Anikulapo’ tops most watched movies on Netflix Naija 2022

Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’ has emerged as the most-watched movie on Netflix in Nigeria in 2022.

According to streaming data provider, the 2022 Nigerian epic fantasy film took first place, beating out major worldwide releases like “RRR” and “Adam Project”.

This is a significant achievement for the Nigerian movie given that other films were released in March while the Nigerian film was released later in the year.

The Netflix original received excellent reviews upon its release, and within a few weeks it had amassed 8,730,000 global views, making it the most watched non-English movie ever.

The statistics shows that 2022 was a terrific year for Nollywood because the Nigerian audience saw a lot of our homegrown content with only four foreign films released.

Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan (born 30 September 1975) is a Nigerian actor, producer and director. He is widely credited for elevating the quality of Nollywood movies though larger budgets, shooting on 35mm, releasing in cinemas, and improving cliché Nollywood storylines.

After starting his film career as an actor in the 1999 political drama Saworoide, Afoloayan made his directorial debut in 2006 with Irapada, a Nigerian supernatural thriller, which won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Film in an African Language. His follow-on directing credits include The Figurine, Phone Swap, October 1, and Citation.

October 1 was the winner of 16 major African movie awards in 2015 and the second highest grossing Nigerian film in Nigerian cinemas at the time of its release, a feat Afolayan was to repeat two years later with The CEO.

In 2021, the director signed a three-picture deal with Netflix.Swallow, the screen adaption of Sefi Atta's book of the same name was the first to be released in October 2021, followed by Aníkúlápó, an epic Nigerian fantasy released in September 2022.

Afolayan has described the work as a "Game of Thrones recreated in Nigeria but with a better representation of our culture”. Eleven days after its release, it was the #1 most-watched non-English Netflix original film.

Anikulapo: Detailed Review
Anikulapo (2022) movie review
Anikulapo has a very simple storyline, with a simpler subplot that allows for fantastic acting and cinematography. It is time to tell our own stories, and I daresay Kunle Afolayan is a master in doing this. The movie weaves mythical elements into a story of love, betrayal, scheming, and the lives of our ancestors.

The chemistry between Kunle Remi and Bimbo Ademoye is a beauty to behold, and the way they both speak Yoruba with the right accent is very impressive. Bimbo is such a great actress that all she needs to express something is to open her eyes; her body language is fantastic on the screen.
Kunle Remi’s first foray into Yoruba movies is good for his acting profile and it shows he is a versatile actor. Baba Ifayemi Elebuibon is a true living legend whose knowledge of history needs to be captured for future generations, and it is beautiful to see him here.

Kunle Afolayan’s tribute and respect for the legends of the Yoruba movie industry is apparent in this movie. He puts everyone in the right roles and they all play to their strengths, forming a beautiful synergy of acting that evokes nostalgia. This must be the largest gathering of extras for a Yoruba movie that I have ever seen, and it gives the true feeling of what the villages must have been like then, a true portrayal of the village life.

Casting the king of Ojumo as a non-speaking king is a stroke of genius by Kunle Afolayan. This took away the need for the actor to learn Yoruba or murder the language, and it also built a cloud of mystery around him.

The movie does not try to take modernize the issues in the story. It portrays polygamy in its true light, both in a palace, and a regular household, women giving their men preference, and all the other challenges of such a living arrangement.

The makeup, props, and costumes in this movie are top notch and unrivaled. it is a Master course in film making. Anikulapo is one of the best portrayals of Yoruba mythical stories. It is told in a simple way, in the class of Hollywood telling mythical stories from other lands.

NollyRated Score: 5/5 (Outstanding Movie)

NollyRated uses a 5-level scoring system, as follows:

The film was a class act.

Very proud that a Nigerian movie top the views and was the highest grossing non-English film.

The Yoruba language was also used to really great effect in the film.

Kudos to Kunle Afolayan and Co.

The feem try...

Even though I am yet to understand how the lead character wasn't recognized when he was invited to and went back to the same village people that almost beat him to death and left him for dead....

He himself didn't appear to recognize the same king that ordered his murder just a short imwhile ago, neither did the King recognise him who he had ordered his murder earlier.. Everyone just carried on as if they were seeing each other for the 1st time grin

Na dia I remove the feem, put blue feem cool

This guy is one of the greatest film producers to come out of Africa. His obsession with perfection is scary and that makes him churn out classics back to back.

Really proud of this Nigerian.

Kudos to him.

A very stupid and overhyped movie. Jst good graphics but overstretched characters/storylines.
Even this other movie sef elesin oba, very stupid movie, jst an overhyped gilbrish. How could a son who jst arrived from London after many years (medical doctor) killed himself for a stupid old flirt of an abobaku jst because of one stupid tradition.. Doesn't make any sense.
If you really know movies, you'll give it up for
