For a typical African, one of the signs of being successful in life is to go on a "holy" visit to Makkah. Waste millions of naira to go see a shrine; then, when you come back, they give you a name (Alhaji/Alhaja) as a certified slave. Lols, I just dey laugh yesterday while listening passively to one Ramadan lecture where the cleric was explaining the virtues of hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah). If I've millions to visit a holy land, I'd rather go and see the origin of my ancestors at Ile-Ife and use the rest to give scholarships to students, pay hospital bills of sick people, and help other needy people in my immediate environment. Not visiting some local god (a deity) in a shrine thousands of miles away and helping the Arabs boost their economy while being a resident in the poverty capital of the world. |

Melvyn11:Then you don't know what tourism is. It's not a sin if you don't go on tourism. Going on tourism is completely voluntary. Hajj is a key pillar of Islam, meaning it's a must you go on a "holy" visit to Makkah as a Muslim if you've the means. |

A001:You are the one that actually don't know the meaning of Tourism. People go on tourism for different variety of reasons and religion is one of them. |

Melvyn11:Some Muslims go on hajj for tourism. But for most Muslims, tourism isn't the major reason for going on hajj. Stop mentioning me unnecessarily with all these your funny takes on issues. |

Melvyn11: Government should not be funding religious “tourism”. At least not the government of a country whose citizens are dying before their time due to malnutrition, poor healthcare, bad roads etc. If you want to be a tourist you should foot your own bills rather than siphoning government funds. Yet another useless government subsidy brought to you courtesy of the clueless Nigerian governments. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 10:19am On Apr 12, 2023 |
afrodoc2: Nothing wey I dislike pass make government dey sponsor people for pilgrimage . Some see it as a way of rewarding party faithfuls and grassroots mobilizers ; but I clearly see it as waste of public funds in such a way that the religious sentiments of the people would never allow them question such act of “benevolence “. Methinks most of those governors who sponsor people on pilgrimage do not do so because they even believe in such ; most likely they pad the pilgrimage expenses and remove their own from it after getting approval of the people . 1 Like 1 Share |

BlueRayDick:Those oyinbos are mostly those from Brazil, Haiti, T&T, the US, Cuba, and other places where there are Yoruba settlements. Other than that, any Oyinbo that attends the festival do so voluntarily for tourism or for pedagogical reasons. But for Muslims in Africa and for Muslims generally, hajj is a must if you've the means. If you don't go, you've committed a great sin against Allah. 1 Like |

BlueRayDick: If you know the politicking that goes into making it into those pilgrimage lists you go bow. Of course the governors don’t bother about belief. It is just a way of sharing loot and rewarding cronies. I never chop country that is expert at wasting money. 1 Like 1 Share |

afrodoc2:Federal Government don't pay for pilgrimage in Nigeria. When they say sponsored they are only selling Forex to them at reduced rate. Intending pilgrims buy forex at reduced rate not that the government is paying for them. Huge misconception. |

A001: I was just playing the devil's advocate ni jare. I believe the arabs and the westerners who brought us religion did a number on our forefathers and somehow the grip is still tight on we their descendants. More like they broke them; beyond the guns, swords and cannons....like they broke something in them. I know quite a number of people who beg, borrow and even cheat their way to gather money for pilgrimage only to come back to their normal lives. 1 Like |
