Parenting is not easy, there is no sure answer for every situation. However, I am a parent and not my Child’s friend during their formative years and will not be until they earn it after their late adolescent-teenage years. Most parents of today try to be friends with their children, consequently empowering children and disempowering parents. From a behavioral standpoint, any behavior your child, particularly toddlers exhibit outside has been enabled or developed from home. The behavior of the child is not strange to the parents, they know that. A child’s immediate environment is the most influential factor in shaping a child’s mind. I tell young fathers, do not allow yourself to be seen as the disciplinarian amongst the parents. You remember when we were kids and your mom would say “I will report you to your dad”? Both parents should discipline a child appropriately. Children will be children, they will do stupid things but there has to be consistency in parenting and development of positive traits. 10 Likes 4 Shares |

raumdeuter: One of our former neighbours while growing up was a teacher. She had a student in the government school she teaches then who was handed over to her by the parents cos the child was exhibiting truancy ; as a teenager she would close from school and would branch boyfriend side. The girl was also stealing from her parents as well. Our neighbour took hold of the girl and once they close from school, the girl is expected to bring her (our neighbour's) bags and books home. When the woman comes she will site her to read her books, do her assignments and give her exercise to practise. In the course of this, the girl would join the woman's kids in the kitchen to prepare evening food for the whole hoslusehold after which she will eat and then head to her parent's house. When the girl crosses the lean, the gets caned and when her parents report anything bad about her our neighbor was always there to use the rod to set her straight. Long story short, the lady gained admission to the university, made good grades and got a good job. She made our neighbor the chairperson of her wedding and had good words to say about her impact in her life and how she made her a better person by counselling, caning and other disciplinary actions she took. She could've ended up being a teenage mum if she wasn't set straight by the woman back then. 5 Likes |

Itsrm: At that point of destruction of TV I believe I will physically restrain him even if it involves beating Children test boundaries and once they know The child that threw that tantrum outside has been getting away with it at home for long. My mom used to have a saying "omo oju" - Children where you only need to look at and they adjust immediately. They know what looks mean Omo oro - Children you need to talk to or scold verbally before they adjust Omo igi - Children you have to use cane for before they adjust You have to know which one the child is. Some if you use harsh words on them they cry for hours while some if you like use words, take away things or even beat them, they are on the way to the next mischief. And after a while they learn to dust it I've heard Children boast to their friends that they can do stuff and get away with it. They always test boundaries All options should be on the table and they are aware even if you don't willingly use it 4 Likes 1 Share |

raumdeuter: Right there! At that point, his own safety is even compromised because he can get hurt. You absolutely have to physically restrain the child if you choose not to beat the child. It is not a show of strength but at that point you have to be a parent to get the child’s attention. Let me assure you that the child’s outburst is nothing new, the only difference is that it is happening outside. 1 Like |

Bro you'll surprised at the perfect brain resetting powers that a perfectly timed Igbaju or Ibarun will do to a troublesome child. I think the trouble with most parents in Nigeria talking about the old school kind is always using physical punishment as discipline for every situation. I think spanking should only be used as a last resort that will make the child understand that they messed up badly but truth be told most times na prayers. You can beat your child like a runaway slave yet he turns out to be worse than Escobar others can be super indulgent with theirs yet he is more saintly than Mother Theresa. Itsrm: 1 Like |
