A Lagos prince told me something similar decades back. Seems to corroborate oral and written history. Though I have not heard the Awori part from Oba Akiolu say it.

Fact we know what Oba Akiolu believes. It doesn't sit well with the Yoruba narrative and they do not hide their hate.

I will seek to know the Awori part.

But yet, the Idejos (Aromire and brothers) did not agree, their term was made clear that: for Ashipa to be an Oba Isale Eleko on the land given to the Benin, their ownership must not pass the of land and space given to them by Aromire as garrisson/base at Iga-Iduganran, that the land, water and fishes on Isale Eko belong to Aromire, they'd also take the 70% of Chieftaincy and the tax collections taken by the Oba in Isale Eko must be shared among the Oba and the Idejos, with other portion taken to Benin. This agreement was not settled for many years, until the death of Ashipa. Late his son Ado, was installed with the agreement of ownership and Obaship.


The fall of Oba Eleko from BENIN Lineage to IJESHA Lineage: The Oba Ado, Gabaro, Akinsemonyin and Eletu Kekere were the last Oba that was connected to Oba Bini. The kind of system of Obaship title of Benin is quite different to other Obaship title, mostly among Yoruba kingdoms. The Benin system use the first child to be in line to the throne, while the Yoruba system uses the system of all princes are entitled, taken the princes name to Ifa (Oracle), Ifa trim them down to, then the other princes vote.

This is the case of Eletu Kekere who did not have a child during his 5 years reign as Oba Eleko. "EKO" means "Farm" in Awori dialect. Regular/General Yoruba dialect call it "OKO". Just like "Eba-Odan", general Yoruba call it "Ibadan", so Eko, Oko, Iko, r'Eko, Egbe, all these they are Yoruba language with different subgroups of dialect, referring to "Farm".
