Power of the pen pierces through just writing stories.

Kongi's Harvest is among.

The Dance of the Forests is another one.

The Trials of Brother Jero is another one.

Jero's Metamorphosis is another.

And Wole Soyinka is perhaps the most prolific Nigerian writer too.
Read all these. Picked the first two because I resonated with them

Bear in mind these are opinions.

Achebe was mainly a novelist. Soyinka is mainly a playwright. Each GOATED in his main field. No need to derail this place cos i have seen this movie before.

"Project NIGERIA, I must confess, has become near terminally soul-searing. Do I still believe in it? I am no longer certain but - first we must rid ourselves of the tyranny of the ignorant and the opportunism of time-servers. In any case, there is not much else to engage one on a foundation of ownership stakes."

......almost assume it was nihilistjnr that penned these lines.

This was written by someone who actually tried to prevent the civil war and served hard time for his efforts.

Nigeria is done

You know as e dey go. I for one will prefer those 2 to remain in the firmament where they belong. They both did their jobs probably as well as any Nigerian has ever done anything, in any field.

Achebe had the uncanny ability to paint the most vivid of pictures with words, just words. But he was more than that: reading an Achebe novel is like being in a 7D theatre - you feel it and live it in real-time. There's a reason the greatest writers out there worship Achebe and why there are a billion notable quotes and references from his books about any life issue.

Wole Soyinka is more into sophistry - preferring flowery words even when such break the narrative flow.

When it comes to literature - prose, drama, and poetry, Achebe's penmanship hasn't been surpassed by any Nigerian dead or alive.

How about Achebe's poetry and drama, no where to be found?

Wole Soyinka is a far better playwright and poet than Achebe ever was.

How about that?

There are 3 genres of literature. While Achebe might be a better novelist, Wole Soyinka (WS) is a better playwright and poet.

Wole Soyinka's plays and poems have everlasting themes and they are far more captivating than Achebe's plays and poems, if Achebe ever wrote plays.

Also, some of Wole Soyinka's plays are rooted in his philosophy of Yoruba/African theory of literature titled The Fourth Stage, which revolves around four stages of existence: the World of the Unborn, the World of the Living, the World of the Dead, and the Chthonic Realm (the Home of the Tragic Spirits). It is how Wole Soyinka uses this theory to rationalize some of his plays that you should find out first. It's actually deep. You find out first because it is not pedestrian. No Nigerian writer's work is as philosophical and deep as Wole Soyinka"s plays and poems.

For example, Wole Soyinka uses his play Jero's Metamorphosis to illustrate his theory The Fourth Stage.

Why do you think Wole Soyinka won the Nobel Laureate but Achebe didn't?

No debate.

How can Achebe be renowned for only a few novels and Wole Soyinka be renowned for a lot more drama texts and poems and you still regard a master of one over a master of two?

How?

We are proud of them all. We will continue to celebrate them forever.

I LOVE books.

With words one can create anything, can be anything.

I was introduced when I was a child (if to say I dey America I'd have definitely been placed on Ritalin or some shit for ADHD) because books and football were the only things I could sit still for. And I never looked back.

Btw even as a science student I took Literature in waec.

Soyinka is one of the greatest African writer and arguably the best Nigerian writer. Achebe writes with primarily African for African. When you read "There was a Country" , you understand the way Achebe approaches writing. I liken Achebe to Ngugi wa' Thiongo and Femi Osofisan.

Soyinka's Jero plays critiques the public Executions at the beach and pastors

The Man died was about his experiences as a Nigerian prisoner for 2 years on the suspicion that he was a Biafran spy.

His books tends to critique situations and are commonly satire

Malaila won the Nobel Laureate for simply not dying at the hands of the Taliban. She won for staying alive. We should all get a Nobel Prize each for surviving Boko Haram.

Obama won the Nobel despite decimating the Middle East which even he confessed to.

DiCaprio didn't win the Oscars until recently in his mid-forties. He almost had to die in ice and parrot some climate change talking point to be deemed worthy despite headlining several classics as the lead actor even in his twenties. Imagine not winning the Oscar for Titanic 26 years ago.

I could go on and on. Some of these award categories are judged subjectively (which isn't me stating Soyinka is any less deserving).

No Nigerian penperson dead or alive matches Achebe.
