With these conversation I wonder why people are not moving en masse to solar

Waiting for NEPA or electricity to be stable is likely never going to happen since I was a kid NEPA has been like this and showing no signs of changing

If I own a house in any Nigerian city, One of my first expense is to install solar and give the middle finger to NEPA
True - best way to go... however unfortunately for some people who already built bought pretty expensive gens spending another 5million for solar especially if they are not based in Naija, is not a quick decision. Also you might require some rewiring, changing of some aplliances.

We did this 2years ago as 70th birthday gift for an Aunt, cost was around 1.5m for 3bedroom house powers all light fittings ( energy efficient bulbs) pumps borehole and water treatment machine, 1 newly purchased energy efficent Fridge Freezer, All 2 LED tvs and offcourse fans.

Downside - No AC, but ofcourse old lady never uses the AC.

Solar ain't that cheap either, most don't pay for themselves until say like 5 years, not sure how the battery is supposed to last beyond five years too. I checked the quotation for a 3.5KW + 700W setup with 12 solar panels and it came to about 2.8M.

if you have a house of your own, then it will pay for itself because by the time you add NEPA and diesel fees plus the inconvenience

If chief Olowu is spending 150K a month on electricity, then that is 1.8M a year before generator maintenance which dem fit open shop on your head if you have a major breakdown

I'm assuming AC, pressing iron, microwave are no-goes on inverter?

It depends on the inverter/battery capacity. Depending on the size of the house you might need a higher capacity or doubling or tripling it

bro, if solar was that easy to maintain.. believe me, you don't know better than Nigeria who struggles everyday for power

In my former apartment, it was solar wired.. first 6 months we were enjoying solar and steady light..

The 8th months the battery ran down.. they have been calling different technicians to fix it all to no avail.. they bought another brand new battery.. still they couldn't fix it..

There is a reason solar isn't that rampant here.. not that we can't afford it.. the maintenance is another war on its own

Add kettle and electric heater

Also the batteries are finite. And subject to imitation horror stories.

How much it generates depend on the power of the batteries and inverter

I did for my folks and I think it was over 2M I cant remember the details but they needed some solar panel, batteries, inverter.

They have electricity 24-7 but for security reasons don't turn on their surround lights cos its risky for your house to have visible lights when your neighbors don't
thingskke this can attract police and efcc to your doorstep

Could it be that there was too much load on the battery which I suspect the average Nigerian would have done or some people are now doing fake inferior products

Also are you sure multiple tenants were not running iron, fridge at the same time?

The technology gets watered down to 'help' those who can't afford the standard.

When I first started using inverters (not solar power) the first three expensive inverters I got were pure sine wave and each had issues within a month. getting them fixed was a waste of time. Then I hit the mercury 2kva modified sine wave. A very very simple and rugged inverter. Barebones and it got the job done. But batteries were still an issue.

I was at felicity Solars office last week. The place is full of equipment being serviced. Not sure if it is quality assurance or end user abuse.

You know Nigerians once they see free stuffs.. they tend to abuse it

Someone will know it's solar that is running.. he will on fredge, ac and other appliances.. my very good friend and neighbor was culprit to this..

even the developed countries don't go solar..

Solar is not what you think it is

It's very much expensive and troublesome
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m): 6:01pm On Feb 06, 2023
Everything is tied to power though. Everything.

Nigeria currently generates her highest revenue from the ICT sector. The potential to generate more from thd sector is stifled by the power issues. Techies and tech firms have to pay exorbitantly for power to stay afloat.

Power also affects the cost of high-speed internet for ISPs. Techies and tech firms need high-speed internet to stay afloat.

India's GDP from ICT alone is almost half of Nigeria's total GDP. Last December, India increased its power production to 410 GW while Nigeria is struggling with 5- 7 GW.

When I researched, because of steady power, the ICT industry is on the rise in India since it powers the sector and makes cheaper internet available due to lowered cost of production by ISPs.
And consequently, clients trust an Indian to complete a gig on time while Tunde or Edidiong can't guarantee that because of power issues. To do so, he has to pay exorbitantly for power and high-speed internet. Amir in India would do so for a cheaper rate - he gets the light and internet cheaper and consistently.

If we fix power, our ICT sector would generate more than 6 times what it does. And that's more money for Nigeria.

These politicians don't get it.

That's why its better when you own it alone and not share the usage with others.
Solar is the way to go if you can get authentic materials because imagine how much dem dey sell fuel nowadays

And I believe this will be the new normal, Jagaban don talk say if he enter prepare to protest nothing will stop him from removing subsidy. No matter how long you protest

https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cn3u9n-DkEG/?igshid=MDM4ZDc5MmU=

By that time, it will be harder and more expensive to install solar plus many inferior materials will flood the market

Have you thought of sourcing these solar things from Europe directly to guarantee quality. China products quality might be somehow and US you might have to deal with KV conversion

You are speaking like a capitalist now which I love

Anything left to govt to run, will end up being useless. Look at refinery every govt is doing Turn around maintenance, look at Ajaokuta every govt dey open office for their head, look at NEPA etc now look at NITEL, Some of the younger ones dont even know there used to be a comany called NITEL

I remember Nitel cards, to make calls you will resume at NITEL office/booth by 6am and contrast it to what we have today with privatization

The problem with Power generation is that I heard that when you generate you still have to send to the national grid to distribute in their inefficient manner
You recover meat from dog come give to cat for safekeeping
So back to square 1.

I was at felicity Solar because we were looking to partner with them on a project. They seem to have a large presence in Nigeria. The first thing that came out of our convo - all those fancy solar farms are insanely expensive and not viable. Nigerias market is domestic.

It can be done at cheaper rates by not depending fully on gas it supplementing it with gas.

Nigeria is blessed with diverse water ways.

Paraguay produces 100% of its power through hydroelectricity (dams etc) and even sells to other countries; Norway's is almost 100%.

Kainji Dam project is deliberately frustrated. I've been following the electricity deregulation for a few years now. This year, the FG gave states the go-ahead to produce, transmit and distribute power.

Governorship candidates and Governors have largely ignored the issue.

Only Lagos and Akwa Ibom were really preparing and making plans ahead. Others don't care.

If you want to deploy solar power as an alternative in a facility you need to do it from the get go. From your building design you will have a system that will immediately shut down if any high power loads are connected to it.

Otherwise you will find that even so called educated Nigerians are little better than maiguard abokis.

In mtn offices they changed all the socket outlets for ups to German schuko becaue staff were connecting stuff like kettles on the ups socket. In my old head office a security guard connected an iron to a ups socket, fking up a 1.5 million naira ups and shutting down the oracle server.

Unless you are pirating your TV shows , you may still wind up paying more.

You netflix plus your starlink. And because everyone is now streaming, maybe also amazon. So now what is your TOTAL COST of entertainment?

I always consider this with games too.

If you don't have a data plan with a free browsing period, you have to calculate the true cost of your game - purchase of the game plus data cost. If it is a game like marvels avengers which for some reason every update is 8 to 10gb, your true cost of the game is way up there

A dam is actually no longer in favor as an energy source. First there are ecological issues, but more importantly, you are now at the mercy of anyone upstream of your dam. Nigerians complain that we send power to Niger. Well that is part of an agreement. Otherwise they can dam the river upstream and we are instantly fked.
