It meant you borrowed a total of 98k, bought the computer for 97k and kept the remaining 1k for yourself, so no extra 1k anywhere. I’m not sure I explained it correctly. 1 Like |

Sure you got it. It simply means the individual borrowed 98k and no longer 100k. Then having spent 97K on laptop, he/she held 1k. |

When you owe someone money, it is minus, so - 49k + (-49k) = -98k and not 98k If you sell the laptop 97k + 1k with you, that is 98k to balance your debt. 98k +2k you gave your parents is 100k and everything is balanced. |

Barims: The missing 1k is not missing, and the solution lies in the way the question is phrased. The initial debt was 100k, which was split equally between your mum and dad. When you returned 1k to each of them, the total debt reduced to 98k (49k + 49k). The additional 1k that you kept for yourself is not a part of the debt, so adding it to the total debt of 98k is incorrect. So, there is no missing 1k. The correct way to calculate the total amount spent would be: Laptop cost: 97k Borrowed from mum: 50k Borrowed from dad: 50k Total borrowed: 100k Change received: 3k Returned to dad: 1k Returned to mum: 1k Kept for yourself: 1k 1 Like 1 Share |
