I've tried upwork and fiverr but its already over saturated with designers.

I actually started as an intern but the startup collapse due to lack of funds.

I failed at Upwork (when it was still known as Elance)

To succeed at those platforms, you need to do some almost unethical stuff. It's really tough.

Won't lie, this current tech job market is harsh on product people, especially starters. Been searching for junior product designer roles for a friend's brother but I only see internships. I will advise people working in product design to build a portfolio and chase freelancing. My younger brother is a UI/UX designer with many years of experience and he currently freelances (mostly because he dislikes company work)

I plan on learning UI/UX design this year. Which is the easiest route? Enrolling in a physical ICT training center or Are there any free means of learning online? If yes, please share.

Welcome.

Theres this guy on Twitter that you can attend his class, hes very good. He teach UX engineering. You can also learn low code tools like web flow and bubble from him. Joseph Brendan. You can search for him, he also has a lot of tutorial videos on YouTube. I think hes the founder of dev and design (Not sure). He started a product design class this monday.

But personally, I will recommend you go to a physical class. I attended UnivelCity, its located at Yaba. Their 3 month product class is 300k.

The best route is getting mentored by Senior Product Designers. The main problem though is, the best ones are rarely interested in mentoring anyone. UI/UX design is a really rigorous field (as opposed to what many people think) because there are so many principles to learn.

You have to understand how to find the perfect balance between aesthetics, psychological reinforcement, and business decisions.

Learn graphic design first. Photoshop first. Then use Canva to replicate graphics and UI later.
It'd be easier for you to phase into Figma for UI/UX after you've learnt graphics and replicating UI. Adobe XD should be secondary.

Clients and employers ask for PS, Figma and Canva proficiency.

Well, that's the path I took and I'm self-taught with YouTube videos and replicating UIs to learn quickly.

Enjoy UI and you'd naturally want to get into frontend development.
