For every Dr that leaves there are at least 5 more unemployed to replace that person ask your hospital to recruit The only overworked consultant of a specialist unit in a Government GH left and instead of finding ways for temporary employment the clowns in management closed down the unit.Cos HMB did not employ for them Also ARD should take full responsibility for its role in perpetuating toxic work environment that makes no sane registrar decide to stay If u are arguing about any of this then you don't know jack about naija public medical community 1 Like |

Porpulace: Can a CORRUPT Nigeria avoid to pay 350k or more to every new Nigeria? NO! Do we need more doctors in Nigeria? YES! IF they want to learn here to go and practice abroad they should be charged more. There's is no other profession in Nigeria with shortage unless they don't want to employ people. The fair solution is : If you want a subsidised education you should be ready to serve the country If you don't want to serve the country you should be ready to pay to have the education, Datti's University in Abuja pays like 2-3M for their medicine - They should pay it too. I will try my last shot at medicine this year(Direct entry), if I scale through school and finishes uni, I will leave this country immediately. This is for my own benefit but this doesn't benefit the country as a whole. 1 Like |

About 5 years ago or even less, you had newly graduated doctors stay months or even up to one year, jumping from one hospital interview to the next, before getting a place to do their housemanship. This was the same for resident doctors. A hospital could call for an interview. Thousands of doctors would apply. Some even charged 5-10k application fee, for an unemployed medical doctor to buy form. At the end of the day, only 100 doctors or even less would be given appointment as residents. The rest would roam on to the next hospital that has an interview. Most hospitals employ every 2-3 years, meaning if you miss out that season, you have to wait till another 3 years or so. Most of them work in private hospitals in the meantime, hoping to get government employment as soon as possible. Many private hospitals are exploitative and pay pittance. We complained and cried about it, but it fell on deaf ears. Now they have seen health systems in other countries that will employ them ASAP, why do we turn around and condemn them? Many of them wanted to work for the Nigerian government. Unfortunately, they were technically first rejected by their fatherland. Some that had merit but no money to pay their way through failed to secure employment. Wouldn't you be frustrated too after spending 5-10 years post-NYSC trying to secure a residency training slot, to no avail? We can no longer complain. We only watch the unfolding drama. In the past one year or more, it's hard to count any federal teaching hospital that has organized a full scale interview for resident doctors. Most of their residents have gone. The tables have turned. They now resort to posting adverts on different WhatsApp groups asking interested doctors to come and resume work immediately. Some even now accept doctors without Primaries to start first, and write the exam later. Unfortunately, some lessons have still not been learnt. Even now, as we speak, there are doctors looking for employment in government hospitals who have to settle the Admin staff with hundreds of thousands of Naira before they get employment. Yes, in 2022. Don't ask who shares the money? Corruption is basically everywhere. We will not say further. 4 Likes |

yemmit90: Any nigerian graduate must practice in the country for at least 10 years before being allowed to seek employment elsewhere. Not only doctors. These types of comments just shows how myopic we are in thinking. So you decide to tie the doctors down and other graduates who also had " "subsidised" education are free to go. Well done sir. barbstee: Oga, not only did i not study for almost free, I even paid higher fees than the average 4 year student self. We had guaranteed accommodation, sure, but in return, we coughed out higher accommodation fee to the university. (Lol...the day one non-medical student found out how much I was paying in accommodation fee...e shock am!) Also, we had to buy our textbooks, buy our equipment, buy stuff. (Most of the textbooks in the libraries were out of date, even then we managed use some of them, and anatomy for example never changes) |

Federal Government in particular needs to let go of education at all levels. ALL federal universities should be handed over to the States where they are located. Prior to 1975, all universities were owned by the Regional governments. State government ownership would at least promote some COMPETITION to be the best. The same applies to airports and seaports too. I would prefer that all the Universities are privatized but I know Nigerians generally have a socialist mindset so they can't tolerate that idea even if it would have the best long term outcome. It's wrong for the Federal Government to subsidize the education of university graduates and then those graduates migrate to foreign countries and make use of their valuable skills in a way that robs Nigeria of the public benefit of the subsidy. The graduates are basically doing fraud on Nigeria. This is the exact same thing happening with fuel subsidies, the benefits go to the neighboring countries. The worst part is that the most valuable degrees in federal universities mostly go to the children of the rich and well connected. Again, similar to fuel subsidy, most of the benefits go to the rich and powerful. This is common sense and common sense isn't very popular in Nigeria, so the nonsense will continue. 1 Like 1 Share |

planetx: Sir, I know at least 4 Nigerians in the USA who started medical school at ages 40 to 50 years old. In fact one of them was a UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR before starting medical school. There's a lady nurse right here with me in Raleigh NC whose children are in university. Guess what? She just secured admission to a USA medical school. A medical degree in the USA is a ticket to mint money. It's even easier for someone who is ALREADY qualified as a medical doctor in Nigeria, your school fees are not an issue, the person basically got a degree for free in Nigeria that costs over $200K in the USA. Once they get to the USA and pass the exams, they start work as a resident earning over $50K, a salary they can't dream of in Nigeria. Yes USA medical residency is tough, but for a Nigerian immigrant doctor it's definitely worth it. 3 Likes |

planetx: Actually, in USA, no. I know a Nigerian medical doctor, even graduated from medical school in Nigeria, found her way to USA AFTER NYSC, (Her big sister works there, non-medical carreeer.)....and is now basically a consultant/attending...(I also know another one, but she went to medical school in the USA.) Also starting medical school late (I saw your early comment) is par the course in the USA. (i once met some americans a few years after i graduated...who were surprised that I was a doctor that young already. Had to explain to them the difference between med school USA and Nigeria ). 1 Like |

planetx: Yes indeed but the proper question is - what are the chances of not becoming a licensed and practicing doctor? That's the real question. What is the employment rate of doctors in Nigeria? What do they earn? Why are Medical Consultants in Nigeria migrating even to Saudi Arabia? These are the germane questions, most of the migrants have done the calculations and they know what is best for them. Actions carry bigger weight than arguments. And then again, being an uber driver or taxi or truck driver in the USA will likely generate a standard of living that is better than that of most doctors who've been practicing in Nigeria for less than 10 years. Especially for truck drivers, you can easily make $40 to 80K per year in the USA. The median FAMILY or HOUSEHOLD income in the USA is $65K. With that you can easily afford a good apartment with ALL basic amenities, something that junior doctors in Nigeria definitely can't always boast of. |
