Thuram did not play CB until Blanc retired and Sagnol joined the scene. It wasn't his versatility that saved him since France used him purely as a RB from 1994 to about 2002. The reason he made it was that he was by far their best RB from 1996 to 2002 while Ngotty had legendary CBs in front of him.

The move to CB was later in his career and only served to prolong his career but even if he had stopped playing as a RB in 2002 he would still have been a legend of the game.

They pressed us so we'll, especially in midfield, and they were always compact when defending, closing passing lanes and making it difficult to pass the ball in the final third. They are a disciplined team with good organisation. We only scored from two mistakes that they made.
