@Robbinhood, the government can use executive fiat. Yes, they can bypass the law. Buhari can act as a strong man and declare it's a matter of national security. And, in a sense, it is.

Don't foreclose these possibilities. Options other than this policy are open to the government. But it's too mentally lazy to explore them.

If you think votes won't be bought on election day, you're dead wrong. The dynamic of poverty will play- these are desperate times and people- I'm scared are increasingly getting desperately in need of food. They'll sell their votes in a flash, even for 1k.

You may think the cash crunch will prevent vote buyers from buying votes. Wait for this- if they don't get Naira, they'll get Dollars or other foreign currencies, and even make transfers.

The policy being weaponised won't achieve its purpose because it's hitting the wrong target- the masses.

Elections are dicey in Africa, arresting candidates or using executive powers to take down a particular candidate can be risky.

Nobody is arguing that criminals will not buy votes but this policy has drastically reduced it because there are not enough cash for them to spend.

How much dollars do we have in the whole of Nigeria that will make a significant impact?

Average Nigerians don't even trust transfer and you think they will wait for like 30 minutes to make and confirm your transfer for vote? grin

Because it is having a negative impact on the economy, the indigenes of Kaduna are engaging in trade by barter. As we speak, your parents at home are suffering and sleeping in hunger because they can't get cash.

Not really, people are using 3rd party apps (like Opay), bank apps and USSD to transfer money. The citizenry is adapting and adjusting gradually...

@Robbinhood, you're muddling up my point. I've not asked for the arrests of these candidates. What I'm saying it that the government can use its state's resources to go after the monies.

If something is possible in principle, the reality is very possible. People don't have to
30 minutes to confirm transfers. They can always go around this.

And, if u doubt that politicians have stockpiles of cash, remember the $40 sth million found at 1004 Estate on Victoria Island. I'm telling you what I know. They too are not resting. They are working hard to beat whatever might stand in their way.

Whichever way one looks at it, the implementation of the policy is poor, abysmal and smacks of insensitivity on the part of the government.

El rufai can get the new notes if he wants but you, how many new notes have you got

He will get it with the help of bandits you mean to say.

If it's so easy for him like you are preaching here, why going to court?

Show me where El Rufia went to court because some people diverted COVID 19 palliative?

It's either you people like suffering or most of you are just useless as humans.

if El rufai can get the new notes he wouldn't be crying. Some of you that are not closer to these governors think they are alpha and Omega. I Know a governor's wife that was looking for only 2 million new not but she couldn't. In fact her account manager even call my wife if he can get only one million.
You will never see them complaining if any policy doesn't affect them.

When this back and forth started,I asked you to tell me in an ambiguous terms what the government could have done to limit vote buying and mopping up the excess cash in people's houses, you said they can use the state apparatus or executive fiats to seize their properties and freeze their accounts. I said, you must get court injunctions to seize properties, most of these politicians have immunity and you cannot freeze account when the cash is at home. Also, this is Africa, everything is seen from the lense of tribe and ethnicity, you need to be careful about how you deal with politicians to avoid tribal wars.

In deploying state's resources to tackle crime, you must always factor in possible eventualities, we've seen Presidents being murdered here in Nigeria.

Yes,the policy could have been implemented in a better way but the results from it (regardless of how it is being implemented) outweighs the pains and setbacks.

Nigerians have been suffering for 7 years, these couple of weeks will not kill anyone (if you don't go on sponsored protests).

We only need it for buying minor things in the market.
Elrufai and Agbado needs it in order to win election. The difference is clear.

Voting from one calamity to another.

@Robbinhood, you still don't get it? Do you? What I've suggested is very clear without complications of contradictions. It's done everywhere.

As for those presidents who were murdered whilst in power, well, some loopholes must have been found in thiwr security set up. Perhaps some mole and infiltrators.

I'm not going to continue to argue with you on this matter. It's pointless. I made my point very clear, but you came with unnecessary argument, which are st best lame attenuations of ideas or received wisdom you cling to, which doesn't move with the everyday traffic of clear thinkers.
