Not true.

The tax base in Nigeria is unbelievably low. Even to the point of ridiculousness.

Both the formal sector and informal sector are not being captured adequately for tax purposes
any person that can evade tax in Nigeria but chooses to pay it is a fool

I pay 8,000 per year to the Local government for my shop. This is apart from other ridiculous tickets that come up once in a while

Imagine collecting that amount from all shops in Ado-Odo/Ota local government. Yet, that amount is not captured in the tax data

Every Okada rider buys ticket every single day to operate. Some go as high as 1,000 sef. Yet it is not captured.

I just wanted to repeat his comment so it will sound true to me.

Ma main man. Don't make it look like it is only Buhari who is guilty of this. It's a Nigerian thing.

.
Joe! Joe!

Let me help you with another one.

While you are all making Emefiele the fall guy for the Naira redesign, Buhari appointed Aisha Buhari's biological brother as the Managing Director of Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company just before he announced the redesign policy. It was Buhari's plan all along.

https://saharareporters.com/2022/09/01/buhari-appoints-first-lady-aishas-brother-managing-director-nigerian-security-printing

Multiple hundreds of billions have been earmarked for and spent on the Naira redesign but it's been a failure so far. Asiha Buhari is pointing at the cabals while her own brother is the reason we are in this mess.

Yet Emefiele is the fall guy and Buhari the innocent one. Let's make excuses for Buhari.

I want to understand you very well.

Infrastructure Buhari pass Jonathan. I don't need Google for this.

Social Investment Programme. Buhari pass am. I don't need Google for this.

Encouraging Local production. Buhari pass am.

Agricultural Revolution, Buhari pass am. About 13 million jobs was created because of that and so many industries sprang up unlike Jonathan that killed Local production.

Watin Jonathan pass Buhari for, make una talk.

Nigerians were enjoying subsidy on imported goods and they think it was all Jonathan. Never knew Jonathan was spending money recklessly instead of addressing that. We ate our money on one day without thinking about tomorrow.
Social Investment Programme - Welfarism with zero transparency and accountability.

Local Production - Truly Buhari increased Nigeria's Manufacturing to GDP ratio from 9% to 15% but we are still doing poorly especially if you consider that our GDP is not growing under Buhari.

Agricultural Revolution - How do we measure this if not through prices of food? On an average, Nigerians budget more % of their income for food now than pre-2015.

Job creation - In which/what sector? Nigeria has about 33% unemployment rate now.

Buhari probably outdid Jonathan "infrastructurally" speaking but in other areas, I humbly disagree.

The saintly politicians who will stop stealing and turn the country into South Korea and Germany.

Where are they?

We have elections every 4 years but we keep missing them.
The leaders are a reflection of the people, and something is fundamentally with Africans.

At the roots of the leadership problem and corruption plaguing Nigeria lie various core issues such as disdain for critical thinking and philosophy, religion (the foreign religions), and tribalism.

Rational people are few and far between in this part of the world, and any society with very few intelligent minds hardly develops.

The black race is much less intelligent than the other races. That's a fact, and the evidence for this assertion abounds. Compounding the problem is the issue of brain drain where the few highly intelligent people in Africa relocate to the West.

Can you compare this Social Investment Programme with that of Sure P? The selection process was/ is very fair.

Did employment increase under Jonathan?

Make we just leave this matter.

Modified. I just checked. Nigeria Bereau of Statistics (NBS) said our GDP has been increasing by 3.58 percent yearly since 2020.

The only president who can be said to have done anything about corruption was Obj. At the very least I remember how tafa balogun was summarily punished

Under gej, there were zero consequences for numerous scandals. One of the reasons Buhari was voted in was because we expected zero tolerance for corruption. That did not happen.

Both Buhari and gej failed woefully as far as tackling corruption is concerned.

OBJ also created EFCC.

But the creation of EFCC is not enough. We still need a more sanitised justice system, more Prisons, more Prosecutors etc I don't even understand why EFCC hires private attorneys to prosecute corruption cases, it eats me up.

