Capitalbase: I know this question wasn’t directed to me, but since I understand how biological sciences PhD work, I’d reply. Very few schools ( I was going to say No school that funds their PhD students but I don’t want to generalize) admits students into their PhD for spring. Biological sciences PhDs are very competitive, I would argue that they are more competitive than CS PhDs which usually admits less than 5% of their applicants. For fall 2023, Most if not all programs have Dec 1st as the deadline. Some have November deadlines. Most students for fall 2023 have been admitted, rejected, waitlisted or interviewed/selected for interviews already. Knowing this, I would recommend your friend takes this time to research and shortlist schools. Check their requirements, get a credential evaluation if required as US Unis don’t know what a first class is! They are only interested in your GPA, get research experience and have recommenders sorted out against fall 2024. I also encourage him/her to apply to a minimum of 10 schools. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Kiddyong123ayo: I understand how you feel but if I was a VO, I would definitely reject your visa application. How old are you? When did you graduate secondary school? Do you have any study gaps? Can you explain them? Why are you just going to school now? Why a community college and not a university? Why would you spend so much to attend a lowly ranked community college that no one wants to go to when you can attend the best universities in Nigeria at a fraction of the cost? Your entire application screams “ desperate “ and “intending immigrant that doesn’t want to attend school but needs a loop hole to enter the US”. I would argue, that you’re aren’t a genuine student. 14 Likes |

Capitalbase: If you're looking for an ivy league kind of school, Cornell has a robust and beautiful biomed program (PhD). However, if you want to have like a 90% chance of being admitted quickly, R1 universities are your bet. R1 universities are second to ivy league and there are only just eight ivy league in the US. Texas tech university is good and they offer admit to lot of Nigerians. I remembered they once admit me for spring but didn't go. Fall admit for their PhD biomed is still much available. CreativeWeb: PhD isn't as competitive as masters, in term of getting funded and scholarship, Msc is the most difficult. Also, avoid schools that make it compulsory to select a"would -be " PI before they can review your app. It's an okay thing to do contact a professor but that's a long route as most of them won't even respond their email. PhD programs do lab rotation and you're expected to attend a seminar class in your First year where faculty members will present their research and lab every week. This will guide you to choose a PI. Having a PI take you in with his funding is cool, but I will mostly advise people to apply to schools first for the majority of their applications. Although, talking to a professor will help you, if he replies anyways 3 Likes |

Nostradamus1: LoL. If a student leave a Lab for reasons, it's only okay for the professor to find a replacement, so schools can roll out spring admit even at this time. They expect you to depend on luck to get visa and it's okay if such candidate don't get it. Schools don't lose |

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by CreativeWeb(m): 12:04pm On Dec 16, 2022 |
Rdfactor: I don't understand you at all. PhD is more competitive and hard to get in. I'm not talking about funding. Most PhD has automatic funding. Some schools will not give you favourable admission decision if you had no prior discussion with someone in the faculty. In some cases, if they don't reply you, then, probably they don't want you or you sent it at the wrong time (like summer vacation). 3 Likes |
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Dreamsss: 1:35pm On Dec 16, 2022 |
@Creativeweb. Well, I kind of get where two of you are coming from. Plenty, if not most PhD candidates, get to the middle of their program and run away because they land a job...fact. A lot of people are not as enthused over spending four to five years ontop studying, when they could be making cool dollars and PhD is usually a backup plan, when you can't find a job as per lots of Masters graduates that I know... Then on your part, yes, it is true that lots of schools will hint at the fact that your admission decision would rely on if you can have a line of communication with a faculty member, so you can be sure of a right fit, according to them...So that's why it could be hard to get in, because profs have their own for body and would not respond... So I don't know if that can be entirely referred to as competitive. |

chibertha: It's so strange and sad how people can comfortably bilk someone trying to make a headway in life. Maybe he's a professor, so what? As you hear America, so the next thing is to kill the person? So sad really. When I asked my own lecturer for the sake of just adding one academic recommender, as my way to say thank you, I offered to send recharge card and before I said jack, he was sending account number. I just laughed, say na you know and still went ahead to send the 5k that I originally wanted to send. He did not acknowledge and me, I did not say nada. Didn't think I needed to. After that, I still inboxed him to goan do supplemental application, by way of 'extending the good he has started"..lol. He wasted time..so I went and dropped another message and I was like; I would not know if you have completed the recommendation because my right is waived, but I want to let you know that I'm grateful. Only him waited for two weeks and went to complete it. If not that we're trying to do things properly sef, I know someone with a gmail-owning recommender..and he get full funding ontop am. |

