Itsrm: Until we build strong and independent institutions, a lot of the things Nigeria is trying to achieve as a nation will be subject to the interpretation of the government in power which is absolutely wrong and an abuse of power. Do you know the number of lower court judgements that are being disregarded by the State and Local government? How about government parastatals, ministries and private companies? This is a bigger issue and will require an accountable and selfless Senate/ House of reps to address. We have to start by sending competent representatives who have can actually check the excesses of the Executive arm of government not rubber stamp members of the house. 2 Likes 1 Share |

nihilistjnr: actually it is possible because a lot of bank workers were robbing the banks blind at the time. there is an ex-bank worker [ banned for life from working in a bank or financial institution if i recall) who is building a house in shoreline estate. shoreline is the new banana island. 500m per plot. surbaban style layout. houses can cost up to 900m to build. the man has been out of the industry for over 8 years and his loot never finish. my partner said back then the guy used to fly them to uk on the regular. but as everyone hand dey the mess one way or another - na to exit the man from the bank without prosecution there was the guy in my office then who was using the company to get forex from CBN run his trades and return the cash. it was when teh whole thing blew open we found the guy was living large codedly. |

My dear Lagosians, I have noted the difficulties that you have been having over the naira redesign crisis. I feel your pains. Kindly note that commercial banks have been directed to accept the old N500 and N1,000 notes as deposits and pay them out for withdrawals. Putting the needs of our residents above all, we successfully got a Supreme Court verdict which extends the validity of the existing Naira notes till Dec 31st, 2023. The CBN at a Bankers Committee meeting yesterday directed Banks to resume acceptance in compliance. I urge all businesses in Lagos to accept the old notes as it is legal tender. Anyone rejecting these notes will be heavily sanctioned as we kick off monitoring. If a bank refuses to accept deposits of old notes, please lodge a complaint with LASCOPA on 08124993895. The Lagos State Government will report the bank to the CBN and immediately shut down the offending branch. I assure you that this too shall pass as the authorities are working to ensure that the teething problems of the redesigning of our currency are resolved. - Babajide Sanwo-Olu 1 Like |

These Governors should stop grandstanding, they dont control the CBN or the banks. Unless the CBN sent a memo to the banks to start accepting the old notes as deposit, nothing is going to change. |

nihilistjnr: that one started from 2015/2016 . when import duty was jacked up to be fair the policy was conceived under gej, but buhari implemented it toyota corolla, the most popular car in vi [ in rush hour you could literally see chains of corollas one after the other, just different shades ) went from 6m to 20m . and that was the end of a lot of companies buying official cars, even mgr cars sef. na only ogas at the top top who could get company car. everyone else na grant from that point on |

A friend of mine went to do that shït and ended up getting robbed and beaten up by some cult boys out there. I'm a couple sets below you, but back then I think Babcock were like the premium private uni, so all their girls seemed to be rich, although na packaging las las. |

Itsrm: The houses of Rep & Senate are the bedrocks/ foundation of strong institutions in any country. Political parties must do a better job at identifying candidates who uphold the principles of checks and balance, not for personal favors. I have nothing against political parties rewarding loyalist with slots for both houses, as long as there is a competitive and fair process. However, they must ensure the candidate is one that can uphold the tenets of democracy and hold other branches of the government accountable. Right now, we just have a bunch of rubber stamp members who do not understand that the power of government actually lies within the walls of both houses. The executive is just too powerful in Nigeria and that is why they can abuse power and disregard court rulings, including the Supreme Court. It is only in Nigeria that State governors can sack members of the State house of Representatives or appoint LG chairmen! Let me give you an example, the Biden administration tried to use executive order to cancel student debt but that move has been stalled by the judgement of an Appellate Court in Texas. Immediately the appeal court ruled against it, Biden took it to the Supreme court but the important thing is that he complied and respected the ruling of the Appeal Court in Texas. The compliance by the Executive arm was immediate, they did not try to reinterpret the ruling or go ahead with canceling the student, they adhered to the ruling and that is how it is supposed to be. Governors have no business getting involved in this CBN policy, the House of Rep/ Senate are the ones who should be championing this issue, that is why they are there in the first place. Nigeria is a huge mess! 3 Likes 2 Shares |