There is also the tribal/religious angle, which politicians are going to prison? Are they from a region? Are they of the same faith?

But like people have said on this thread, thieving politicians are the only problem of the country. Once they are replaced with saints, Nigeria will become better than Japan, Germany and USA.

i am not sure of this.

what i believe is happening is that a lot of informal tax is a black hole that goes into some peoples pockets

i drive a pickup with commercial plates. this means i have to pay local govt fees yearly. there are two or three fees paid mid year. unlike vehicle license - these have to be paid at local govt. you can pay your vehicle license in a bank. but these local govt charges - they are going straight into the pockets of the task force.

there are a lot of taxes collected from artisans, hawkers etc - that are also going straight to pockets and not to govt.

even with businesses - there are often complaints from workers that tax was deducted from their payslip, but no evidence of tax payment

There is this and there's also the fact that the tax captured is really small compared to what it should be. I'll give a simple example.

According to Nigeria tax laws, As a Corporate or Individual, Every single time you pay for a service - Artisans, Plumbers, Electricians, Installers, Domestic workers, The law says you are to deduct 5% or 10% (depending on the nature of the service) as WHT from these payments. These deductions should ideally go into the govt coffers

Do you honestly think these happens?. Think about the volume of these transactions that goes on daily and then you can quantify how much escapes the tax net.

As for corporates deducting and not remiting, Not surprising though as anything goes in Nigeria. Probably bribing the tax officials.

As an aside The wht may actually be ultimately easy to implement. Mandate all artisans to have a business account. So any transfer to the account is automatically deducted. I believe This can work because In lag, I already pay all artisans via transfer.

Social media — even with all its benefits — aids the spread of fake news and misinformation. Thus, some reports of child marriage in the North are false.

Even so, the menace of child marriage in the region is underreported in the media, just like all other vices in society.

Child marriage in the North underscores the nexus between religion and poverty in the region, which has some of highest population growth figures in the world.

the summary [for me] is that both gej and buhari left this country in a worse state than they met it

how much of that can be tied to external factors and how much of that can be tied to personal competence is debatable

but in the end, neither of them added much value to nigeria or the lives of nigerians
That is because GEJ and Buhari are corrupt thieves. Imagine the money budgeted for food in Aso Rock monthly, that money if invested in Nigeria will have transformed the country to Taiwan by now.

I hope that one day, saintly Messiahs will eventually be elected across all political offices in Nigeria. Together, they will grow the country economy from below a trillion dollars to 20 trillion dollars.

These saintly Messiahs who will rule Nigeria will have no convoys, they will always take public transport, all Government vehicles will be sold and by totally cutting the cost of governance, in little time, Nigeria will tower above Japan and Germany.

By the time the saintly Messiah who will rule Kogi state becomes Governor. Once he sells all the Government assets and invest the money in Kogi state. Kogi will begin to compete with New York.

If you study history of humanity and follow the current happenings in the world, that fact becomes clear.

You think Nigeria is poor, but in reality, it's not. But the majority of Nigerians are mentally poor because they detest philosophy and critical thinking which form the bedrock of civilization.

Greatness starts from the mind.

All aspects of civilization, including science, arts, music, entertainment, architecture, esthetics, ethics, morality, and others all have their roots in philosophy and critical thinking.

Check the history of today's countries and you'll see many great thinkers they've produced. There are many great thinkers in Europe; many in Asia, and other regions as well except Africa.

How many great thinkers has Africa produced in modern times? Very few.

The top countries in the world have more thinkers than their counterparts in Africa.

Africa used to be great in the past, but colonialism and those Abrahamic religions (which are like cancers) sounded the death knell on civilizations in Africa.

So long most Africans practice Islam and Christianity, the black race will always be led by the Europeans and Arabs.

Sadly, there's no end in sight for the hegemony of the Europeans and Arabs over Africans.
