If you are a beginner currently learning data analysis/science or you're interested in the field, let's meet here to share ideas, tips and ask questions. Especially those not from a computer science background and experts looking to switch careers.

Here's a link to our telegram group

Those without any IT or programming knowledge should begin with introductory courses like CS50 on EdX or Introduction to computer programming videos on YouTube. It is also helpful to have mentors or join a community of learners with at least a basic programming knowledge.

There are 3 pathways to a data analysis/science career.

Self-taught approach through YouTube videos, documentations and practicing on Kaggle or other platforms.

Instructor-led online courses, both free and paid courses with hands-on labs to practice while learning. Datacamp, Coursera and Codecademy have a lot of self-paced courses that they tout as career-ready once you complete. However, according to other learners I've interacted with, datacamp seems the best platform to learn.

Bootcamps especially the offline type are the best place for beginners but they're usually expensive and not suitable for people with other full-time engagements.

Great, that's as much as I can chip in for now. By the way, I recently started a course with datacamp and I'll add more information as I progress. If you have questions or comments, please drop them here.

I'm interested in Data Science/Analysis and I applied for ALX Data Analyst and Data Science Course which is slated to commence by next month.
I haven't really started all this while because maybe I don't have the proper motivation to begin or I just need some proper guidance.

Good one, I will suggest you create a Whatsapp group to get us engaged I am just starting data analysis on YouTube

ALX bootcamp? That's great. Get ready to do hard things. What's your background anyway?

Great idea. Telegram too with time. What is your background and which particular Youtube course did you start?

I studied Statistics and I've done some self-study on data analytics before.

Statistics is the perfect degree to move into data science. You won't struggle at all with understanding functions. I read ALX new courses now require physical classes.

Physical classes are going to be difficult to attend.
I hope it's not true

In person attendance is one of the requirements. That is why the program will be for those in Lagos where ALX has their hub.

Before the end of this week, I hope to complete my Google Data Analytics Certificate program and then write a summary of the program. I will detail my experience, pros and cons of the program, tips and other general information.

Travel to Lagos for classes from Rivers state? Should be either weekly or monthly. They didn't clarify.

Can't wait to know about your experience. I've been eyeing the certification for sometime now but for the electricity condition in my area
Re: Data Science/analysis Roadmap by Nikes(m): 9:51pm On Mar 09, 2023
So about a month ago, I finally decided to take that step into the world of data analytics. I had just rounded up my B.Tech program, which, infact, was the reason I hadn't gone into that field sooner. The only challenge I've been facing is electricity wahala. I would have gone far by now.

A a beginner, I learnt that it is essential that one gains an expert knowledge of Ms Excel. A lot of jobs require excel as a requisite knowledge. Lots of analyst roles are totally based on excel èspecially in Nigeria.
So yeah, I've been learning s Excel for some time. I'm done with the basics. Kind of in the advanced stage right now. It's been engaging and fun getting to discover how a thing so commonly overlooked by the average computer user can solve such complex analytical problems. I would have gone farther than this if I had constant electricity, but sha...how man go do.
For study materials, I use YouTube videos for now. I downloaded excel beginner, advanced and expert videos from learnit YouTube channel. I downloaded a 13 hour long beginners to expert video by Kyle pew. He's by far the best tutor I've encountered so far. His videos are detailed and very comprehensible. I also downloaded from Learnit and got a couple of excel pdfs from different sites. I intend to go into them after I'm done with the videos. One of them goes deep into complex analytical methods. The bonus there is, they all come with exercise files.

Someone sent me a link to download IBM data analytics 18 hour length video but I intend to finish with the excel course first.

After excel, I intend to pick up SQL. After SQL, I'll go into the IBM data analytics video. As for visualization I intend to go through the course first before picking up Power BI.
I pray to be consistent and never give up. By God's grace in five months I would be gooder than good. See y'all at the top

Fortunately, I have been having adequate power at home. I hope the condition gets better at your side.

This is great! You've been learning by yourself. The main extra about certificate programs is that they go beyond just the technical side of analytics.

Do the excel youtube videos come with real-word data problems for you to analyse and visualise? Do you have a profile where you document the datasets or projects you've worked on?
Re: Data Science/analysis Roadmap by yung7(m): 2:26pm On Mar 12, 2023
I am learning from YouTube videos, but please someone should help me with data science project for intermediate,I think from scratch to finish at least I can know steps on how to gather information before coding.if you have source where I can get it please tell me.

You can get projects from the same YouTube or directly on Kaggle.

What field of data science are you focusing on?

The videos come with exercise files such as automobie
inventories, employee records, sales records and such. I just had an idea to do something on arsenals Premier league data in the last 10 years. I'm still strategizing on that though.
About a profile, if you mean a LinkedIn or github profile, no I don't. But I would love your input in that regard.
I want to be able to work on more complex problems as time goes on. Gain maximum proffeciency in Ms Excel before transitioning to sql.

I love the discussions and deliberations going on here. Hopefully, it should continue in a mature way.

I have also journeyed into the data analysis world. I have been learning haphazardly and am here and there but I intend to build a portfolio as a new entrant.

I have learnt Excel and still learning.
I have learnt SQL up to Intermediate stage but I have left it to go back to excel being a sine-qua-none- prerequisites to data analysis.
I touched the theoretical part of Python

This week, by His grace, I want to work on a data set.

Guys, so you mind if I create a WhatsApp group for us as learners to interact?!

It would be lovely!

Hi everyone, as for me, I have completed the IBM Data Science professional certificate. Currently pursuing SAP Technology Professional Consultant Certificate all in Coursera. I applied for financial aid.
I have skills in python programming language, SQL, Jupiter Notebook, Machine learning, Deep learning, and R programming language. With little Microsoft Excel. Self-taught

Creating a WhatsApp group won't be a bad idea if it will have good rules & regulations to follow & benefit from it.

As for me, all I know is excel to an average level, but you guys have inspired me, and I'm going for it. cool wink

Far beyond a beginner.

Some of us are just starting out.

Perhaps, a WhatsApp group can help us all interact and share ideas.

WhatsApp would serve as a discussion forum. Let's build our community on telegram. We can all share our experiences and ask questions that new people can always see.
