Nigeria elections below expectations, INEC lacked transparency – NDI/IRI observersPublished on February 27, 2023By Wale Odunsi

The International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute (NDI) Joint Election Observation Mission (IEOM) have presented their preliminary statement on the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria.

On Monday in Abuja, the leader, Dr Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi, congratulated the people for “their resilience and enthusiasm”.

“Despite large crowds in some polling stations and long waits, Nigerian voters demonstrated commitment to participate in the process and a strong desire to have their voices heard,” Banda said.

The mission noted that despite the reforms to the Electoral Act 2022, “the election fell well short of Nigerian citizens’ reasonable expectations”, while the electoral commission lacked transparency.

Banda said logistical challenges and multiple incidents of political violence overshadowed the electoral process and impeded a substantial number of voters from participating.

NDI/IRI confirmed currency and fuel shortages imposed excessive burdens on voters and election officials while marginalized groups, especially women, continue to face barriers to seeking and obtaining political office.

The delegation observed that the late opening of polling locations and logistical failures created tensions and the secrecy of the ballot was compromised in some polling units given overcrowding.

Banda said after the polls, challenges with the electronic transfer of results and their upload to a public portal in a timely manner, undermined citizen confidence at a crucial moment of the process.

Inadequate communication and lack of transparency by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about their cause and extent created confusion and eroded voters’ trust in the process.

“The combined effect of these problems disenfranchised Nigerian voters in many areas, although the scope and scale is currently unknown,” the ex-President added.

The statement, however, commended INEC for conducting the general elections according to the electoral calendar “for the first time in the country’s recent history”.

The funny thing in all of these I that nobody is talking about the intimidation, bullying, and beating that happened in the East against voters of APC. An elderly man was manhandled openly. We saw open rigging, but because they lost out eventually, see their tears everywhere. grin

That being said, politicians are more of the problem and not INEC. Nobody will risk his/her life on the integrity of the process when their life is in danger.

Nigerians know the candidate they ever wanted. And we voted massively for the candidate only for INEC to collaborate with APC and PDP to manipulate the whole election.

Up till now 0ver 15 States electoral officers are still with their election results. Preparing manually so that they can present tomorrow after enough manipulations
There is no need for INEC to continue again in the conduct of 11 March governorship Election. New INEC CHAIRMAN should be appointed to take over.
Refusing to upload the election results from the polling unit into their server and portal immediately after the elections is a delibrate act to manipulate the elections results to favour the ruling party.
If Peter Obi could win TINUBU in his own zone
Then INEC should not TAKE the voice of the masses for granted.

Many won't read the message before commenting because of the title.

If LP like, they should fall into the trap of PDP.
No election process is perfect anywhere, LP should enjoy their wins and don't let PDP to cajole them thinking they can get same result if the election is to be conducted again.

After God, fear INEC. We dey busy dey fear the wrong people since. Dear women, we're very sorry

The greatest scam of the decade is for INEC to be shouting BVAS BVAS BVAS since the Electoral Act was signed into law, only for election to come and they didn't transmit result in any state. Not even one state. Yet they want to force the manipulated result on us.

Not like they ever reported any challenge in their use of BVAS all this while or even a day to the elections. They kept assuring us.

In fact, manhood or whatever the INEC chairman calls himself should be jailed this morning for breaking the Electoral law and colluding with APC to rig the elections

This is the worst election this nation has experienced in a long while!

How can we elect someone under these circumstances?!! Why can't we have a winner that can confidently beat his chest that he was widely voted for!

Ideally the figures been quoted by the various state returning officers ought to have been referenced to the data uploaded on the irev as advertised by INEC but what we had was INEC chairman and state officers calling results from an excel spreadsheet that wasn't referenced from anywhere which is unacceptable.

You can as well go to your collation centers and announce results instead of stressing Nigerians with standing in queues to vote and later you don't use those results.

This election will be very easy to audit only if INEC is sincere. All PU results should be uploaded to the Irev website so that all party agents present at the PUs will cross check what was uploaded against what they snapped on that day ,anything short of this is just a waste of everyone's time.

All presiding/collation officers of every PU should be held accountable for any alterations and if they were held under duress then they should have made an official report to INEC prior to the audit.

If they choose to ignore this and go ahead with what they're doing ,next election people will just Netflix and chill without bothering themselves about the process. This is an election not a selection.

INEC made my worst fear come true

after shouting BVAS BVAS BVAS for several months at the end of the day they couldnt even transmit result in any state at all. If the BVAS didnt transmit in few states, we could have excused INEC but it didnt transmit in ANY state. C'mon INEC then why did u waste our taxpayers money and time and expectation?
