I was just wondering what kind of frustration I am likely to encounter applying through France. Planning a family visit for September but I'm beginning to have a rethink based on your post. Thanks

justwise:

Try Portugal,, you are likely to get appointment quicker, Spanish or French embassy will frustrate you

You will need to get travel insurance, letter from your school, hotel booking confirmation and bank statement though i'm not sure if you need 3months or more bank statement

Of course, that's her target market. Those without right to work or those here as visitors.

When the report them to police for modern day slavery, exploitation etc and use their likes as a pathway to attain permanent residency, they will come online crying wolf and say their village people is against them.

With all the "wokeness" and "open eye" in the world today, I'm shocked that anyone will be looking to exploit people in such manner when just a simple phone call to the police or a walk to the police station from the "employee" can ruin the "employer"

I dont know where you driving at. I know people who have operated this for the past 10yrs. They usually get an employment solicitor to draft the agreement required. Its more or less like an Au-pair program which allows people legally earn below minimum wage. I would have posted the link but i dont want nairaland axe grin but below is a snapshot of what the average earning of aupairs look like - feel free to verify if you want. There are people who are actually looking for opportunities like this, may seem exploitative on the outside but this is certainly not the intent. Plus i really cannot afford a full time nanny hence i am going for this. THe only reason i am not going via an aupair agencies is because the earliest they say they could get someone was in May but i want someone quicker.

I understand where you are coming from since you are providing accommodation and feeding.
But will the person be able to cook and eat what they like and as much as they like - as they would if they are paying for thier own food?
Will they be able to use the accommodation as they would do in a shared accommodation?
Is there a guarantee that once the shift is over, the person is not obliged to lift a finger to help or assist you?
Will you pay their pension and NI?
How many days holiday are they entitled to?
Any sick pay?

My opinion: It is a very risky venture. If you find the wrong person, they can make false allegations against you to get a payout and the law will likely side with them because I suspect you will not tick all the legal boxes required to properly execute this. It may be better to get a family member over to help.

THanks so much, this is a very constructive feedback and hopefully other learn how to provide opinions in this manner too wink wink

Like i mentioned previously, i usually follow same path as i have seen people do which is using an employment solicitor. If the solicitor advises otherwise which i suspect might be due to brexit, then i ll pull off the plug.

One thing about UK i know is, always make sure you get the right guidiance and nothing is impossible! Thanks once again for the feedback. smiley smiley

@Geekseventplace. The honest advice is embark on #missionabort. The earlier the better.
You might not be aware, my style of writing is lengthy, opinionated and legalistic.
In your case, I wrote very brief.
Perhaps, I should let you know why.
The challenge I have, which is personal, is that I do not believe in the ọmọ ọọdọ̀ (house help) concept, whether in 9ja or 'saner clime'. Why? The probs is not having 'house help'. The probs, for me, is the attitude, the mindset. (Well, no wonder #BUGA was a hit song!!) Buga wọn init?

Reading through your #advert, as you've posted, I see and it is evidently clear to me that you were looking for the so called 9ja kind of house help. Not even a 'nanny'. For you, it's the ọmọ ọọdọ̀ of a thing.
You change of tact and trying to hide under the guise of Au Pair is that of someone that fits into ... ajá tó bá ma sọ nù, ko ni gbọ fere ọlọdẹ. Fade close.

Now, are there Au-Pair. Yep, there is. Are there people abusing the Au-Pair concept/program. Yes, there are. Why. Cheap labour by the 'host family', disguised immigration by the Au-Pair. As they say, two ge two. Both achieve their aim. Ko ba hakaba. A bi kín nsọ ni Ibadan tia tia.

Be it as it may, is it something you can do. Yes, possible. There are legal way to circumspect. Is it something you should do. Like I said in my earlier post, heck no.

In-btw, rather than refer you to well known and established Au-Pair, I'll use the same link: Au-Pair world to engage you.
For a moment, close your mind to the typical (I dare say the nonsensical) ọmọ ọọdọ̀ of a thing as practice in 9ja and some other places. Now with an open mind, read the expectation of an Au-Pair and the requirement of a host family.

You as a host family
- You have at least one child under 18 living in your household. ✅✔️
- You can provide your au pair with a separate room. ❔❓
- Your au pair should help with childcare and with light housework. ❔❓
- You speak English in your daily lives. ❔❓ (Truly, if 9ja Au-Pair, will you?)
- You have a different nationality than your au pair. ❔❓
- You give freedom for the Au-Pair to experience their world as a youngster ❔❓

Your Au-Pair (on the other hand)
- You are between 18 and 30 years old. ❔❓ You indicated below 50
- You are not married and have no children. ❔✔️ Possible what you desire
- You have a good knowledge of English and would like to improve your skills. ❔❓ Not really of interest to you
- You are entitled to apply for a visa. ❔❓❌🚫 You seek 'immigrants'!
- You are, depending on the visa, able to pay 244 - 516 GBP for the visa application. ❔❓ Doesn't seem of interest to you
- You can afford the travel costs. ❔❓ Not the profile you sought.
- You have enough money to support yourself without help from public funds, at least 1.890 GBP. ❔❓ Not the profile you sought. You want a dependent on you, at your mercy
- You desire exploring ❔❓ Doesn't seem of interest to you

So our dear @Geekseventplace, if what you truly desire is a live-in Nanny and you have urgent need, link: Indeed can assist you. . While at it, out of many options, link: Child Care can be assistive.

