If Ghana can provide steady electricity and its citizens afford to pay, I disagree with the notion that Nigerians wont be able to afford it, Ghanians are even paying VAT on top.

All these figures quoted by discos as subsidy are just paddy paddy payments to connected people; Let everyone get prepaid meter - and let the bloody thing pay for it self? What exactly are we paying subsidy for? New Generation or New Transmission? Improved availability?
Let the government charge prevailing market rates for the power its asset are generating...

Ghana has a tariff system in place that ensures the poorest pay the least for their meagre consumption, just like in the west business rates are higher than residential, in some places even between residential your usage patterns could afford you a cheaper tariff, no be rocket science naa.
I agree with this, first thing is to get every single house connected to a pre-paid meter and usage gets monitored digitally and physically to guide against theft. There are so many homes (especially these face-me-I-face-you apartments) where they skirt supply and pay only a fraction of what they're using. In fact, I know of one where they pay 5K for the compound and there's up to like 8 apartments in the compound.

What will make electricity affordable and accessible to Nigerians is massive industrialization where the industries will subsidize the cost of electricity.
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Theflint1(m): 4:55pm On Feb 06, 2023
This will come naturally once everyone gets moved to pre-paid, those that refuse to have definitely have money to waste and they won't be cheating the system in the process

Bro, the average Nigerian has leaves home at ungodly 4am and doesnt get back home until 10pm... His usage is very minimal and Bro at 0.30cent using the Aussie rate his monthly payment would be way less than even 50k per month.
Now when we talk about the middle class where you and me fall into, I calculated how much I spent on diesel in 2weeks if not for family reasons I would reconsider my decision to not stay in a hotel
You mean average Lagosian cheesy

This is literally what was exposed last week in the UK as energy suppliers are breaking into customer homes and force installing pre-paid meters.

British Gas routinely sends debt collectors to break into customers’ homes and force-fit pay-as-you-go meters, even when they are known to have extreme vulnerabilities, a Times investigation can reveal.

An undercover reporter worked for Arvato, a company used by British Gas to pursue debts, amid rocketing energy prices and more customers falling behind with their bills.

The reporter accompanied debt agents in below-freezing conditions as they worked with a locksmith to break into the home of a single father of three young children and switch it to a prepayment meter. If families with these gas meters cannot afford to top up, their heating is cut off.

On another occasion agents were sent by British Gas with a court warrant to force-fit a meter at the home of a young mother with a four-week-old baby. Her bills have risen sevenfold during the cost of living crisis.

This is the end game of this your suggestion. Thankfully since the news came out, the Government has stepped in to request a halt...but this is where we're going, and trust me, you do not want to be going there.

How did you work this out?

Maybe you haven't read my previous post. 1 trillion naira worth of power was distributed to 10 million registered consumers, and the shortfall in payment was 400 billion naira.

That's 400 billion naira that wasn't paid to FG to pay the GenCos. That's 400 billion that FG had to find from somewhere to pay the GenCos

If they can collect N600 billion from 10million registered consumers, am sure with removing the ineffiences they can collect the shortfall from these consumers...
Am sorry I am unable to accept any figures from these guys, na dem create crazy bills naa. This is another gimmick where they use the masses to fleece the govt, whilst these poor masses are not even connected to the national grid, or no transformer.

Let people who use the electricity pay market rate, lets wait to see if all those Lekki big men stealing electricity would go out to protest.

Many Nigerians would pay the market rate for steady Electricity, most households are indirectly paying close to this on fuel/diesel. It will force them to cut their usage, like Gloriousgbola alluded - cos most places I have been, stuffs are turned on even when not in use.

Got back from Naija few weeks ago, was buying Diesel 50L for N40k every 2nd day... in addition to servicing and noise, paying N150K per month for steady electricity would be a bargain. Also some estates in Naija pay more than these monthly to get some semblance of steady supply.

For who will 150K per month on electricity be a bargain

The average Nigerian does not live in Lekki, Rather they liv in Ilesha, Arochukwu and Potiskum

Shey the salary of a secondary school pricipal which is a senior level staff even reach 150K a month

For you to afford 150K a month comfortably, your monthly income needs to be around 600k because you will have to pay other bills and utilities, feeding etc

You are talking about the top top of the line people. Less than 1% of Nigerians have 2 cars in their household never mind 4 to 5

When you think about these things, Don't think of Lekki, Rather think of Iperu Remo, Ugheilli and Katsina Ala

Nigeria needs to study how countries like Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, who are the most electrified countries in Africa, can achieve 24-hour power supply.

Even common Gabon down there has more stable power supply than Nigeria, who has the largest economy in Africa.

It's more practical for Nigeria to emulate the models of these African countries than the UK model, which is not so relevant to the discussion.

It's not in everything that blacks must copy the whites.

I don't even buy all this subsidy talk. Get rid of corruption and make the taxation system more efficient and watch Nigeria solve most of its problems.

Nigerian politicians, who steal trillions of naira yearly, make the country poor.

No country on Earth can prosper and make progress with this level of looting.

Then the national assembly members are arguably the highest paid in the world.

These are great financial obligations that weigh heavily on the country.

Subsidy shouldn't be the major focus of the discussion.

