The story of afonja long but he's one of most powerful Yoruba warrior back then, he has one Fulani as a friend back then and that his Fulani friend convince afonja to train his tribe soldier with his experience,so! Afonja abandoned his Yoruba warrior and put all his efforts to train Fulani which they later betrayed him by causing problem in Ilorin and overpowered yorubas that own the land,Yoruba hate afonja for that act of betrayal because they know if not for him those Fulani can't defeat them... That's why Fulani rules most of Ilorin till today and instead of having obas they have emir... so they used afonja here as all yorubas

Wow , is this story for real ?... if this story is true , then it’s insensitive of other tribes to refer to yorubas in such terms ..
But wait O!!.. the emirs in illorin, are they Yoruba speaking or fulfulde?

Afonja is a person name, according to history he collaborate with some Northerners to betrayed his own brothers. And later on northerners betrayed him too. That is why Ilorin has emir not an OBA , so in nairaland anytime someone referred you as Afonja it means you are decendance of AFONJA a betrayal