PS: As I iterate to people, 9ja probs is not even so much of President, (unaccountable) Governor ,and (career) politicians. The bulk is 'us'. What was that Obey song ... ẹyin ariṣe ninu madaru, ẹ jẹ lọ dawọ. Probs is, that ain't happening. Why, people enjoy and enrich in the chaos/mess
#Ireeo

PS: It might be you're analysing from a good intention mindset. However, the typical 9ja #mentality of ọmọ ọọdọ̀ doesn't cut it.
geekseventplace:
The total package is surely above minimum wage and i will explain.
As a full time nanny (7-days a week), maxiumum you can work is 8hrs/day and with minumum wage of 10£/hr gives you 2400£/month before tax and 1900£ after taxes. Accomodation & all utilities averagely 900£, feeding,Wifi Internet/mobile and other household expenses is averagely 600£. Hence if i pay extra 400£, i am matching the minimum wage already. Mind you, i didnt include cost of transportation, etc that would be saved when working a full time nanny.

@ the bolded - which is why you are looking for someone desperate enough
Employment solicitor indeed- for an individual without the right to work in the UK? Cos clearly no one who has employment options will take up your "generous offer" of £300 pocket money in exchange for the joys of unlimited babysitting and house work

The below is from gov.uk - I highly doubt you can legally hire a Nigerian nanny under this scheme as you claim. Why not expand your eligibility criteria and try a real au pair from the EU (Poland for example) - or that's not the type of ọmọ ọọdọ̀ (in semmyk's voice) you want? lipsrsealed

Hiring an au pair
You can hire an au pair if they:

are from the UK or Ireland
are from an EU country and have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or are eligible to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme
have a Youth Mobility Scheme visa
If none of these apply, you need to check the au pair’s visa conditions for their right to work before hiring them.

You must not hire an au pair if they’re here on a visitor visa or visiting the UK for 6 months or less.

If the au pair does not already have a visa, tell them to check if they need a UK visa.

@ the emboldened, I promise you that jobs are not scarce at all in the UK for anyone to want to legally earn below minimum wage. Except you want a mad man or woman to babysit your babies.

As said by many, you know exactly what you're looking for. So, please stop trying to wrap it nicely. We've established that you cannot afford paying minimum wage, which is fine. However, I hope your finances improve to be able to afford it otherwise, you may be toeing a dangerous line and all these hypothetic explanations won't save you should problems arise.

As a parent, I wouldn't pay someone £400/month to look after my children.....how will one even have peace of mind.

Please don't fall into the hands of paedophiles that would jump at such opportunity to be housed, fed and granted free access to victims.

You may think that you're smart and the one taking advantage of the nanny, not knowing you and your children are the real victims.

But hope you know that back then, most of the Au pairs came from other parts of Europe - Eastern Europe especially and most were not legally documented hence it went unnoticed and more especially with UK still in the EU then. Don't do something that would make you Ekweremadu's neighbour oo cheesy

If you ever heard of the Au pair program, you will understand better that this isnt exploitation. Its Ok to say what you want to say based on your level of knowledge grin

i am open to listening to constructive feedback if you can justify with a superior analysis vs what i have done.
Note; This advert is not for folks with masters or bachelor’s degree who can find a better paying job for themselves.

Au pairs do not work 7 days a week neither do they work full time. The expectation is that they work and study (learn English). I had au pairs and mine worked a max of 30 hours a week for me and then worked at a bar all weekend. There are no nannies that work 7 days a week either. Haba!

https://www.gov.uk/au-pairs-employment-law/au-pair

Plus standard working hours is 37 hours and anything over, you'd need to pay overtime plus sign an opt out clause. At this rate, we fit see you for front page of Daily Fail soon.

You should engage them and nicely ask for sponsorship, what do you have to lose? There can always be exceptions and it might just be you.

Never accept things at face value and always push for more. I learnt this many years back when I got my masters admission, I wrote a letter requesting for a discount in the fees which they surprisingly gave me! About 40% discount too. I didn't have the whole sum then, which is why I wrote to them, however that incident taught me a lesson. Now even of I have the money, I'll ask for discount still, if I get a great offer, I negotiate still...what is the worst that can happen?

Not really, the UK is a pro at bouncing back. The current issues are not new - Thatcher had far more union strikes to contend with in her time, many complaining about the same issues of today.
Brits have been migrating to Australia, Europe, US for years.
Many Brits alive can still remember when the country went through rations on food and energy
So while we are going through a rough patch at the moment, we've bounced back before and will do so again smiley

I think you should discuss this with them. I've read of some students getting full time jobs with NHS but temporarily restricted to 20 hrs until when they can do full time. At other times they get sponsored at the end of their studies based on performance.

Just discuss this with your hiring manager and see what s/he says or suggest.
