Firstly, you need to check the skill level of the occupation. I think ICT support engineer is a level 1 occupation requiring a bachelor degree. ACS does do experience in lieu which will make you lose experience points.

ICT support requires a diploma or so. In addition, you have to check if the occupations are being nominated by any state.

Going by points you can gain, I will suggest the support officer with TRA.

I am a Computer sci BSc graduate from OOU in nigeria with 13years ICT experience in telecomms and my spouse is an Msc holder in environmental toxicology & mgt pollution but no work experience. However,she is self employed in Photography & makeup. I intend to apply for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189),Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190),Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) or Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

I need some clarifications on the below questions.

1.When checking the points calculator. what should i choose for the question."what is your highest qualification?" because i plan of assessing my qualification/experience with ACS which might decrease my years of experience.#i pray i get 8years remaining afterall anyway!

2. When checking the points calculator for partner skill. what does it mean when chosen the below options.
i.Your spouse or defacto partner must also be an applicant for this visa and meet age,English and skill criteria?
ii.Your spouse or defacto partner must also be an applicant for this visa and has competent English?

1) Your BSc. (although, experienced folks can advise more on this in view of the university you graduated from)

2) There are minimum requirements that your spouse is also expected to meet, to boost your points by 10 and 5 respectively:

i) For you to be eligible for the award of these points (10) your partner must be an applicant for the same visa subclass and must not be an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen. Additionally, you will need to provide evidence that when you were invited to apply for this visa that they:
a) were under 45 years old
b) had competent English
c) had nominated a skilled occupation that is eligible for points
d) had a suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for their nominated skilled occupation.

ii) For you to be eligible for the award of these points (5) your partner must be an applicant for the same visa subclass and must not be an Australian permanent resident or an Australian citizen.

In your case, point (ii) may be more applicable as your spouse appears not to have work experience which aligns with her qualification.

You are required to pay taxes irrespective of whether it’s self or paid employment.

Your immediate worry should be getting a positive assessment from ACS before thinking of claiming work experience. ACS is known to reduce work experience depending on your qualification and how long you have been in the occupation.

Meanwhile, if you get a positive assessment from ACS with your years of service approved, you can claim the Australian work experience points

Whether Microfinance or commercial bank, they are all the same. It’s acceptable.

You can either access as a technologist with EA or if you have drafting experience with autocad, you can be assessed as civil engineering draftsperson. Your HND will be assessed as advanced diploma (10 points). I went through VETASSESS as a civil draftsperson with HND and ND. They will deduct 1 year from your experience as qualifying year.

ICT Support Technician is not a Skill level occupation so you are covered. Your degree might be assessed to be AQF associate degree equivalent but it will still meet the qualification requirement for the occupation.

As previously advised up there, he can choose any civil engineering technician related occupation that aligns with his current skills. He can even assess as a bricklayer with his qualification if he has the experience.
He cannot meet the qualification requirement for skill level 1 occupations. Outside that, he has variety of options.


For you, you cannot give him points with skills assessment except in English test. This is because the assessment for legal profession is completely different just like medicine. You must first be called to the bar in any state in Australia before you get a positive assessment.
