•Inflation pushes eight million Nigerians into poverty in 2020, 2021 The World Bank says it will take northern states 40 years to catch up with their southern counterparts considering the “current growth rates”. The report highlights the sharp gap between per capita levels of northern and southern states, saying, “the poverty rate is almost 20 times higher in Sokoto — the state with the highest poverty rate, at 87.7 per cent— compared to Lagos—the state with the lowest poverty rate, at 4.5 per cent” while quoting 2018/2019 data. It notes that it will take the country about a decade to get back to per capita income level recorded pre-2014, that is, before the oil price shock that triggered the 2016 recession. https://guardian.ng/business-services/itll-take-north-40-years-to-catch-up-with-south-says-world-bank/ |

omonnakoda: Dubai is made up of 80% foreigners who do most of the work. Locals prefer running Souks, the Government, camel farms, pearl diving/fishing etc. it was a strategic leadership move In Saudi Arabia the young Crown Prince MBS is pushing modernity against the grain of opposition of the wahabis and co Even northern nigeria is backward mostly because of the leadership. The UK had consulates in Kaduan and Kano. You could go camping in Sambisa forest or Birnin Gwari, the emirs allocated lands for church building etc |

The problem of the north is cultural and so should be regarded as their very personal problems. A people that have willfully criminalized education should have themselves to blame. They internationally created a situation where they have the highest female illiteracy rate in the whole wide world! Empty arrogance! The whole country can not be held back while we wait for a people who prefer cave existence to catch up! They prefer a life of base existence, let them have it to their full! My only problem is that when they refuse modern education and can't produce enough of the doctors and engineers and pharmacists they need, they now rely on their control of the government at the center to will such scarce resources to their end, through dubious contracts and government postings paid for with resources from other areas of the country! That should be a no no! My attitude to this is very basic: when certain societies criminalize formal education with all the vehemence that they can muster as is the case in most parts of the northern villages, the government should NEVER go forward to subsidize their patented idiocy by providing them with such services that come from the good results of formal education! Let folks marinate in the results of their decisions. Let them stew in their own juice! So if you don't want your kids to go to school to become doctors for instance, when you're sick and bedridden, we should look for the best koranic student to treat you! If koranic doctor grew a beard, much better! When your community badly needs that bridge to connect to the next community, we should employ the services of the best Alfa in town, together with the best koran recitation winner to come and drop some incantations so that a holy bridge will emerge! It's that simple really... 5 Likes |

Just imagine level Biafra would have been by now in terms of science, technology and innovation, if they had succeed in seceding from this contraption in the 60ths.. BIAFRA and Dubai would have been dragging rank by now, if we had succeed in seceding from this contraption.. Just take a look at what they achieved within 3yrs of being outside Nigeria.... We are being held down in this contraption, we need to break free of her . 1 Like

mignone: It's a political statement designed by the world Bank to keep the North as the focus point of development. Poverty and Islam are siamese twins in subsaharan Africa since history began because of its inherent highest birth rate and violence bloodshed of Jihads across the world. World Bank won't be bold enough to state this fact to the ears of northern elites. No. But would rather be shouting blue murder to the South. To me, the North is Cursed with its brand of wahabi Sunni Islam of violence and four wives per man syndromes. 3 Likes |

Sometimes I wonder what's developed in the south. The south does not have pipe-borne water, standard health care facilities or functional local councils. There's no difference between the North and South. We're all suffering the effect of corruption and mismanagement of PDAPC. Well, unless you're into extreme sports and you like dick-measuring contests, I don't see the need to compare whose shit hole is better. Let's come together and vote them out. Vote for Peter Obi and Labour Party. 2 Likes |

Deh play. The south is building universities, new access roads, creating new industries and blazing the trail across all fronts while the north hopes to catch up by putting people like Shettima in power. Catch up can only work if the south were slowing down, which is nearly impossible. The front horse leads the pack, they say. Meanwhile when you mean south, they should specify which south. Not where they are doing sit-at-home everyday and burning people who are bringing essentials to their region. South East and north will soon be in the same Whatsapp group very soon. The unequality will equate each other soon. Let Soludo keep taxing Anambrans to death. |

Is anyone surprised by this revelation that, to me, errs heavily on the side of optimism? Personally I feel the North is 70 years behind the South. This is a region, from leaders to followers, that is over-religious and shuns education, modernity, progress, science and tech, equality of gender, etc, etc. Everything backwards, the North wantonly and sadistically embraces. When an entire region, starting with Atiku through to the Buhari-led FG declaring "no going back on grazing route, can oppose a ban of retrogressive open grazing of Cattle then you know the rest of us are in trouble. SW leaders moved to ban open grazing to enhance security and create modern ranching, as proposed by Tinubu, that will aid illiterate and vagrant herders transform into educated, rich and successful employers of Labour capable of creating wealth and employment for the North as a multiplier effect. Yet the North still vehemently railed against what they will benefit from the most because of a lack of progressive and modern mindset. We are literally fcked if we don't work out how to ensure the retrogressive conditions that Northerners seem to enjoy does not sink us all. The issue of Northerners love of backwardness, they want the rest to us to share with them, Is one we must address sooner rather Tha later. 1 Like |

Realist12:Feeding the south how? PLease explain how the North "feeds" the south What has high inflation got to do with who is feeding who? High inflation indicates a higher demand for goods and services and a higher supply of money to pay for them? |
Re: It Will Take Northern Nigeria 40 Years To Catch Up With The South by Realist12: 2:08pm On Dec 19, 2022 |
omonnakoda: So if you factor in the cost of logistics of moving agricultural items to the south don't you think inflation will rise where as the north grows what we eat . That's why inflation will always be higher in the South if you're being honest. |
Re: It Will Take Northern Nigeria 40 Years To Catch Up With The South by omonnakoda: 2:17pm On Dec 19, 2022 |
Realist12:So I am being dishonest? Can you leave out the childish sentimentality? Is agricultural produce the only thing affected by inflation? What about Petroleum products and other imported items . What about the services component of the economy?.Is everything a good that is moved around on the back of a truck? What of those few items that we still manufacture in Nigeria ? Specifically in Lagos and Ogun State First your divide of North and South is artificial as far as inflation goes. There are 19 states in the North. Each with its own peculiarities Before you make your statement you must have data. What is the inflation figure you have that you are using to compare North and south, exactly? Again HOW IS THE NORTH FEEDING THE SOUTH? |
Re: It Will Take Northern Nigeria 40 Years To Catch Up With The South by Realist12: 3:00pm On Dec 19, 2022 |
omonnakoda:Y'all keep asking questions waiting for data to back up your claim when simple logic and even data backs it up . Even nairaland has exposed the disparity in prices of food items. Whatever we manufacture in the south will be affected by inflation going up north too . But the question is are they dependent on them I.e refined products like we are dependent on agricultural produces here . |
Re: It Will Take Northern Nigeria 40 Years To Catch Up With The South by omonnakoda: 3:19pm On Dec 19, 2022 |
Realist12:You are all over the place with too many assumptions First you say north is feeding Nigeria but fail to define North? Next you are droning on about inflation Without data how can we compare? Data is very important You cannot pretend that in Nigeria as far as inflation is concerned there is North and South and nothing in the middle The North is very vast. It is not the entire north that produces food. Food also moves INSIDE the north from Benue to Zamfara from Plateau to Kwara and so on Do they produce Yam in Sokoto or Borno? What about plantain Cassava, Ugwu , Palm oil Benue is closer to Aba than Kebbi so if there is inflation in Yam price e.g according to your theory they will feel it more in Kano than Enugu. Benue is closer to Port Harcourt than Kano 1 Like |
