Switching From Chemistry To Chemical Engineering by Lexiskillz09: 10:44pm On Dec 11, 2022 |
Good evening guys. I'm sorry for the long story. But it's serious Please Please I need ur opinions on this issue bothering me. I am a Industrial chemistry graduate. I graduated last year and just completed my NYSC. I want to go for postgraduate studies but I am having difficulties in making a decision on what to do. Someone advised me to switch to Chemical engineering, (this will require a 1 year postgraduate diploma course) though I wouldn't mind if there's a guarantee I stand a very good chance in the labour market after the PGD and MSC. On the other hand, 2 bros in my area I respect so much discouraged me about switching. Both of them were of the opinion that it would rather keep me confused instead of helping me. That recruiters will consider a candidate with B.Eng Chemical engineering without a masters over me, while chemistry field will consider a chemistry msc holder over me also. Bottom line, it's almost a waste of time especially here in Nigeria that I should just do msc in industrial chemistry. I'm still young though. I Will be 22 on 27th of this month. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Lexiskillz09: Do not do it. I repeat, do not do it if your goal is to stand a good chance of getting a job. Switch from Chemistry to Health Sciences instead. Your background in Chemistry should give you a foundation for Health Sciences. You are already familiar with chemical composition, you can easily understand drugs. For you to have graduated Chemistry, you must have drawn so many molecular diagrams, therefore, you will be able to handle diagrams in Health Sciences. Chemical Engineering is a different thing entirely. If you had studied Chemical Engineering, your mindset will be different from a Chemistry graduate. Where you would have been applying to work by now will be different. Your approach to the job market will be different. You cannot switch now. You will just be a black sheep lost in the crowd. Pick Health Sciences instead. 98 Likes 2 Shares |

I so much like that course, Ehemical Engineering, but graduate when priorities student unionism There's no course that guarantee job in the labour market, however Chemical Engineering is a very lucrative course 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Chemistry, chemical engineering what is the difference? Chemistry engineering. I don't know much about the chemical engineering course but the only person I know who did that course is currently a teacher. 29 Likes 1 Share |

Majoring in chemistry in Nigeria (in most places in the world) is such a waste of time as it's such a niche market. I'll advise you switch into engineering as it's has a much better job prospects. Other USA and China, there are not many places with enough job market for chemist. 2 Likes |

Lexiskillz09: With your good knowledge of chemistry (plus physics), write Jamb again and fill Medicine and Surgery. Choose a school like Niger Delta University, Bayesla State. You are very young. You will thank me after 6 years time. I did the same thing too 40 Likes 5 Shares |

The person who advised you to not switch to chemical Engineering is right. Why do you even want to switch to do a PGD in Chemical Engineering? Is it that you have seen so many job opportunities that require Chemical Engineering graduates and not Chemistry graduates? I guess it's not the case. It is better to stick with your Chemistry if you want to study further, especially if you are to remain in Nigeria. Even if you wish to travel out to study, there are [arguably] more funding and scholarship opportunities for Chemistry grduates than Chemical Engineering graduates. So my advice is that you don't switch. Chemistry is a fantastic course! 19 Likes 1 Share |

Lexiskillz09: Stay in the chemistry lane, if traveling abroad is something you’d consider in the future, usually the US may deny you a visa based on the switch, I think they prefer you build up on what you studied at undergraduate level but this is just to get in oh, when you’re in you can do anything else. 2 Likes |

Lexiskillz09: Go for Engineering but if you have the option of doing Chemical Eng. , Kindly ask if you can go for Production Eng. and if you can, choose Production instead. Someone also suggested Health sciences which is a very good option. 1 Like |
