In those days Africans didn't know much so they seccumbed to all manner of rubbish. Today make any idiot try Abacha or Kigame style of leadership in Nigeria and see the kind of reaction it will arouse from the people Strong Federalism anyday. I am one of the few Ghanaians who wants Ghana to practice a decentralised system where the regions vote for their own leaders, take their own decisions and develop their regions. vankelvin:Nah I don't think it's because Africans didn't know much then. There were constant protests and plots against Abacha from all over the country but somehow he managed to police the country and could detect coup plots from a mile. Even Obasanjo was accused, arrested and thrown into prison. Some Nigerians at a time even hijacked a plane. Nigerians made lots of plots then but they all failed. Even today, Sudan is still protesting against the military Government to no avail. The real reason why it is almost impossible for Nigeria and Ghana to go back to that military style of leadership today is because in both countries, steps have been taken to seperate the military from Government and build up the democracy, and not because the citizens can do much in the case of a military take over or one man rule. One of the first things Obasanjo did between 1999 and 2003 was to retire hundreds of army generals and top men in the army. I believe the Ghanaian military ruler of the late 1990's (Rawlings) also took steps to usher Ghana into her somewhat stable democracy today. |

If you had asked me this question in 1999 I would have agreed wholeheartedly with you but having seen how things have progressed not just in Nigeria but other parts of Africa I'm not sure 100%. In terms of curbing impunity and corruption democracies all over Africa haven't done too well although I will have to admit democracy has helped improve infrastructure in most countries on the continent Nigeria included. Military rule really did a number on us. From General Buhari, IBB, Abacha and Abdulsalami no major investment in infrastructure like power plants, refineries, hospitals, dams, etc. Even though Abacha built some roads especially in Northern Nigeria it wasn't widespread to have a big impact on people's lives. vankelvin: |

Just40:Botswana are charging 12%,and they do provide all these basic stuff like schooling, healthcare, etc Tanzania do 18% and u still get basic stuff like free education, loans for higher education, now National health insurance is happening And scholarship especially for science and technical students. 40% is way too much for an African nation which has many folks operating in informal economy |
Re: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by Just40: 7:29pm On Apr 08, 2023 |
Kazikazi:What is Botswana's population again? Ghana is providing free boarding education and a health insurance that covers a wide range of things. Everyone's child benefits from it including most politicians, the rich and middle class. 42% is nothing, you won't even feel it... Our spending is providing services for everyone That is why the 40% is okay... Those making huge monies in the informal economy can pay their fair share of taxes. African countries are the ones who should be charing huge shares of taxes because there's a lot to do. Let me help you with another.... This is the taxes paid of a 2019 Accord. 73,300 cedis Only 49,000 cedis goes to the government as duty charges and VAT The rest goes into special funds for education and health The more you spend, the more tax you pay... That's smart

You wont feel it when Accra is one world most expensive cities - reason 40% goes to a bankrupt debt ridden gov. Well how would a mad man feel anything. Is there anyone sane in Ghana? Look like Jerry Rawling is needed posthmously Just40: |
Re: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by Mkenya2019: 8:09pm On Apr 08, 2023 |
If people are dying from insecurity - a military rule is better option. Nigeria need Abacha if it cannot invest in security - and stop the kidnapping, boko haram, and cattle rustling. Development will ONLY happen after you deal with basic security. Let alone basic like electricity and water. Nigeria level of dysfunctionality is just crazy. Nigeria would be better off going back to military rule. I dont see how politician will solve the problems that country faces if they are not ready to institute Abacha like reform or well Jerry Rawling type. Anyway the trend in West Africa shows military dictatorship are coming back. Ghana has become broke, expensive and dysfunctional. So there is hardly any bright star - maybe Ivory Coast. Mkenya2019:It doesn't look like we've over borrowed as we are still withing our limit spending only 25% of revenue on repayment for 2023 Massive infrastructure projects From roads to hospitals to providing massive investment into export ventures to investing in our oil industries. Broke Kenya can't do any of these 2 Likes |

