The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a 10-day extension of the deadline for the use of old naira notes across Nigeria.

The CBN governor, who spoke to journalists Sunday morning, said he had the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari for the extension.

The new deadline is now 10 February instead of the former 31 January deadline, he said.

Mr Emefiele spoke in Daura, Katsina State, after a meeting with the president who is in his home state for official duties.

Mr Emefiele said Nigerians, who are yet to change their naira notes from the old to new ones, now have an opportunity to do so.

He said people must utilize the opportunity because the deadline will not be extended again.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the CBN last October introduced redesigned 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes and gave a deadline of 31st January for the use of the old notes.

However, the new notes have been scarce, thus leading to calls for an extension.

Mr Emefiele did not elaborate on what the central bank was doing to resolve the scarcity of the new notes.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has finally extended the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes by 10 days.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, said the new deadline is February 10, 2023.

I hope it's true o! I'm still trying to see the sense in plunging millions of people into losses because you don't want politicians to bribe voters and you want to impose silly cashless policy. When you don't want to be unfortunate.

BestMan001:
Must they extend it?
Why shouldn't they? If banks that were supposed to be the main means through which the old notes should be phased out were still paying with the same old notes as at last week?

For those that usually say my prophecy doesn't come to pass, can you now see that this one has come to pass. I Prophesy that the date would be shifted beyond 31st January, and it has happened. I hope I'm now vindicated that I'm not a fake Prophet.

This is the prophecy below.

FalseProphet1:
The date of submitting old notes would be extended by not more than 2 weeks. If it exceeds election, then the purpose of printing it becomes useless. And greedy politicians who were planning to buy votes would succeed in doing so.

This I have seen.

Buhari's has no ball. Common sense suppose tell him he's to give 6 months notice ahead for the new notes to be in full circulation. If he did the policy in order to curb politicians, then it has failed with the extension.
I just don't like a man that pretends to be good but is very bad!
At the end, people ll hate APC more cos the common man has nothing more to go and change in the bank.
The looters has 10 more days to loot/exchange old notes. So...I disagree with the president on this extension. If I m in his shoes, I would v implemented this policy since early last year and give 6 months maximum notice with eagles eyes to watch who's exchanging huge cash. I go catch lots of people and ask where they saw huge cash to exchange.

As expected.

Nigerians are last-minute people.

Any deadline not extended will result in irreparable losses.

It's quite unfortunate. Some people even take pride in this shameful behaviour.

Do not compel a population of over 200million people to deposit their Old cash within a short notice. It will most definitely end in chaos. Na wa for Bubu reasoning fa

I saw this coming. If not for this extension, the coming week would be very chaotic. The FG may not be able to handle the fallout. The policy is really hurting Buhari's rep particularly in the North at the moment, which was why Atiku tried to ride on it some days ago.

Emefiele have dined with and have mastered how to deal with Nigeria politicians.

At least he has shifted ground a bit.

There will no longer be a valid reason to put all the blame on CBN with this 10 days extension.

Cashless policy is the way forward
