Why Aren't Nigerians Talking About This? by Joeev: 2:26pm On Apr 19, 2023
I'm wondering why Nigerians are keeping mute about the removal of fuel subsidy.. Fuel prices are projected to rise to around ₦800 naira a litre cheapest, that's a 300% increase from ₦200, diesel prices to ₦900. It's not just about knowing the numbers, do you guys know the amount of damage this will cause? It's will be catastrophic if they do this.

Removal of fuel subsidy in its entirety isn't bad at all, but not just at this point, not this time, it's like someone pulling the plug of a life support machine on a man who's struggling to breathe. When this subsidy is removed, the government will have excess money, and we know what excess money in the hands of politicians mean, if the little they have for us they still steal, how much more when they have excess?

I'm just trying to make common sense here, we need to put away our tribalism and religious differences and come together and think!

How many poor Nigerians can afford a loaf of bread at ₦600 now let alone when it gets to ₦1000 after the removal of fuel subsidy because prices of things will go up exponentially. In addition to the greed of the middlemen, who will use this as an excuse to inflate, the prices will spiral beyond control. Businesses that cannot cope with the cost of running will close down, workers who are working earning the minimum wage will essentially finish their salaries on just transportation alone.

This is not a doomsday article, this will be our reality if we let this happen.

The IMF said removal of fuel subsidy is a great idea and should be done without hesitation, we know the IMF, they always have sinister plans. They gave the government a loan of 800million dollars to be distributed amongst poor Nigerians, they know quite well this money will be stolen, if it gets to upto even 500,000 poor Nigerians, that would be very good of them, but it wouldn't.

You have 800million dollars to give, why don't you ensure they use this money to revive our refineries? Which will create more jobs, alongside the Dangote refinery waiting for completion. This would dampen the effect of the removal of this subsidy, not only that, it would be perfect for the economy, but no, now this money will even make the govt hurry up with their plans.
No wonder people are trying to flee this country every minute!

And the politicians aren't speaking up about this subsidy and I'm sure you know why.

Can we afford to let this happen to us??

Please seun, lalasticlala mynd44, rockfarano move this to the front page, so our people can be aware

We should afford to let this happen really, since fuel subsidy only gives us as much fuel as the government wants to subsidise, which starves us of energy.

Market determined fuel prices will increase fuel in the country as more jump in to make profit, and as more jump in more fuel is produced and it's price drops.

Will take a while, of course, and a while of lots of pain, but things are far too cheap in Nigeria, I mean, 30k minimum wage? That's far too cheap for your labour.

After scrapping fuel subsidy, scrap NYSC too and let people earn what they are worth!

Oh! And thank you Dangote Refinery. May you be operational soon.

Subsidy removal is not the problem. The problem is that our kwarupt polithiefcians will still syphon all the crude oil with or without subsidy.

Inflation rate hit 20 some percent from 14%
That means if you had 1m in the bank as of December it's only worth 800k in value as we speak

If you aren't killing the game now using the internet you are seriously slacking because the bills no de slow down

Nigerians don't want anything that will delay Buhari from leaving, they have concluded that this Buhari's govt that couldn't help for eight good years can't help or do anything for them anymore, they would rather wait for the incoming govt before voicing their opinion sad

how many times will fuel subsidy go? All the price increases Buhari's govt did were attested to being the result of subsidy removal, where is the new "subsidy" coming from when they have been removed before by this administration? Nigerians are suffering because this administration failed to either build new refineries or rehabilitate the old ones, even if "fuel subsidy " is "removed" again, without building new refineries or rehabilitating the old ones, the same suffering will continue.

Why talk about it now? All those while it was made public in a certain candidate's manifesto/promises it was praised as a good deed. It will come to past and as usual nothing good will come from it. Just buckle up and pray for the best. As usual we know who are going to benefit from this undecided

You talk as if you're a foreigner, not a Nigerian. Have you ever seen where price of anything drops in this country? People that will go into it aren't they going into it for profit? Who will agree to lower price when they know you have no choice. Even transportation cost during fuel scarcity, now that fuel is somehow available, has the price dropped? No!

oz4real83:
how many times will fuel subsidy go? All the price increases Buhari's govt did were attested to being the result of subsidy removal, where is the new "subsidy" coming from when they have been removed before by this administration?

Very good question.

All fuel subsidy increases have gone to satisfy price increases. I'll explain.

Say I go market go buy oil for fuel subsidy paying Nigeria. Fuel seller say $100. I pay knowing part of my payment is subsidised, and my profit is protected.

Soon time I come and fuel seller say $200. Haba, I say, then pay since part of my payment is subsidised and my profit is protected. After all, if Nigeria don't subsidise, chickena, I say, and go sell something else, until Nigeria subsidises, because petrol is like oxygen, and Nigerian humans can't exactly reduce how much they breath or drive, and Nigerian governments can't exactly stand by and watch Nigeria's asphyxiate.

Soon time I will go market and ask fuel seller to write receipt for $100000 for fuel I never even bought. Don't worry, I say, we share 50-50 and you keep your fuel. Nigeria will subsidise. And in order for the weak Nigerian governments to not asphyxiate Nigerians driving, Nigeria increases its subsidy.

But that is the answer to where subsidy goes, and not the answer to your wise question, because .......

oz4real83 post=122622189[b:
Nigerians are suffering[/b] because this administration failed to either build new refineries or rehabilitate the old ones, even if "fuel subsidy " is "removed" again, without building new refineries or rehabilitating the old ones, the same suffering will continue.

....... Your's, in bold, "Nigerians are suffering", is the answer.

The new subsidy, along with all subsidises, come from money that might have otherwise paid to upgrade and equip our schools and our hospitals and our transport system and our abilities to be fruitful and increase in number and rule Nigeria with the sweat off our own brows so that we do not suffer. Instead, some feed off the sweat of our brows what should have been invested in us Nigerians, hence we suffer.

And we shall suffer more to remove it, no doubt. Fuel subsidy removal will cause the price of petrol to significantly rise because fuel sellers will increase price to replace their lost subsidy. Increase in price will attract new comers into the market to compete in a now more fairer playing ground since some are not receiving subsidy that some aren't. Competition will increase supply and decrease price, eventually, after we sweat some.

"Rehabilitating the old ones" though, is like rehabilitating a Peugeot 404. Groovy vintage, but there's better cheaper more efficient refineries out there.
