DontBullshitMe: Theres a difference between cheap labor and refusing to pay your workers your agreed wages. It is this mindset that you have and people like you that allow these Lebanese, Chinese and the likes to take advantage of our people. The country is currently on cheap labor anyways but we need laws to at least protect employees from employers that still want to take advantage of their workforce because theres no solid labor laws to use against them. Look at most state govt that are owing several months of salaries, most of them are not even paying the minimum wage yet are still owing several months of salary. Please what do you call that? 4 Likes |

larride: I’m surprised he’s saying for Nigeria to become industrially competitive, labour will still have to be exploited far more than they are experiencing presently. Imagine! People are not getting paid for job done and someone is suggesting things still need to get worse before we become industrially competitive . It’s actually head-scratching . Is it until people start dropping dead for being unable to afford food , medical bills , etc ? |

larride:I deeply sympathise with your situation and I hope that you get a divine break soon enough. But the truth has to be said. Nigeria, a struggling, poor, underdeveloped, overpopulated country cannot afford to enact strong labour laws, no matter how painful and depressing it sounds. Strong labour laws will scare off entrepreneurs who are willing to take huge financial risks setting up businesses and factories. Apart from the discouragement it will instill into entrepreneurs, it will also kill the little industries we have because Nigerians are very indisciplined, undutiful, and too entitled. Bring strong labour laws into this country (which is impossible by the way) and watch how the little factories and industries will pack up before six months. Then, you have worsened unemployment rate and the cheap products you buy in the market disappear. Also, you talk about Lebanese and Chinese and it sounds so embarrassing. Those guys are the real life savers of Nigeria's economy. They take huge financial risks setting up factories and producing very cheap items to the Nigerian market. Remember that they have no safety net, many of them have started industries that eventually resulted into huge financial loss, nobody cares. Look at all Nigerian big men, they always go for the low risk sector like Petrol stations, hotels etc. Lebanese and Chinese will set up a high risk factory, employing thousands and producing cheap products. Yet you still dislike them. Abeg. The country is overpopulated, the only competitive advantage we have is our cheap and exploitable labour. If Nigerians didn't want this, they should have kept their population around 40-50m so the oil money can go round like the Arab countries. ![]() ![]() 11 Likes 3 Shares |

DontBullshitMe:How does capitalism equate to not paying your workers their due at the end of the month? ![]() In fact, a business failing to meet its obligations to its workers at the end of each month should be a big red flag for any potential investor. These Lebanese and Chinese guys that you're praising for exploiting those working under them, won't do the same to workers in their country, and that's why they come to places like Nigeria where our government would allow them to get away with it. 1 Like |

BlueRayDick: Please don't ever refer to Inibehe Effiong as an upcoming activist. Dude might just be 34 years old but he's fought state governments and government ministries to a standstill several times and won. Won high-profile cases and he's been Sowore's party, AAC, head of legal since 2019. Larride, do message Inibehe Effiong on Facebook and detail your travails to him. If he doesn't respond quickly (he tries his best to respond but he's very popular and gets lots of those), message his partner at his chambers, Augustine Asuquo who's more reserved. Inibehe is a protégé of Chief Falana and works with him on very high-profile cases. I used to have his number but I suppose I misplaced it and it'd have been easier that way. Sorry about your travails. 3 Likes 1 Share |

seankafor: I do not agree sha. There is a cost to these asian products. My guy bought a samsung tab because he is doing his masters and he wants to be able to read ebooks with no problems. The tab has 32gb memory, so we obviously had to buy an sd card. From DIRECT EXPERIENCE all those cheap team and Co sd cards will just fail abruptly on you. If you are lucky, they go into a read only state and you can get your files off them. If not oyo. Next the cable all these USB c cables are only good for charging and even then you may not get fast charge. Try to connect your device to a pc and you will not know what the problem is. This exact thing happened.we went to buy a cable and I told him most of those cables will not work. This is just one experience, but it is a repeating decimal in multiple facets of Nigerian life. Is there any tecno phone that has actually gotten an update to a new android build? I for one am not excited at the flooding of Nigeria with dangerous substandard goods at high prices. It makes everything a game of trial error and, chance My rant for today |

DontBullshitMe: I am shocked that you are celebrating Chinese /Lebanese /Indians There is a reason they are derisively called kora. They have no respect for workers rights, are offensive and abusive, and engage in unchecked sexual harassment. GloriousGbola:Asians builds goods according the the standard requested.. And you go for the product and standard that best fits your pocket.. So if our markets should be only standard quality products like Sammy and iphone, how about low class people who don't have money to afford such? Won't they buy their itel and Tecno and manage it like that? And again who uses SD card in this age and time? I stopped using that shit 3-4 years ago.. there is cloud storage now, there is HDD, SDD, flash drive ETC.. So one will hang his cloak where his hand reach |

DontBullshitMe: This is absolutely false and one of the many reasons workers in developing countries without strong labor laws continue to allow foreigners exploit their workers. This is where I blame the government because of its lack of oversight, institution and accountability. While there will never be an equitable balance between earned wage and capitalism, it doesn't excuse what is going in Nigeria. Modern societies are finding ways to provide that balance between capitalism and labor by providing consistent wage increases, career development and numerous employee benefits. The work environment in the 90's is no longer the same today, a lot has changed. I was speaking to a HR executive 2 weeks ago and she told me, Roland, HR is at it's most fluid state because of constant changes to labor laws that are now protecting employees. Owing workers salary for 20 months, withholding pension and benefits and the other nonsense happening in Nigeria is not exploitation, it is PURE WICKEDNESS and has nothing to do with capitalism, afterall, Nigeria practices a mixed economy. 2 Likes |

Roland17 I understand to a large extent what the other poster is saying with capitalism and profit maximization That's why many companies like Apple Google Microsoft Samsung etc the major beacon bearers for capitalism moved most of their production to China and Asia where they can exploit cheap sometimes underage labor and terrible working conditions that wouldn't stand scrutiny of any western nation If in Nigeria and other developing nations we have to abide by the western nation standards like environmental protection, standard working conditions , wages to match the west. Then our people won't be able to afford it Where I differ is you refusing to pay for work already done. That is fraud 3 Likes |

raumdeuter: We are not even talking about working conditions yet because if we do, we will not even finish this discussion. Like I said before, what you get in Nigeria is cheap labor when you compare our working conditions/salaries and other benefits with other top African countries not to talk of the western world. It's even the Nigerian companies (mostly start ups) that are incorporating standard work benefits into their employee benefits. Like you said, it is fraud to not pay people for work they have done. The State Govts owe salaries, pensions and gratuities without consequences, why wont private employers think they can get away with it. At least a decent labor law will ensure that people get paid for the work they have done. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Roland17(m): 6:42pm On Jan 16, 2023 |
raumdeuter: Roland17: Dayo, this why I made the embolden comment in my original post because I know capitalism and equity can never co-exist. However, that is not what is happening in Nigeria and that is why foreigners and even the government itself can get away with it. Cheap labor is inevitable but no be to dey owe family man salary of nearly one full calendar year! Using pensioners money to accrue interests from banks and the other nonsense that is happening. At least in China, Mexico and other countries with cheap labor and underage workers, they are getting paid and that is enough incentive to go back to work despite the working conditions. 1 Like |
