the number of law student pouring out of our universities and being called to bar and I feel sorry for them cos most of them will end up becoming house agents.
