How will you ask a final year English student these types of questions?

An average JSS 1 student will answer the last question without any doubt.

In English as a subject, registers are terminologies associated with a particular field of endeavour or profession. Eg, in aviation, you have words like; air crew, cockpit, runways etc. I knew this as a JSS 2 student.
yes the questions and cheap and ridiculous for that level.however it's not as terrible as they are sensationalizing it.all these ancient professors with their outdated Knowledge always get some abnormal high From the mass failure of students even though I understand too that many of these modern day students too are not serious and are mentally lazy

Is this primary English or university exam? No job... No job, yet they're graduating unemployable people.

What on earth does he mean by "what is register"?

Register can be a verb or a noun. Without an article we'd have no idea which is meant.

What is a register?
What is the register?
Or what does it mean to register?

Ah bros no fall hand na. Pls live up to your moniker o.

Register was a commonly taught topic since our Common entrance (Primary 5 Ugo-C- Ugo) days.

Register as used here, is obviously a noun, so the question ought to have been, "what is a register?" or what are "registers" or what is the concept of register.

My point is, the question is written wrongly.

I left university 17 years ago where I studied Electrical Engineering but even without any preparations, I can comfortably pass the exam.

This is where we all fail. Please what's the course outline. Hopefully, this is not part of the outline. Nigerians love to twist questions unnecessarily. We fail most times cos we were asked what was not thought. I hope we get further investigation and clarification on this. Exam nor suppose hard as we think am. Most prof are mad in nigeria cos of this sin

Meanwhile during my masters in the USA, the exams questions were even simpler than this. It was usually either fill in the blank or, objectives or short essays of no more than 150 words or a simple oral exam or a class presentation or writing a short paper (as exam) or open book exam( yes, you heard me right, open your book and copy to you hearst content) or the'd take class participation and attendance and grade you based on that.
In all, I learned more than I would have learned in Naija. We did the bulk of the work during the semester ( They will stress you with weekly readings, presentations, papers etc) and then they'd give you a simple exam in the end. It will also shock you that Thesis ( Long Essay) is not required for graduation in most Masters and Bachelors programs.

In contrast in Naija, a lecturer will even tell us at the beginning of the semester that no one will get an "A" in his course.

No be by exam; if it is by exam, it is easy to "cram and pour." The emphasis should be on holistic human development -critcal thinking, innovation, independent thought, relating theory to real life experience etc. not what you can regurgitate in a three hour exam.

Please don't post stuff like this online for public viewing. It will have a negative impact on our people who are planning to further their studies abroad. The outside world will look down on our credentials even though we might be better educated than them.
