They are buying it cheap from CBN ,then instead of settling their customers international transactions ...they are selling to their friends for profit these bankers should be lined up and shot !! for sabotaging our country very corrupt ppl

Yeah, I'm sure this is one of the principle reasons the naira is so high. Until the government gets serious about cracking down on Arbitrage, why would anyone who gets forex from CBN, not turn around and sell it on the black market. That's about a ~N300 profit per dollar for doing nothing.

When a country does not have any tangible thing it exports, even the crude oil is not refined, instead use 800 billion to repaint the currency, and expect the dollar not to be on the high side, lazy, incompetent, greedy and selfish politicians.

Guaranty Trust Bank has announced that its naira cards will no longer be used for international transactions starting December 31, Reports.

This means customers using the GTBank mastercard can no longer use their naira debit cards to pay for transactions originated in foreign currency.

Nigerian Banks had in March reduced their monthly international spending limit on naira cards citing “current market realities on foreign exchange.”

The banks gradually reduced their monthly international spending limit on naira cards from $100/$120 to $50/$20.

In September, several banks suspended international transactions on naira cards. GTB announced its decision on Thursday.

Read Their Statement On The Email Inbox As Obtained By Below:

“Dear Customer, we write to inform you that you will no longer be able to use your Naira Mastercard for international online and POS transactions effective 31st December 2022. Kindly note that you can use your GTBank dollar card for all your international spending requirements,” the bank said in an emailed memo.

“According to the bank, the dollar card allows ATM Withdrawal of $1,000 daily or the equivalent in the transaction’s local currency. It added that with the dollar card, there is no limit to international PoS or online transactions. There will also be no annual spending limit,” it said.

Nigeria has suffered an importation-fuelled foreign exchange crisis for years, but the scarcity worsened in 2021 with its export proceeds declining amid increaed supply for foreign exchange. The dollar exchanges for naira at about 440 a dollar at the official market and N740 a dollar at the parallel market.

As of December 28, Nigeria’s foreign reserve fell to $37billion, compared to $37.1 billion recorded as of November 28.

Its actually available but u must first have a dom acct with them after which it would be processed.

Which one is "you must first have a Dom acct"? Was dollar master card going to operate on its own without being linked to an account? Gtbank dollar mastercard isn't available at gtbank branches

But how come GTB was still offering international transactions via Mastercard months after other banks stopped? I had no idea GTB was still allowing it. Are there other banks still allowing international transactions on their cards? I don't mean dollar card o.

Not sure about the end of your logic. If the supply of dollars comes from the same place and people are forced to buy at the BM rate instead of the lower rates from their cards, less people will probably buy dollars. If less people buy dollars, there will be downward pressure on the exchange rate.

The policy sux, but maybe the most equitable solution. People who have the ability to do international transactions shouldn't be able to get those dollars when others can't at that rate.

That’s another point though.

But most people that buy dollars buy it because they really need it for online purchases. People don’t just buy dollars for fun. So most of those people will be forced to go to black market increasing the demand for dollars

Even the so called dollar master card isn't available in any gtbank office

Gtb dollar prepaid card is available in all branches and can be given to you instantly upon request. Normal usd ATM cards are requested from HQ and usually takes about 7 working days to get to branch.

I hear you. Another consideration is I assume when some people get to the black market and realize their purchase will be ~2x the cost, they'll rethink that purchase.

All Nigeria banks are thieves and rogues. They get dollars from CBN at official rate of #450.00 or thereabout. When you ask them to sell dollar for you to fund domicillary account, they will decline and tell you they don't sell. They will now pack the dollars give their agents ( aboki exchanger ) and direct you to go and buy from them at an unofficial rate of #700 + per dollar. It will never be well with those bankers, and those that are making life miserable for common people

big fool dollar is scarce but it is surplus at the aboki joint, if you need million dollars you can get at it very easy at the aboki joint. Where does the aboki get his dollar from, na 20 dollar wey people dey manage. In fact when the dollar limit was 1k dolls it wasn't as scarce as this. What is the volume of trade by the 20 dollar users. There are as much verve card owners as visa and master card. Out of the international card owners only a few percentage of them even use it for international transactions, besides people only buy stuff that are not produced locally, infact if no be say you dey craze why you go dey mention Bluetooth, your father dey produce Bluetooth? All the products people buy from outside are actually produce and imported too, plus what item can $20 get you mumu.
