The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, said its attention has been drawn to what it describes as a fraudulent and misleading information circulating on some social media platforms, insinuating there is a planned shutdown of all telecom networks and relevant ICT Units, including online transfer facilities of the banks, with effect from today, February 23, 2023.

NCC advised all Nigerian public, consumers of telecommunications services, and all bank customers to ignore these or similar messages that insinuate deliberate network shutdown or disruption of services in the Nigerian telecom network.

“These malicious and subversive messages originated and are being circulated by fraudsters and unscrupulous elements in the society with the intent to cause chaos and panic among the populace,” the commission said in a statement on Thursday.

The commission said it has received unequivocal assurances from all the service providers to the effect that all the network services are currently in optimal performance, and will not witness any deliberate shutdown or disruptions, especially at this very crucial period of general elections in the country.

“Therefore, all users of telecommunications and banking services utilizing network facilities are assured of continued optimal service delivery before, during, and after the general elections in Nigeria,” it said.

Nigeria needs to start regulating the social media. The government has to start prosecuting people for spreading falsehood.

If two or more persons are prosecuted, everybody go get sense. How can someone just cook up false information and start spreading it? Wrongdoings must have consequences.

I hope people don't set this country on fire by themselves. Someone would just sit in his room and cook up a story to rile people up. Is that kind of person even ok at all. Unfortunately, elderly people in particular are so vulnerable to this fake news pandemic they keep sharing it.

Indeed we know them.

The real reason for fake news is because official information is usually hard to obtain from corporate bodies in Nigeria.

The only comment I have here is that the moderator that gave the headline of this thread is a semi-illiterate that needs proper education and be relieved of his/her job because he/she is not fit to be a moderator with a heading that is totally different from what the NCC is conveying in it's press release

Peter Obi changed the narrative, if it were before you would have seen them frying akara, wrapping and eating corn, eating with the children of the very poor in their classroom, lying down with the sick on their hospital bed. They don’t understand Obi kind of politics that is why they attack him

I for one cannot trust anything coming out from this government ever since the disenfranchisement of Nigerians from voting the party of their choice!

We have always suspected INEC of working for APC

Now, they have confirmed it

That's FALSE. People spread propaganda for their personal gains or due to senseless way of reasoning. Wrongdoings must have consequences in this part of the world.

Before you quoted what I said as false. Did you even bother to give it a thought? If you get a news and you verify from the right body and the process of verifying was easy would you bother spreading it? How easy is it to get official information from a body like the NCC,CBN or Aso rock when you are a nobody? They only respond when their organisation is being rubbished in the media. If the process of verifying fake news is easy, people will be more careful of the news they spread as they will find out most information on our space are false. It will also make it easy to quickly detect those that directly distort these information.

A case in point is when Simon Ekpa was arrested. It was very easy for we here in Nigeria to verify from the Finland authority if the News was fake or real. Can you say same for Nigeria?
