Moscow said its New Year attacks on Ukraine targeted the country's drone production, claiming it had managed to scupper Kyiv's "terror attacks" against Russia.

Russia's defence ministry said a strike hit "the facilities of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine" which is involved in the production of drones, and that the "plans of the Kyiv regime to carry out terrorist attacks against Russia in the near future have been thwarted."

Russian attack will 'slow by March as it runs low on ammunition'
Russian troops are depleting their stocks of artillery ammunition at a faster rate than expected, and they will not be able to keep up the current pace of attack, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

President Vladimir Putin's forces are experiencing significant issues with artillery shells that will worsen by March this year, the think tank said in a report published yesterday.

While forces had previously used 60,000 artillery shells per day, they now only use 19,000 to 20,000 shells.

Russian forces have removed all artillery ammunition from Belarusian military warehouses to use in the attack on Ukraine, it states, but will not be able to carry out intensified attacks for much longer without back up.

The Telegraph has not independently verified the report.

Macron promises to 'stand by Ukraine' until victory
France will 'unfailingly' support Ukraine until the end of the war, Emmanuel Macron, the French president, said in his New Year's speech.

Speaking in a televised address, he told Ukrainians that France and Europe will help to restore peace.

“We will be unfailingly at your side. We will help you until victory and we will be together to build a just and lasting peace. Count on France and count on Europe," he said.


Putin 'must be tried for war crimes' as soon as possible
Russian President Vladimir Putin is a "guilty man" and must be tried for war crimes as soon as possible, according to a British international prosecutor.

Sir Geoffrey Nice, who led the case against Slobodan Milosevic, the former president of Serbia, in the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), told Radio 4 that the case against Mr Putin "couldn't be clearer".

"It is crimes against humanity because civilian targets should never be bombed or otherwise attacked," he said. "There can be no doubt about the chain of command leading directly to Putin. These are his soldiers."

"At a minimum, he knows from the television what we all do about what's happening... but he's not brought them back to be tried for what are obvious crimes. He's a guilty man."

He said any trial "could be tomorrow morning, as far as I'm concerned" and should be done by Ukrainians in the Ukrainian language, adding that Mr Putin would not need to be present for a trial to take place.

Ukraine shoots down 45 drones overnight
Ukraine destroyed 45 drones overnight as Russia launched a large-scale attack on the country in a New Year's Eve assault.

Thirteen drones were shot down at the end of 2022 and another 32 in the new year, the country's air force said in a statement.

Ukrainian authorities did not say if some of the drones reached their targets.

Missile strikes rock Kyiv on New Year's Day
Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine continue to be targeted in Russian missile strikes today after Mr Putin intensified the attack on the regions on New Year’s Eve.
Ukraine's Air Force command said they had destroyed 45 Iranian-made Shahed drones of which 32 were fired after midnight.
Fragments from destroyed missiles caused minimal damage in the capital's centre. No casualties have been reported.
Ukraine’s forces said today that Russia had launched 31 missile and 12 air strikes across the country in the previous 24 hours.
Andrii Nebytov, chief of Kyiv's police, posted a photo on his Telegram messaging app, allegedly of a piece of drone used in the attack on the capital with a hand-written sign on it in Russian saying "Happy New Year".
Attacks on Saturday killed at least one person in Kyiv and injured a dozen.

Putin and Zelensky take aim at Russian citizens in New Year speeches
Russian president Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky used the New Year to call for Russian citizens to back their war campaigns.

Mr Putin was surrounded by troops as he delivered a stern address in which he told Russians to rally behind the country’s troops as he pledged victory over Ukraine.

Mr Putin talked combatively about 2022 as the year that "clearly separated courage and heroism from betrayal and cowardice."

"The main thing is the fate of Russia," Mr Putin said. "Defence of the fatherland is our sacred duty to our ancestors and descendants. Moral, historical righteousness is on our side."

Reiterating that the West is supposedly intent on "destroying Russia" by using Kyiv, Putin vowed he will never allow that. He signalled once again, that the war, albeit hard, will continue.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke directly to the people of Russia saying that their leader is destroying their country. Mr Zelensky said the Russian president was hiding behind his troops, not leading them.

He said: "This year has struck our hearts. We've cried out all the tears. We've shouted all the prayers.

"We fight and will continue to fight. For the sake of the key word: 'victory'."