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Dreamsss: 2:23pm On Dec 16, 2022 |
Sisib15: Not to worry. Such people always have their comeuppances. Some times that we apply to plenty schools sef, the very first application, might end up being the favourable or/and earliest decision. Just make sure you meet their requirements and avoid all those schools that outrightly give mumu connotations like; meeting requirement is not a complete assurance for acceptance kinda BS. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Rdfactor(m): 4:50pm On Dec 16, 2022 |
CreativeWeb: Why are you disagreeing with things so obvious. PhD without funding is like bicycle without wheel. Doing a PhD is like a job too. You get a teaching or research assistant which waive most of your tuition plus a stipend and you offer to teach a general lab in return. So most schools will rather take a 10 PhD for a term rather than taking a master student who'll only spend two years in a Lab. PhD is a decent return on investment for them as it is for you. Hence, some schools will not fund a Ms program for some reasons. That year, I applied to so many PhD program and one Ms program. I was accepted in all of the PhD program with funding but rejected in the Ms program cus of no funding. Same school that rejected me for Ms told me if I switch to PhD they'll fund me. Same stories for all of my friends. And in my cohort right now, none of us had a PI before we get in. In fact, some people don't even know it's a thing to contact potential supervisor but I do know. Just that contacting a professor is not necessary except if the department say so, and you can always dump them and apply somewhere else Schools know international students don't want the Msc route. Who want to spend 6yrs doing a PhD where a msc of 2yrs will land you a decent job in the US.? That's part of the reason they fund PhD to encourage you to apply. If you want Msc, you'll need to spend your money because they know you want juicy jobs and that's fine. 10* easier to get into a PhD than Ms and I'm saying that because I know 3 Likes 1 Share |
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Rdfactor(m): 4:55pm On Dec 16, 2022 |
Dreamsss: Exactly. Most people enter with PhD (cus it's easier to get in with funding) and then master out after two years. For some people, 6yrs is a long journey and they'll rather swine it making money rather than spend such years in a Lab making $1500 |

Capitalbase: LoL. Paying for app fee for program is a lot. Except you don't have app fee waiver, then you can pay. There are ways to get waiver; - contact the graduate coordinator of your department. You don't have to tell him you Don't earn enough in your country to pay. Something as simple as "I write to know if the department often provide app fee waiver for prospective graduate applications" will do. They'll tell you if they can help you pay because it's the graduate schools that request for these fees. And some department often set budgets apart to pay these fees on behalf of people who can't pay. If the department say they don't have such budget, contact the graduate school. They'll direct you to register for their graduate open house or some virtual meeting like that. Once you attend on the said date, they'll waive it. And if they can't waive, then you can pay if you're sure you have necessary credentials to give yourself a chance Also, if you're a first class graduate. You can apply to the OFP program in Nigeria. I don't know if anyone knows this. OFP helps you till you get to the US. They pay your GRE, TOEFL, PASSPORT, app fee, flight ticket and all that... 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Good day, bright minds! I would need your thoughts and guidance regarding my question below: I have a family member who intends to pursue a master's degree in the USA or Canada, but she strongly prefers the United States. Summary of her profile: • Married with two kids ( Both kids are US citizens) • She worked as Air Hostess with one of the major international Airline but got out of job when the pandemic hit. • She had her first degree in actuarial science and graduated in 2011. • She had her Master's in Finance in the UK (University of Leeds), graduated in 2013, and then joined the Airline. • She is not currently working and presently resides in Lagos. What's your thought on how she can navigate US Immigration interview when she applies for an F1 Visa? I need your view regarding whether to apply alone or with her two kids ( both kids are still in the infantry, nine months old and 4 yrs). What courses do you think she can go for apart from Accounting? She does not like Accounting. Finally, is there anything you think she should note, do or be aware of before presenting herself for an F1 immigration interview? She is 33 yrs today. I don't know much about how US immigration works, so looking forward to what you think. |

olasubomy: Please, good people, help him with these questions pls. I will say she should apply for a PhD. She could get funding and the VO will not think she wants to Japa cos she already has a Master, not even from Nigeria, from the University of Leeds, that's something. So, applying for another masters may be a red flag. About kids, I am a novice too. I will leave that to more experienced people here. |
