Witch doctors receive whatever you give them.

But they would often ask for one white chicken, tubers of yam and Maggi cubes.

Don't ask me what the Maggi cubes are for.

Kind people, didn't even ask for groundnut oil.

Anyone have an idea of the salaries of doctors in Nigeria?

Or if you are a doctor in the house you can give us an answer.

Doctors in Nigeria are like the lecturers. They don't receive salary from just one source.

The ones in the hospitals of other government establishment are paid more than other staff in that establishment even when on the same level. They will coin one payment structure called CONMESS that is above all others. Still e no dey do them.

They will always go and do their private practice outside or even build their private hospitals and be referring patients there for better payment and concentration/attention to the patients.

They are so quick to recount how poor their reward is in Nigeria and how much more they make/could make abroad but will never tell you how much more it will cost them if they were to acquire the education they got with peanut in Nigeria abroad.

They think of only themselves as humans and more deserving of anything and everything more than every other person. They do not even consider the pharmacists and nurses that work with them as anything let alone other people/profession.

For doctors reading this; please note that every other services rendered to you other than the health services you render is much more subsidised than even your medical services. The money you pay to plumbers, mechanic and even your house helps here are in compared to what obtains elsewhere.

Be good at your craft and earn 2m per surgical procedure. And you can have 5 in a week.
Doctors make a kill for a living.
which surgical procedure will fetch 2m? Is it appendectomy or hernia surgery or CS or What? Unless they are into organ harvesting

That's not entirely true.
There are hospitals with specialised theatres already. You don't need to buy anything.
If at all you'd need to buy anything, patient would pay separately for that .
Doctors hardly earn 1m per surgical procedure, except for advanced procedures, or in a pricey hospital. It's the very few that earn that much.

Aneurysm Brain
Pneumectomy lung
Open heart self-explanatory
Disc replacement

I witnessed 3 of these. None cost less than 4m.

Go check and verify how much any hospital with ICU costs.
Folks die from lack of equipment more often than lack of expertise.

Our doctors are gifted. They are knowledgeable. But, the but is the but. Nigeria happens to them and their patients. So, people die needlessly.

If a doctor warns you to get a hospital equipped with ICU before surgery, please, help yourself and find the purse to fund it.
2m will never cover the cost of such procedure. Forget all the abuses.
If you are in a government hospital, God help you that Nigeriax9 does not happen. If they need to evacuate you to a private hospital with ICU, bobo, start speaking in tongues.

Abeg shift. These are not common/regular procedures. Only a handful of facilities carry out these procedures. You just pick a rare case to generalise.

2M surgeries in Nigeria is not common and does not come by on a weekly basis just as that person claims.

He gave you a good breakdown before he digressed.

What kind of surgical procedure are you talking about?

I’m not doubting that some doctors/surgeons would charge so high….do you think a surgeon in Nigeria should be paid N2m for a procedure?

A theatre case involves not just the surgeon but also anaesthetist, scrub team and possibly radiographer.
I know some over zealous doctors do the work of the anaesthetist assisted by quack nurses without the radiographer. In a strict and well regulated environment, most of these people would have their licences withdrawn.

Again I ask, if your surgeon is collecting N2m, how much was the anaesthetist paid? How much were the scrub nurses paid? How much was the radiographer paid?…or these people were not involved in the case?

I am shocked that the majority of surgery in Nigeria is not above 300k.

He is saying, the hospital wouldn't hand over the surgery money to someone because he or she did the operation.

Are you a medical doctor or do you work for government?
Medical officers earned from a salary structure called conmess. It's the best any professional could earn, though it may differ from state to state. A medical officer on salary grade level 12 (which is the entry point for doctors in the civil service) earned above 400k in Akwa Ibom State.
The federal teaching hospital don't pay as much the amount even in the same state because the chief medical director determines what each doctor gets as salary.
Private clinics pay what the owner of such clinic agreed with the employed medical officers.

Absolutely no government hospital charges that amount. Also, you're making it sound like these.monkes go to the doctors pocket. The doctors remuneration is his salary and any allowance that goes with it. Even if the hospital makes 1b naira, a dime doesnt go to the doctor

Depends on experience and the facility at which they work.

Housemanship - 180K (150-220K, depending on facility). Heard Hazard Allowance has been increased, so if implemented, that should increase these figures.

NYSC - 33K plus salary from the facility to which they are posted. Federal facilities pay about 60-70K, while state facilities range from 10K to 90K (average should be about 40K). Those posted to less busy facilities in capital cities may also be able to get extra income by taking locum private practice jobs.

Fresh doctor in a private hospital (GP) - 200K (Few facilities pay less, minimum 180K, while some pay more, 220-300K).
This pay increases with experience (with 2 years experience getting about 250K) but peaks at about 350/400K. At this stage, most doctors will have started their own private practices or moved on to residency.

Some GPs start their own private hospitals.
Small "blue curtain" clinics in small towns outside major cities like Lagos, Abuja with auxiliary "nurses" where the owner GP is the only doctor there, would earn the doctor about 400K monthly.
Bigger practices would earn more.

For residency, junior registrars earn 270-300K, while senior registrars take home 380-420K.

Consultants at federal hospitals start at 700K. Those at state hospitals and those employed as honorary consultants by universities may earn slightly less.

Consultants employed at private hospitals usually earn more. Here, the pay also depends on the speciality. A neurosurgeon will earn more than a family physician. Low end specialities can earn about 700-800K, while high end specialities like neurosurgery can earn up to 2M.

Consultants at government hospitals usually supplement their income with locum private practice where they take on part time jobs at private facilities (on paper, the government job is full time, but in reality, it's more of a part time job (Nigerian civil servant attitude) so they tend to have ample time for private practice even while practising at government hospitals). Extra earnings here also depend on specialty. Surgeons tend to earn more than physicians, since they can charge per procedure. These extra earnings can range from 300K-2M monthly.

Consultant owned private practices earn depending on the specialty. Orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons would very very easily net well over 2M monthly, out-earning a rheumatology focused practice for example. These figures are for single specialty private practices which are quite rare. In reality, most practices offer several other specialities in addition to that of the owner, by hiring other specialists on locum basis when the need arises.

Thank you so much for taking time to actually answer the question asked and contributing to the discussion.

One person went on and on and on abusing everyone before attempting to namedrop some big specialist hospital as if they're the average hospital in the 36states on Nigeria!

Government hospitals in the North are generally cheaper than the south.

Imagine a patient who just had a brain surgery and might require an extensive ICU care .
And that's a government hospital oo

CS sef doesn't cost 150k in UCH , how much more disc replacement grin grin

I admit that Healthcare is cheaper in the north. But the figures I'm seeing here for government hospitals are just figments of peoples imagination. I know because I've worked in and around several teaching hospitals in the country

Well, I put it to you that you are wrong. I paid, not that I am telling you of someone else's story. Facility fee is what goes to the hospital, consultancy fee to the specialist. Paid to the doctor via cash or bank transfer or through the hospitals pos machine to be remitted to the doc for consultancy.