The current energy crisis in the UK is artificial and results from the crisis in Ukraine. You posted an electricity bill of about 1K pounds in Winter when energy use naturally is at its peak, add the Ukraine thing and it's clear why it's risen as much as it has. Also, your energy bill is for a 5-bedroom apartment, won't be wrong if I said you are an above-average electricity user yea?

Nigeria does not have as much demand for energy compared to countries that experience winter, that's something you should factor in the assumptions you're making.

Lol, e clear say baba na their Otedola gang e dey. I spend on average 30K per month (pre-paid + fuel) before this whole fuel madness for a two-bedroom apartment in Lagos.

How big is your house bro?

I live in a 5 bed house which is similarly sized to the typical Nigerian duplex and this is how much I was paying before winter cold kicked in. We try to be quite prudent in our electricity use, but still the energy prices are murdering me right now.

In Naira terms, that's too uncomfortably close to a million naira in monthly expenditure on my Nepa bill.
I think you having a family and UK being cold is a factor plus the house uses gas to heat water thankfully

I turn my heater just 30mons during winters as it gets uncomfortable hot grin

I tried to ensure most Appliances don’t consume electricity…. I acknowledge with family, you can’t control much

From Afrodoc2’s reaction, I don’t think he pays that much per month….. Damm the UK

Bro, Nigeria is there already naa... No be today NEPA dey cut wire with their crazy bills. Nigeria is ripe for this switch, plus we no get winter.

Na wetin poor man wan use electricity do? Our people are already in darkness, they are already paying to charge their phones at some roadside shop & the ones who can are already spending alot to generate their own electricity - these lots will pay.

If we have a similar lifeline tariff like Ghana, most of our poorest will be covered, cos dem no get PS5 and Microwave or AC naa.

Shebi I talk am.

CBN has succeeded in making innocent bankers who are going about their job despite the restrictions placed on them

Now na to begin attack bank workers in the street but as long as Tinubu is the target everything is okay

Emaprince:
Sorry about that bro.

I really don't know why people dont see CBN as the problem.

CBN are doing everything to paint banks as the bad guys to exonerate themselves. They keep posting videos of banks busted for not loading ATMs with the meagre new notes given to them. CBN should be ashamed of themselves cos if anything, those videos exposed how economical they are with their disbursement of the new notes among banks.

The money I see in all those videos put together won't be enough for a single branch to serve its customers.

Their aim is cashless policy..so they should do well to come out open and tell the public that the policy means there won't be any cash availlable..and stop giving us false news about how they have given money to banks but the later refused to pay customers.

People should face CBN

The CBN on one hand, the banks on another hand but my problem now is with us the people.

One of the very first lessons I learnt as an adult was that, fighting and jagidi jagan( can't translate this) does not solve every issue. Sometimes you just have to be diplomatic and be wise.

Now that they have ambushed the poor people working in the bank, the bank has closed. The small money they would have even collected they can't collect. Those with dispense errors, lost ATMs and a plethora of other issues that would have been resolved today have been denied that opportunity.

Everybody now don go house or have spent extra transport money to visit another branch.

Who is now at the losing end?

With these conversation I wonder why people are not moving en masse to solar

Waiting for NEPA or electricity to be stable is likely never going to happen since I was a kid NEPA has been like this and showing no signs of changing

If I own a house in any Nigerian city, One of my first expense is to install solar and give the middle finger to NEPA

At this point all banks need to close. They dont need to wait for one employee to be lynched before they act. If the CBN cannot provide enough cash, they shouldnt put lives of innocent staffs at risk

Banks are usually high security place, how long before hoodlums and non state actors take over and break into the bank vaults

Let the CBN that is claiming that they have enough go ahead and distribute it, Maybe Emefiele can bring his family members to the frontlines to distribute money and not put inncent lives at risk

There is no assumption on it.. ....My previous ghetto...an estimated bills if 20 to 30k comes pet month even without seeing reasonable electricity..

You just have to pay to avoid unnecessary shalaye...

People complains cos they are forced to pay for unused services.

My point is....your projected tariff can be reshaped with discipline..

You will not expect someone with 250k monthly pay to equip is home with a high consuming gadgets/appliances.... ...

No one on 600k can afford electricity of 150k monthly except he's single.

600k a month is not exactly a lot of money in Nigeria of today. If this was 2018, I'll say yes but not 2023.

Solar ain't that cheap either, most don't pay for themselves until say like 5 years, not sure how the battery is supposed to last beyond five years too. I checked the quotation for a 3.5KW + 700W setup with 12 solar panels and it came to about 2.8M.

To install solar the right way for you to completely go off grid also costs a lot of money.

Another issue I have with solar is that it's just unnecessary attention. I live in a rented apartment. I can't afford to put solar on the roof and give everyone passing on the street the impression there's one big man living there

Living a low key life is still one of the best ways to avoid kidnapping in this town. Though that has now reduced thanks to bunkery but you can't throw caution to the wind.

How much it generates depend on the power of the batteries and inverter

I did for my folks and I think it was over 2M I cant remember the details but they needed some solar panel, batteries, inverter.

They have electricity 24-7 but for security reasons don't turn on their surround lights cos its risky for your house to have visible lights when your neighbors don't