Mkenya2019:Accra is and expensive place because of it abundance of prime real estates. We the citizens ain't complaining about it and are even willing to pay more because we receive the benefits we require. Universal coverage in almost everything. Kenya should try that instead of borrowing itself Into bankruptcy where almost 90% of it revenue is going into debt servicing. Kenya can start by electing sensible leaders instead of the fool*s that only feed their families and just maybe it won't go broke by instituting a debt loop that has trapped it. Start providing electricity for Kenyans, water for Kenyans, good roads for Kenyans. Opportunities that will make Kenyans prosper like Ghanaians and build good homes to live in. Good hospitals and schools These things ain't rocket science |

Mkenya2019:Kenya has gone broke such that everything in Kenya has stalled... 😂🤣😂 You'll see development maybe after the next 10 years Meanwhile Ghana has almost 12 billion dollars worth of projects in development. Even the few rich Kenyans are do afraid of how poor the rest of the country is such that they've locked themselves away in the forest away from the rest of the country to prevent them from unleashing on them. 😂🤣 Meanwhile Ghanaians can freely park their cars on streets without worry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9NUaNMmtAE 2 Likes |

Sound like bla bla bleating of a goat after he just paid 40% of his meal to be eaten by gov that has overborrowed and is broke. Apart from healthcare - Kenya beat Ghana in the rest of the stuff. Invest in sewage system - that way you wont be spewing shiet daily here. Just40: |

And healthcare is pretty close - and we dont have to pay 2.5% for healthcare for every purchase of goods and service. We pay 3-4 dollars every month. Ruto is bringing it down to 2-3 dollars per month - for universal healthcare - not whoooooooooooooooooooooping 2.5% in every purchase crazy country Kenya Health Insurance (The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) According to recent data from NHIF, the current membership is 14.3 million principal members, and 18.6 million dependents, totaling 32.9 million beneficiaries. This is 69 per cent of the total population of 47 million Kenyans. Soon it will be transformed to social insurance fund - and it will be cheap - 2-3 dollars a month - or 30 dollars a year. who on earth levies health insurance on every purchase of goods and services? |

Mkenya2019:Rest of what ...? 🤣😂 Are you afraid to say it? Kenya need to invest in sewage systems so that Nairobi streets don't get overflown by sewage every time and make everywhere stink. Roadless with sewage overflowing the street 🤣😂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKEA-iNOpYA Ghana has far better sewage and drainage systems. 2 Likes |

Rest of evrything; We spend 30% of our budget on education - more than 6B dollars (half your budget or almost all revenues you collect); we have free primary to university education;actually free from pre-school; healthcare is generally free; user fee is like half a dollar; most kenya still have basic health insurance; we have better reliable electricity with 10 hour of blackout per month on average (mostly due to rain storms) -zero blackout; Dont talk infrastracture That will just be funny. We can discuss social investment. Infrastracture you're near Nigeria - totally dysfunctional. Just40: |

Nobody can justify adding 2.5% tax on every purchase of goods & services to fund healthcare. That is crazy. We have had NHIF(healthcare) since 1963. NSSF (social pension) since 60s. What can we learn from a bankrupt country like Ghana Kenya NHIF was established in 1967 as a department within the ministry of health, by an Act of parliament. This has been reviewed over the years and it is now governed by ACT NO. 9 of 1998 - National Hospital Insurance Fund Act.[3] The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) was established in 1965 by an Act of Parliament (CAP 258 of the Laws of Kenya) in order to administer a provident fund scheme for all workers in Kenya. I think in Ghana both social health insurance and pension are new things Just40: |

Mkenya2019:you spend 30% of your budget of education and end up with a horrible education system with less quality infrastructure. The fees that your students in high school and university pays does not show a free education. Shut up and learn proper Your citizens are so poor such that they can't pay for healthcare care, because they are charged for everything. How Did it became free for them ?😂🤣 Lie in a better way Sorry your electricity hasn't gotten to our kind of quality supply, reliability, availability, consumption levels and reach. Kenya is so far behind. How come we have more infrastructure than your poor broke country? Under normal circumstances, you should have had more than us because you have twice our population. We have more roads tarred, far better and advanced healthcare system, more better schools and a far advanced educational system and etc 2 Likes 2 Shares |
